However, in most patients with such swelling, it’s not cancer and does not need surgical treatment.
There are no known specific causes of thyroid cancer.

The common age range for thyroid cancer is 30 to 50 years.
In some rare cases, it appears as an anaplastic cancer.
Anaplastic cancer is more aggressive and can occur at the age of 60 to 65 years.

Generally, thyroid cancer is highly treatable and curable.
Irrespective of the stage, the chances of curability are around 99%.

The first step is an ultrasound.
It is followed by CT scans for better diagnosis.
In cases with a higher possibility of cancer, FNAC and biopsy are done.
02:42 Treatment of Thyroid Cancer
In papillary or follicular thyroid cancer, the first treatment is thyroidectomy.
Here, the entire thyroid gland is removed.
In some cases, surrounding lymph nodes also have to be removed via a process called lymph node dissection.
After that, the patient is given thyroid and calcium supplements for two to four weeks.
Then, a diagnostic radioactive thyroid scan is done to identify the possible spread of the disease.
If the spread is found, the patient is given therapeutic radioiodine treatment to eradicate it.
After this, the patient is again given thyroxine and tablet supplements.
In some very severe cases, thyroid cancer spreads to the lungs, bones, and brain.
In such cases, the treatment remains the same.
In very few cases where radioiodine therapy does not work, some tablets can be helpful.
However, only 1 to 2% of patients reach the final stage of thyroid cancer.
05:58 What are some aggressive thyroid cancers?
In most thyroid cancer cases, it is completely curable.
In 95-99% of cases, thyroid cancer does not recur.
Certain thyroid cancers like medullary thyroid cancer have a slightly different treatment modality.
One very aggressive form is anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, found in elderly people.
It spreads quickly, even before being diagnosed.
The cure rate in such cases is extremely low, almost less than 1%.
The survival period, regardless of treatment, is 6 to 9 months.
