Tibet and the Himalayas: Tibet India trade in Kalimpong before 1959
Kalimpong is a picturesque hill station town in the Indian state of West Bengal. Called the ‘Gateway to Tibet’, it was once an important hub for trade with Tibet due to its proximity to the region. Along with Tibetan and Indian traders, the town in its heydays attracted numerous individuals and groups pursuing business opportunities. For this episode of Tibet and Himalayas, we met up with 3 local traders who recall their family business with the traders from Tibet and Gen Jamphel Kalden la, former Principal of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Cultural Institute of Kalimpong. Interestingly, the name of one of the trader’s shop is still called ‘Kha Depo”, a Tibetan name given to his father by the traders from Tibet.

How refreshing to hear what the Indian traders who have for generations traded with Tibet express their concern for present day Tibetans who are unable to preserve our rich and unique culture passed on to us by our ancestors! Thank you VOT👍🙏

Such a wonderful and heartwarming video .Genla talking so candidly about the Nemo’s of kalimpong brought tears just thinking about my late grandmother who was known as 10 mile Nemohla . 🥹 And also Kamlesh ji talking about how we are losing our indentity was an eye opener.Its high time we should all start from our own home teaching our children the younger generation in whatever way possible our culture,tradition ,language.🙏
