The message of the final scene is that he had become fully Meta-conscious and whether he could survive or not at the surface is irrelevant. He became what he always should of been which is a self aware, free agent in the world.
At the end, when THX makes it to the surface, you can see that George Lucas was really inspired by this visual and reused it for that famous twin-sun scene in Episode 4. Also, a fun fact is that the silhouetted THX in this scene is not Robert Duvall but rather Matthew Robbins (director of Corvette Summer, Dragonslayer, The Legend of Billie Jean and *batteries not included).
In the book he looks down on the landscape below him and sees a family eating at a picnic type setting and he walks down to them abd they invite him to eat good with them. That would have been a great ending but I like this one
Will Grello for some reason I can imagine a redhead woman inviting him to eat sandwiches with him and she asks him his name and he replies by saying thx and than credits that would have been a better ending in my opinion
At the end of the paperback novel I have (by Ben Bova) book he narrowly escapes being eaten by mutant "shelldwellers", climbs rungs attatched to a concrete wall, and forces all his weight against a sewer grate at the top. That's where THX 1138's story ends.
This film is so important if you are someone that tries to be self aware. For me this movie is very depressing then when THX 1138 makes it to surface I always feel so happy and relieved for him.
CharlesFBronson during the credits, you see a bird fly, which tells us it’s possible for him to live above ground. It will take some time for him to adjust, but he could survive. If he’s determined to escape the underground city, I’m sure he’s determined to survive above ground.
In vain you rejoice for the hero, but the film depresses you for a reason, but because he runs only from his own fears, in the city there is REALLY IS AFRAID of some fear, the robots are harmless, the doors are all open, there are no weapons, the cars are ownerless, as a measure of restrictions they are only warnings, and who can stop him from returning and making a coup inside the shell?
I can easily unsee it. the body-motions are cleverly choreographed to suggest weight. It reminds me of that Monty Python street-climbing skit where the contest is to 'hike' 'up' the sidewalks. It's hilarious how something so obviously everyday horizontal gets you thinking somewhere in the back of your mind "hang on!" You can almost picture them 'falling' if they make a bad move.
I've often wondered what the conditions were that created the world of _THX-1138_ . War? Pandemic? A gradual societal shift? The "society" seems to combine both ends of authoritarian socialism and capitalism (consumption and entertainment are mandatory, but all rights to the self are suborned to the state), so the presentation seems to belie the old "Well... *they* finally took us over!" trope. Anyway it's a fascinating movie and in another universe would probably have launched Lucas' career as an auteur.
You either have a king or dictator with full unquestioned authority or secret partisans as the form of governance. Secret partisans are going to play on both sides of the field while constantly reminding that they are not controlling it all.
The movie doesn't explain what happened. That's one of the reasons why I love it. All we know is that it did. We can all guess and formulate opinions but we will never know unless Lucas explains it.
It's complete predictive programming. Society completely regulated, people turned into asexual serfs who are bred to work through artificial gestation. That's coming. And they'll use the excuses they've prepared people to believe, that "Man" is destroying the planet.
this is not a false hope, this is true for the attentive, the earth is suitable for life and live on it but people underground do not know this, they live in fear afraid of breaking free, slaves of illusions
@@philipjoseph5099 The director ( George Lucas ) keep it, meaning he agree with the notion that earth still habitable, heck, the book even say the same thing ( it was adapted from novel )
It predicts accurately current situation where things have been deliberately set so that individual can not know who is calling the shots. The ruling body hovers constantly over everything and the rulees can not quite figure it out. It is called NWO - where the authority is ever present and omnipotent but invisible and unfathomable to common citizen.
I think it is a future where the advancement of technology has led humanity into somekind of existential paradox. Where the Robots/Androids are security to the humans, who work and act as the cogs in the wheel, working the machines and at the computers, to run the overall infrastructure of their world. The paradox is the humans have become so conditioned to the cyclical process, that they have lost the awareness to actually "Live" and enjoy themselves. Even when they go "shopping", they've become conditioned to just go out, walk into a type of "Amazon Go" - Automated, Cashierless Store, pick up some random item that actually serves no real use to them; go home and just immediately put it away. Practically everything is done for them by technology. They're not even allowed to elope, even sexual pleasure is provided form them "automated", by sexual stimulation devices. Reality Tv is provided. "Religion" itself has also been combined and merged with this whole cyclical process they live it. Constantly drummed into them through robotic conditioning. A true existential paradox, where the humans "maintain" the very technology that controls them. Pharmaceutical drugs also keep the humans "dumbed down" and mind controlled. Individuality has also been suppressed, where men and women all look and dress the same. THX-1138 breaks from of all of this in the end, it's just a shame he was not able to rescue and bring LUH with him too. This Film is criminally underrated and ignored by "mainstream audiences" today because it's too deep for them to understand. If we carry on down the path we're headed now, today what with over excess of consumerism, capitalism and materialism, political correctness, the building up of a Cashless Society, the idolization and obsessiveness of Reality TV and "Celebrity Culture"; which is breeding Narcissism and Self Entitlement in Western Society. IF we don't change our ways and strive to be more Spiritual in ourselves we could well end up with a not too distant Future such as this.

Many call the ending of this Film An "Anticlimax"... well... Back then , nto the 80's, 90's,etc, etc... So, What do you think Now? Are you worth the effort for me to explain it?
What is it about? I dont like that kind of movies that you dont see an ending. Was it good or bad that he escaped? The whole plot is to see whats outside and you only see rising or setting sun.
I'd love to watch this movie with a beautiful woman.Light some candles, grab a bag of popcorn and snuggle up and cuddle under the soft glow of ambiance ❤
Movie is really boring (slow paced, white depressing environment, etc) but if you take the best scenes and make this 3 min clips it looks like a great film
