Don't make the same mistakes that nearly cost me my career. Learn the difference between common shin injuries, as well as what to do if you have stress fractures. Data on Stress fractures is based on very limited research that is largely derived from small studies and case studies, almost all of which are retrospective. More research is sorely needed.

A stress fracture is a result of an inflammation of the periostis untreated over a period of time - so having all those symptoms simultaneously is quite logical.

By far the best video out there for detailed information on stress fractures. Something I have battled for 6 years now on and off, but never educated myself thoroughly until now. This video goes beyond the surface level videos on shins splints and stress fractures talking about actual ways to differentiate the two besides the old it feels better in the morning is a stress fracture diagnosis. Enough compelling information that I’m going to take the recovery more seriously and probably seek out x-rays again since I haven’t gotten them since my first incident. Unfortunately I think I may fall into the latter category of some that never healed, we’ll see. Thank you and I just wanted to pass my gratitude for a superb video!

Thank you for a very informative video about Stress Fractures. I was skeptic at first that I was suffering from it, since I took a 2-month rest from running, and immediately felt it again right after running 5 miles. Now I'm a bit worried about the nonunion fracture portion since I eat like crap. I'll definitely take the advice mentioned in this video and have this checked with an ortho if I don't see any improvements. Again, thank you Lorena!

I’m a Marine Vet, during boot camp I got 4 SF on my right tib and 3 on my left. I was pushed back into training after 2 months of rehab…lmao needless to say I’ve had shin pain for the past 5 years. I pushed myself ( I don’t even know how) through running consistently each year for my Physical tests as well as my CFT (combat fitness test) which has you sprint 200 meters and pick up a person your weight and running about 50 meters. Needless to say, I finished my first enlistment with pain in my legs all the time. I’m 23 now and can hardly walk. Please, make sure your body is taken care of…this video does a great job of informing you about how to tell and what to look for, but if you think you have SF’s please see a doc and have it checked out. Take the necessary time to heal your body.

You answered my question whereas I couldn't find a specific video about why I have developed hard bony prominences after hard traumas, separately, to my upper shins on the edge of concrete block steps in the garden (new garden boots and tripped). I'm 65 and I'm annoyed to have all these evidences of my clumsiness. I also have a bump from a gymnastic missed dismount when I was a teenager. I guess I've just recently had 2 stress fractures and walked them off finally. Ugly legs with those and one knee replacement. BTW, you are informative and smart. Sorry for your injuries and sequelae. Thank you for sharing this. Was very helpful to me, a 52 yr old runner, who had tibial stress reactions I thought were healed, then did a boisterous leg press session at my local Osteo Strong. Back to nursing what appears to be a mild? stress reaction case again. Using an electromagnetic bone stimulator I strap on to each leg - runs for 10 hours a day. Seems to be helping. Hope you can get back to Parkour soon!!

Now it's only in my right shin, right on the bone in the middle. I have seen a physio therapist though and he didn't say much, only to give me exercises to do at home. Dorota K i hope the mri clears things up! There is something that I learned about after making this video: stress reactions. When I just got my latest MRI, my fractures were generally filled up but I still had larger “stress reactions” in both tibias. This is an area of less-dense, damaged bone that can be quite long, and never devolved into an actual crack. So that might be an option as to what you’re feeling too

I immediately stopped training but it stills get worse every day. Now i can't even hold a pen with my right arm, it instantly becomes numb. i’ve had bilateral stress fractures before, during my last football season. Then after a long time in PT was clear to practice again, and it still always felt weird. I’ve been practicing all off season and tried track for like a week before i thought it was a bad idea because my legs started hurting too much. And took 2 weeks off my football practice, went back to it for about a month then, went to do 1 on 1’s with a friend and had to run bare foot and am having similar pain now to when i had the fracture. Almost a dull ache right now, (thought it was a good idea to not do much until i can go see my orthopedic in 2 weeks) but i have collapsed arches and when i taped them and hiked up super steep switch backs for a week without taking ibuprofen, i was fine. I tried a quick mile run yesterday and felt like normal, shin pain, but not localized. I don’t think it’s a fracture because i’ve tried pushing as hard as i can in the bones and it doesn’t hurt, occasionally i’ll find a spot that feels bruised but not what they used to be. The pain can jump up to my knee and upper shin, then back down to where the old ones used to be. So i have no clue what the hell is going on.

I would limit exercise to swimming only. If you catch it early it won't persist into a painfully long stress fracture recovery. I am hoping on 8 months of healing from stress fracture.

I thought I had a stress fracture as pain started when a grocery cart slammed into my shins (don't ask). The bruising and pain from that never really healed. I was also doing a lot of ballet, pointe work and dancing on top of other physical activities and a lot of it. Add in every possible risk factor I have...long history of eating disorder, surgical menopause and low estrogen levels, being thin, already have severe osteoporosis. Six months after my accident I was in so much pain I was refered to ortho sports medicine. xray showed stress "reaction" in left tibia but no fracture line. Further MRI confirmed stress reaction and swelling all along medial anterior tibia bone and soft tissue but no fracture line, so definitely shin splints, but advanced shin splints. That was January 2019. Fast forward to now, STILL dealing with the same thing but now stress reaction in right tibia as well. I've done months of ortho boots, PT, even acupuncture, non weight bearing exercise, no more ballet classes or pointe work, you name it but these will not heal. I go through period where it will hurt less and it will seem really well and then I will slowly begin to do more weight bearing activity and then bam the pain suddenly becomes nearly unbearable again and here we go again, more months of rehab and waiting it out. VERY frustrating. I already take loads of supplements (2000 IU D, 1000mg calcium, K2) plus HRT and am also on Prolia due to the severity of my osteoporosis. There have been times when it hurt even to walk at all with a disconcerting "bending" feeling in the bone that would come and go but there has never been a fracture line identified so it's still considered shin splints and stress reaction. I will say that lots of rest and ice does help. I just can't be patient enough lol. I'm 48 years old and not getting any younger and I hate that I can't do the things I am passionate about, aka dance.

🙋🏽‍♂️ I actually almost broke my tibia back in 2008 playing basketball and even after treatment I still get some discomfort to this day. It sucks!

Please can you make another video that says posterior tibial stress fractures take a shorter period of time to mend. Great video aside from the small heart attack I had hearing 7 months when I’ve been told 12 weeks for my posterior tib sf. 😂❤

Welp. Time to go get some tests and see what the damage is. Hope you managed to recover somewhat at least.
