In 2015 the British Museum loaned 2,800 objects to partners across the UK. This film takes a look at some of the objects loaned to Wellcome Collection for their exhibition 'Tibet’s Secret Temple: Body, Mind and Meditation in Tantric Buddhism'.
Curator of the show, Ian Baker, explores their significance and ritual context.
This film was made by Imma Ramos, Curator of South Asia at the British Museum.

Thank you for shining a light on ancient Tibetan heritage. As a Tibetan I am thankful that your museum is both preserving our at-risk heritage and allowing others access to appreciating it. While we would love to see these back in Tibet where they belong, the reality is that under the long running cultural genocide in Tibet under China, these ancient artifacts would be unsafe.

I was first introduced to this motif of Buddhist Tantric Congress in a bronze displayed in the Chongqing Three Gorges Museum of a Tibetan Guhyasamaja wit the label 密集金刚 (mìjí jīngāng, literarily concentrated thunderbolt). Thanks for explaining this rather curious statuary as the museum had little beyond a simple label.

remember that the basis for the entire corpus of tantrik teachings is compassion. compassion is the goal. these are all methods toward compassion. none of this matters without compassion.

I can see a progression of sophistication of thought from Indian, Aseatic/Amero-Indian, & SE Asian tribalistic imagery & beliefs, later e.g. Hindu/Aztec multi-deitied worldviews and complex artistic expressions etc,, but the most advanced of these progressions seems to be the Himalayan cultures. They seem to have developed the understanding of consciousness to a technically high degree while maintaining an artistic tradition to express this understanding that uses elements of ancient animistic styles. Within the limits of a "Comment" the above may sound simplistic, but as a Naturalist I am not engaged with the spritual side; I just find it a pity that many people don't seem to be able to see beyond the "pictures of strange creatures & gods" viewpoint.

TIBETAN CULTURE IS FASCINATING & SACRED. I HOPE THE PEOPLE FROM THE MUSEUM WILL GIVE ALL SACRED OBJECTS BACK TO THE TIBETANS. I HOPE THEY WILL NOT TRY TO KEEP THE FOR ANY REASON, LIKE THEY USE TO DO

This is my first time to see this on RU-vid. What is explained on this channel, about tantra is just how the look of the statues is, not the actual meaning or purpose of the deities. He should read and follow explanatory-texts and share the original meaning to the audience instead of opinions. E.g. the deity shows us the angry face because the deity practitioners control and decrease their own anger. And female and male (the deities) are sensual because the full combination of wisdom and compassion which is the ground of Buddha Path. No one likes misunderstandings and wrong views as on this RU-vid channel.

There is nothing strange or something out of the ordinary or is an oddity worthy of mention about the "conventional perverted" concept of sensuality of sexual embrace, without which all the readers and everybody else (including the curator himself) would not have being made to exist!

I can imagine how frustrating must be for average Tibetan refugee who visit museum and see that stolen precious ritual items belong to our great Dzogchen Masters , how sad that our spiritual world become attraction for tourist in London...

@HimalayanDumplings 3 года назад
@@khangrikyiduk1634 As a Tibetan I have to agree with you. While not ideal, I would rather the English preserve it for the world to see than risk it be destroyed by China, who has a solid track record of cultural genocide in Tibet.

I know you thoughts come from a good place 💛 As a Tibetan, I feel relieved that the English has these ancient cultural artifacts that are accessible for all to see and appreciate. I know this sounds odd but our reality and alternative scenario means that if these were in Tibet, it could very well be completely destroyed under China's long running cultural genocide efforts in Tibet.

Tantric practices are part of Hinduism; the names of figures you are mentioning like Garuda and Yama are part of Hinduism. Looks like a very half-baked research to me. I was hoping you will get into how tantric practices from Hinduism influenced Tibetan Buddhism and vice-versa. Disappointed this was not covered.

Great items and well described, but it is a pity that Ian Baker cannot pronounce the word 'deity' correctly - it is not pronounced 'dee-it-ee' but 'day-it-ee', this error seems to be most common in the USA and even worse is ocassionally mispronounced 'dee-tee' as in 'D.T'.

The Curator has no idea what he is dealing with. Pompously gibbering words that have no real meaning. He is mixing Ideas and Legends. Just let us see it in detail, instead of seeding your perceptions about something you don't understand.

Unfortunately with Tibet being under occupation and cultural genocide rampant under China, Tibetans in Tibet are rarely the primary beneficiary of our cultures being "appreciated." This may sound odd, but i would rather these important Tibetan artifacts be preserved in England than where it could end up. Thank you for your thoughtfulness though 💛

That's not bad enough. They own slave and brutally abuse them. Cut off their limps and dig off their eyes alive. The holy objects made of human bones are taken from live human. Virgin kids are considered pure, the sacrifice kids and peel off their skin for rituals to gain powers. I'm not joking, there are tons of these videos in RU-vid, including interviews with the local how they were brutally abused by the monks. These holy objects are preserved in Tibet museum. Dalai lama used to be the most powerful and richest in Tibet until CCP interference, that's why they hate CCP, telling their monks to set self on fire as protest to CCP.
