For comparison - I'm about 5'8.5" tall, between 185 and 190 lbs in this video, and have pretty thick/beefy shoulders. Let me know if you have any sizing questions, or other questions! Thanks for watching!
Great review, Patrick! A waxed trucker jacket has been on my want list for a while. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to Huckberry's site to read reviews on Flint & Tinder's jacket. Then, Thursday decides to produce one....ahhhh...decisions decisions. I will have to watch this video again when the time comes for me to order one. And, I just might have to ask you some more detailed questions as well. Again, great job Patrick! 👏
Right on, brother! Thanks for watching. I certainly know the feeling of stalking Huckberry late at night, finger hovering over "Add to Cart." :) Feel free to reach out to me any time to ask questions. rockymtnstyle@gmail.com.
Thanks for this awesome video. I’ve subbed! I already had the flannel flint and tinder (moss green) and love it. Look forward to seeing you rewax it when needed. 👍
Thanks, Simon! Appreciate that very much. I think it'll be a late summer project for me to get ready for fall. After two seasons it certainly still has a good amount of wax but I might as well top up the tank!
One quick side note: it is said that the FnT lining on the Hudson jacket comes from Abraham Moon which is an old UK made company. Note sure about the trucker but I have read that it was an American made lining. Unfortunately I can't find that source again.
Great comparison. If it helps anyone, I own the F&T in small and medium. I have a 39 inch chest and 30 inch waist. The small is perfect over a t-shirt, but I can't layer it over a fleece without looking like a stuffed sausage. The medium is actually a big step up in size. Over a t-shirt I look like a kid in dad's jacket, but it works great over an insulating layer. Based on your video it sounds like Thursday's medium might fall right between the two, which would have probably been the better option for me, but I've had mine for years (small for 3, medium for 2) and they've held up great.
Thanks for this video and for adding your layering category. This is an important thing to know for me as I would layer. If Thursday dropped the price by even $20-$30, it would do a killing, I think. If for only $18 more you can get a famous thus cool version of this jacket, then the choice is obvious.
The two jackets seem very comparable with an almost insignificant price difference. I got the Thursday jacket because I prefer the cotton lining to the polyester or wool lining in North Florida. I started wearing waxed cotton motorcycle raingear in 1969 but the traditional British products have gotten a bit dear. Rugged stuff that benefits from rewaxing every year or so and looks like new if you turn the garment inside out and toss it in a dryer for 5 minutes.
Thank you for the review! I’d love a follow up video with alternatives for some of the drawbacks. What is your favorite coat for windy weather? Or for warmth? Within the heritage space. Thank you!
Great suggestion, TCC! My top suggestion for windy weather right now would be the Proof Passport Field Jacket. I just tested that out for a video and got to put it through it's paces in the stiff wind of the eastern Colorado plains and it was impressive. Also, the Relwen Windzip jacker is a solid choice for a multitude of conditions. Might plan a vid on it... again, thanks for the suggestion! :)
forgive me as i'm this freak in 2023 that never wears a t-shirt (as opposed to an undershirt) in public so your excellent overview helped point me toward the Thursday. great stuff. thanks.
I ordered mine in November and had the same annoyances (if we can call that) as you. I very much like the jacket, one of my complaints would be just an issue with it being a trucker as I wish the sleeves were shorter, but some quality of life touches would have been nice. I wish the front pockets were lined and I wish that it was easier to layer. When wearing this jacket, I would normally be wearing a hoodie and most of my hoodies, except for 1 (makes me want to get a zip up version of that same hoodie because of it), will bunch up unless I hold on to the cuff of the sleeves as I slide my arms through. This is a minor inconvenience but still something that I dont want to conciously be thinking about when just trying to walk out the door. Also, due to that, often times I need to readjust my sleeves underneath the jacket otherwise it would inhibit motion and comfort at my elbows. This was most noticeably an issue with my American Giant Classic Hoodie. Regarding the lined pockets, they really are only good for blocking the wind and maybe putting small items for temporary storage. Often, I would instinctively put my hands into those pockets looking for a soft place for my hands to comfortable, while my face is being tortured by New York winter winds, but was left disappointed. Do you think these are things that a tailor could potentially resolve? Atleast in regards to the sleeve length and pockets? I don't know how that would affect the quality of the canvas and wax though. Additionally, another complaint, which is a lot more opinionative, is that I wish that the inner flannel lining was more color neutral. I mostly wear blacks and greys, which is why I chose the coal option, but if the lining is exposed via the torso or if I want to roll up my sleeves then I have yellow stripes being visible that throws off the outfit. That last complaint probably isnt that big deal but I feel like maybe matching the liner to the color of the jacket would have made a HUGE difference in terms of perceived attention to detail and I would enjoy this jacket SO much more. There have been so many times in which I am wearing the jacket inside and taking it off wasnt a viable option but didnt want to roll up the sleeves or cuffs due to the yellow stripes.
Hey man! Appreciate you sharing your experience. To answer your first question, I've always heard that a good tailor can do anything for the right price. If you were just looking for something soft to be sewn in that might be doable, but making them any larger to accommodate more stuff would probably be way more trouble than its worth. I agree with you on the lining color. I think perhaps they might have wanted a distinctive feature so if someone saw it they'd know it's a F&T. But who knows?! Cheers, mate!
I have to compliment you on the thoroughness of your review and the detail you provided in every category. You confirmed my suspicions that the F&T is a better jacket. Sizing question, I’m 62 years old, about 6’3” 205 pounds, 44 chest with average torso and longer arms. I plan on wearing with a t shirt but would like the option to layer over a sweater or long sleeve shirt. Most jackets in a large are tight in the shoulders and narrow in the waist for me so I’m thinking probably Xl. Only concern is that the XL will be boxy. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again.
Hey Slip! Appreciate the compliment and thanks for taking the time to watch. My chest is about 44" also. Given you're much taller than me and only 18lbs heavier, I actually think a large might work for chest/shoulders. The only potential issue will be the sleeves being a bit short I'd think, because for me, the large (wool-lined) I have only has about 1.5" extra length on the sleeves. So that leads me to an XL. It will certainly be loose, but I don't think it will be too boxy. The shoulders on all are narrow and there is a straight silhouette so you should be good. And if you want to layer over a swear or L/S shirt, I'd 100% try out the XL. Hope that helps and hope it works if you pick one up!
@@rockymtnstyle Appreciate the response and feedback. I’m going to try the large based on your suggestion and figure I can always exchange if I need to size up. I know Huckberry’s return process is top notch.
Excellent review and I really appreciate your attention to detail. I'm sure both jackets will be awesome. I've never had either in hand, but I'm just noticing that the majority of pictures that I see of the Thursday, is that the fabric appears shiny or wet. Perhaps that is their intent? Maybe will patina and dull as the jacket is worn.
This is really what I really want months ago. Thank you for making this video. I like the Thursday design better but they got the inside pocket on the right side and small, which make me decide not to buying it.
Great review! If you ever get a chance, check out and compare/contrast the Filson Short Lined Cruiser and the Freenote Cloth Riders jackets. That would be a good one!
Excellent detailed comparison! Which one do you find more comfortable after breaking them both in? Im leaning towards the Thursday since it has lined pockets.
Thank you, Harsha! Overall I think the F&T is better for me and how I normally wear these jackets, which is over a t-shirt on a not-too-cold day. However, if I'm wearing a long-sleeved shirt underneath, I prefer the Thursday since it has the smoother interior sleeve lining which makes it much more comfortable in that one situation. Both are great, though! Hope that helps!
Kudos to the vid overall as this is my first time seeing this channel. My only question is why didn’t you try on the jackets so we can see how they look?
Hey, Bran! Welcome and thank you! And you know what... that's a good question. Not sure to be honest! At that point I was pretty new to the channel game and pretty busy with life so I probably didn't plan the video out as well as I should have. Believe I do have a few other videos of me wearing the items, but that's for bringing it to my attention! I"m about to start some new jacket content for this fall/winter and I'll make sure to have a ton of try on footage.
You nailed one key thing for me. Where it's made. I've been wanting an Iron and Resin Scout jacket for about 8 or 9 months now. I haven't bought it because it's "imported" and I can't find where. My problem with that is they used to make it in the US for a lower price point, yes I understand inflation, but there's competition USA made at similar price points. So I'm buying nothing. I don't like the Flint and Tinder, Rogue Territory and the 3sixteen is sold out. Maybe next year. I have a symmetry issue. If you have one bold front pocket it must have a second that matches. I also prefer the Type 3 fit is why Iron and Resin or 3Sixteen.
Thanks for the comment, Dark! Appreciate you taking the time to share. I can understand the symmetry thing. And I agree, I do love a type 3 design. Just picked up a type 3 from Brave Star. Hope you find something you love soon!
Great review once again. Thursday Quality goods will be my choice for a few reasons and i will explain. England makes very high quality wax canvas products and most of those quality brands prefer a dryer feeling wax.(idea for a little research & video topic) Portugal have great craftmanship in all kinds of products not only clothes. I personally don't mind where it is made because i lived in Europe for half my life. I am jealous of the cool factor. ( The last of us )
Thanks, man! That's interesting info about the dryer wax. I hadn't realized that. It makes sense, especially if developing a "sick patina" isn't the main goal of the jacket. I can see the English brands going that direction. Agreed about Portugal and many other countries, great craftsman can certainly be found. I really appreciate your comment. Will certainly keep some of this in mind for the future.
I own a couple of leather jackets and boots from Thursday's and recently bought 2 flint and tinder wax trucker jackets.. and to be honest, you just can't go wrong with this 2 brands. the thursday field wax jacket is incredible.
My chest is 45" but I'm only 5'8". So I have to get an XL and the arms are usually long for me. The flint and tinder seems baggier towards the bottom of the jacket where the Thursday looks more slim fit. I need that slim fit otherwise I look like I'm a kid wearing my dad's jacket. But I WANT the F&T😢
I feel your pain, man! I have that same issue a lot. To be honest, if you know a decent tailor they can shorter the sleeves for you. My chest is 43.5" and I'm wearing the medium here. I bet you could get away with a large if you want it to be somewhat slim, and then the sleeves may not even be THAT long. You can always return it! :)
i'm on the edge of XL and L for the Thursday... If it doesn't fit snugly I'd go for the L. I would likely be wearing a flannel shirt under my jacket similar weight to yours in the video. I'm 5'8" and 190lb if that helps. Which size would you go for after wearing the L?
Hey, Andrew! The flannel-lining on both feels similar, and that is to say they feel like a worn-in t-shirt. Pretty comfy to be honest. If you mean -10 to -15 C, yes, I think either jacket could handle that as long as your base layer wasn't a t-shirt...but it's pushing it. If you mean -10 to -15 F, nope, I wouldn't wear either that low. Cheers, mate!
I have the thursday and i wore a t shirt and champion crew neck sweater and spent an hour outside in -14C fairly windy Canadian evening and it was not very warm
One of my favorite coats has enough room between the buttons that I can slip my hand between them to get to my phone in the internal pocket without having to unbutton. Can you reach the internal pocket on either of these jackets while it's buttoned up?
This is definitely the most unique question I've had! So - I just walked upstairs and tried. The Thursday, yes, I can reach in and get my phone. Since the Thursday only has 5 buttons my hand just fits. The F&T, with its 6 buttons more closely spaced, I cannot quite get my hand in. But if you had a small hand you could probably manage. Hope that helps! :)
Im 5’7 155lbs, which a 40.5 chest and broader shoulders. By thr measuring chart i should get thr M on F&T but my arms are short which makes me think j should get a Small?? Which would you recommend
Great question, Ronald. The sizing chart is pretty off, in my opinion. For example, I'm a 43.5-44" chest, 5'8.5", 188 lbs or so... and I wear a medium. It's a little snug, but perfectly wearable. I'd try small if you want it to be fitted at all. If you want it to be big so you can wear a sweater underneath, go M.
@@rockymtnstyle thanks man! Honestly not thinking of layering. I dont have much experience w jackets sincr i live in a warm climate, but im a M in t shirts. But yeah if youre 188lbs and it fits you its gonna br a but baggy on me probably
@@rockymtnstyle I do like how the F and T is fully blanket lined. I have and Iron and Resin Scout that has satin lined sleeves, that I am OK with, but prefer the full blanket lining. I was considering grabbing a Thursday to compare all 3 jackets. Thanks for the reply.
@@rockymtnstyle By the way, I really dig your content. I've checked out a bunch of your videos. You're the only one with anything on the Thursday jacket. Keep up the great content.
@@jeffgrantMEDIA I really appreciate that! Trying to get better and better. And quite surprising on the Thursday jacket. I knew I'd be first but given the popularity of waxed jackets I'd have thought a few more may have popped up.
I can't really figure out the sizing of the Flint & Tinder one. On their website it says 'chest 39 is an M' . But then again, you use an M size, and you have a much larger chest. I'm 98cm, which is about 38,5" , and i'm also pretty slim at 65kg (143pounds) and 178cm tall. It doesn't really make sense for me to have the same size as you. I don't understand why they don't measure it properly, like most manufacturers, by the shoulders. I think i should get an S, but it's a gamble, considering it'll be an overseas shipping.
Yeah I think that they aren't providing the actual measurement, just saying if you have a chest of X inches you should buy Y size. The medium itself is more like a 43.5" from pit to put. It works for me bc I wanted a slightly snug fit, but I'd 100% go small if you are 98cm chest. Good luck!
Considering they are almost the same price - as much as I like Thursday - I would still go with the Flint and Tinder jacket because it is made in the USA, whereas the Thursday jacket is not. So at that price, I am always going to go with the USA made item when the two things being compared are so similar otherwise.
Thursday interior lining is actually 100% cotton , considering waxed jackets aren’t that breathable, i would prefer a cotton lining instead a polyester one
Thursday wins laying for smaller guys, but my chest is 47" and their jacket only goes up to 49"...only thing I can layer that with is a tshirt 😄 flint and tinder wins in sizing I guess you can say.
Ahh that makes me so glad to hear. Really appreciate it and welcome aboard!! Lots of cool stuff planned for 2024. I'll keep doing boots and jackets, of course, because I love 'em. Also going to start doing more content on wrist watches (both expensive and value-focused) and some sneakers/dress shoes as the weather warms up.
Hah! Hard to argue that! What a great brand. Unfortunately, none of them fit me! Can't be 5'8" and stocky apparently. At least with the Ashby and Bedale, which I did buy and try and had to return. Any recommendations?
@@rockymtnstyle I’m 5’8 170 with broad shoulders and a 40” chest. The Harrington waxed quilt lined jacket fits me well in a size Large. If you want a slimmer fit go with a Medium
I'm about 15 lbs heavier and a 42.5" chest or so. Losing weight slowly. If I can get down into the 170s consistently I think I'll try again. Really like their look. Thanks for the suggestion!
Well that's embarrassing... Can't believe no one else brought that up! Sorry about that. 5'8.5 185-190 lbs. Not sure on shoulder measurements exactly, but they are thick. Lol. Thx for taking the time to let me know. I'll put the info in a pinned comment later today.
Dude, put the damn jacket details in the description so someone doesn't have to spend several minutes jumping around trying to find out about the size or color. It's mind numbingly frustrating when you're just trying to research or find basic info and multiple RU-vidrs do this, so something that should take 2 minutes takes 20. Then it adds up and you're on the computer for an hour when it shouldn't have been necessary.
