To keep biting insects at bay around the log cabin, to protect Cali, our Golden Retriever from ticks and fleas and to repel mosquitoes and black flies while I'm out on camping trips, I use permethrin on clothing, DEET on my skin and Nexgard for Cali.

CDC in the US says over 35,000 cases of Lyme disease last year and growing quickly. It is the #1 potential threat now with no cure or even a solid long term treatment in sight.

Lime survivor here.. Dang near killed me due to Docs not seeing the signs and thought it was something else. My pure Block headed ways and a lot of channeled anger ( thankful for my Airborne training to never quit ) and 9 years after the year they said I would croke ,, I'm still here!!

Rich I swear that most doctors since they are so "rushed" will miss many of the tick related health problems. People that give their animals the pills are risking a very serious side effect too. Not sure why (money I suppose) but so little research is being done about Lyme/ tick concerns. We need some very active defenses for these "buggers" and there currently are few.

I do not pull the ticks off but smear Vaseline over the tick and leave it for awhile ... they suffocate very quickly ...

@@groseillegrowa3659-One of the the best ideas and it works! I do the same since it blocks them from getting air and after a few minutes they pull their own heads out. People end up with infections in a bite if tick is pulled due to the head or part of the tick being left behind in the bite area. Wondercide also makes a wonderful cedar repellent for pets, another for outside use and also lotions for human skin. We used the pet cedar liquid on the dogs and you can actually watch the tick run to the surface and die right there. Crazy. Very safe stuff and all natural. Will also cause a tick to get off you right away. Blessings.

@@jaimhaas5170 - We did the same until we found out that was a bad idea. Most of the time they die and I was told that they actually will do something like a puking action which will leave behind stuff that can cause infection. Being burned causes an involuntary action in them and they may even pull their own heads off trying to get out in time. Vaseline is a better way. Smear it around the tick and it will keep them from getting air. They pull out on their own.

In 1989 I was one of the first people in Wisconsin to have a confirmed case of Lymes Disease. It was misdiagnosed at first so it had time to set in. I wound up in a cardiac care unit for 10 days on an external pacemaker. I was lucky to have fully recovered. Neurological effects like mine only happen if the disease is left untreated. Being careful about tick deterrent and checking for ticks as well as being suspicious of flu-like symptoms in the summer is very important. My doctor thought I'd never go camping again but my parents knew me better, my "welcome home from the hospital" gift was a new tent. I use deet (Deep Woods Off) and spray permethrin on clothing.

Here in the Southeastern United States, we are inundated with ticks. You can't go into the woods or fields without walking out with at least one. I definitely use deet however I've heard certain flowers (mums) will repel them. We do not have your pesky black flies though. Our skeeters are as large as bald eagles though.

Steve Jarvis Well....I might have exaggerated a little, however I have an electric swatter the size of a tennis racket. They are about the size of a quarter, sometimes a half dollar. (the mosquitoes)

Aw hush now, Maine blackflies, have been know to carry off Texans from Texarkana and Monroe kicking and screaming, when swarmed. If they just had slathered up like Mainers or sprayed their clothes better.

I was just bow hunting for deer not far from your area(two hours south). My 8yo got a tick. My/our first experience. All I can say is act fast when you seen them. They look like they are burrowing slow, but they are under your skin in a very quick time. He ended up in ER having it removed. I'm a medical professional, and thought I knew and understood the threat. The speed from which you see it half under the skin, to the time it's unreachable is so fast, I can't explain. Literally took me 2-3 minutes to find tweezers in my first aid kit....by then it was the rest of the way in. Going forward in the future, this will be a real problem for outdoors people if they keep growing in population at the rate they are. Great video.

Here in Oregon, we've been dealing with an increased risk of lung or heart worm infections in our pets. This is carried by mosquitos. If you haven't started already, start giving Calli a once a month chew to repel them. I can tell from your videos that you love her so much. She is a gorgeous retriever with such a sweet personality :-) My assistance dog is a Dachshund mix that has wiggled her way into my heart.

A good and timely Message Shawn ! We used the Vet recommended Lyme prevention treatments for our Golden for years, as we spend most of the Ontario summers at a cottage not too far away from your neck of the woods.We believed at the time Lyme Disease was a Spring/Summer/Early Fall concern in this part of the World. Bottomline our Golden got Lyme Disease a few years ago despite the medicines. We believe it was from ticks picked up during a hike one December/January during a particularly warm thaw that we usually get in Southern Ontario that time of year. We even saw and removed the ticks carefully right after that hike. If you are outdoors with your pet any time of year in above freezing temps,I would suggest that Lyme Disease become a year round concern, given the changing weather patterns we seem to be getting. Our Golden was once just like Cali, and while she is still with us 3 years later at 9 years old, she is not the Captain of our Forest, Squirrel Terrorist, or Champion Orange Training Dummy Fetcher anymore, despite the $$$$ of drugs she needs every month. Lyme is a year round concern and a horrible thing to deal with, so a good reminder to be aware and protect your best Friend !

Thanks, Shawn! I also use Nexgard for my Alaskan Malamute, Ghost. Deet works great but it also will take paint off of tablecloths and such, just FYI. I get the 40 Deet stuff usually so it's pretty strong stuff. Take care and thanks for the video!

Survival Russia put up a video of how to make tick/insect repellent from ants & a rag. Apparently the Formic acid the ants use as a defence is a natural repellent to most biting insects

Interesting info. I learned something. Here in northwest Ontario, we are fortunate. The dry prairie influences on our climate keeps the bug situation tolerable. I’ve developed my own practice to guard against the mosquitoes when they descend at dusk (10pm) but I will consider your suggestion. Thanks for sharing this.

I can remember going out onto the fields at night and lying on my back to look at the stars. That was 30-40 years ago in Maryland. Sadly, can't even think of doing that now. I spent lots of time outdoors in Maine growing up. Flashlight tag in the woods, hiking, bonfires, lying in the grass with friends looking at the stars talking about UFOs. Rarely saw a tick 20-30 years ago. Now you have to check yourself from just walking through a patch of taller grass. It's a loss.

I cant tell now that I'm watching how old this video is but please pay attention! I'm a landscaper in Maine. I pull AT LEAST 100 ticks OUT every year and they're headed your way !! For sure !! We have 3 labs. We started using Soresto collars on all 3. And they work with dogs that are always in the water up to 8 months. We have a pond and they're in everyday for several hours each afternoon. Ticks WILL get to you sooner or later. DONT WAIT until its questionable ! Get this collar for Cali ! Be ahead of the curve ! Please please PLEASE get this collar for Cali !!!

We find that " Seresto " Collars work best. I am almost 56 years old and have tried most everything on the market. We have always had 3-4 dogs and at least 7 cats at one time and nothing really seemed to work 100%. Fleas and ticks are bad here in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia - USA. Seresto collars came highly recommended and also come in a very handy tin for Bush craft tinder or wax. We only use the Seresto on the dogs since they are inside/outside dogs. The bulk of the cats are inside and only a few outside. Advantage used on cats. Not one Flea or tick on the dogs since we started using the collars. Best item I have ever used for dogs. They are a bit on the pricey side but so well worth it since they last for 8 months!

Ticks are the worst blood sucking pests there is in my book! I use the permethrin after watching your video last year and gave it a try, it works great! Treat my clothes with it every spring and retouch them up as needed through the summer. Awesome stuff!!

Great information. Here in Florida, we have TONS of ticks. If I go outside to work in the yard, I check for ticks before coming in as I usually find more than one. We have deer up from the river that 'graze' in our yard which is where so many ticks come from. I find that the just hatched ticks climb out onto leaves and twigs and hang there waiting for a meal to pass by so we get bit a lot from waist up and the dogs and cats are covered unless we treat them for ticks (and fleas). I didn't know about the colors that insects are attracted to and learned from you - again. Thanks for your great videos!

I’m glad to see this on your channel! It’s amazing we’ve been protecting our pets from ticks & Lyme disease for decades yet the powers that be said Lyme disease in humans doesn’t exist! I have chronic Lyme from an undiagnosed tick bite over 25 years ago ( I had the bullseye rash ). I’m glad people are more aware & protecting themselves.

Leisa, hello from Maine. I’m almost 54 and was diagnosed with long term Lyme 3 years ago. It’s been a real battle with Docs and years of taking three or more antibiotics haven’t helped. They are fun to watch. I read somewhere that several bats in a medium sized Bat house can eat thousands of mosquitoes a day .. problem is theres 1000 Billion Mosquitoes....LOL!

Great point about wearing light colored clothing. It also allows you to more easily spot darker ticks and pick them off early before they get near your skin. If traveling the bush with a friend, don't be shy about stripping down to your skivvies once a day and checking each others backsides for ticks. I have never felt a tick crawling on me, guess they're too light. You have to go looking for them. I gardened for 15 years beside an overgrown field, never once coming across a tick. Two years ago, something changed. Came across ticks almost daily, either in the garden or directly on me. At the end of the day I'd remove my shoes, go straight to the bathroom and into the bathtub, where I'd undress. Then I'd inspect myself in front of a mirror. I love being close to nature, and the soil, and I wasn't too concerned about Lyme disease, but I hate the thought of a potentially dangerous parasite up under my clothing. Creepy! And I hate mosquitoes! Would rather be stung by bees or mauled by grizzlies! :)

Shawn, the only tick repellant I've found effective for my dog has been the Seresto collar. I don't know how it works, but it does, even in a heavily infested area. The guys from the tree service who bring me my wood chips for the orchard recommended a product called Tick Stuff (yes, really). It's a spray for clothing (not on skin) that is allowed to dry and lasts thru several washes. I sprayed a hoodie and have the hood up when I'm bush-hogging along my tree line and so far, so good. Lyme disease is NO fun! I also make a DIY essential oil blend that can be mixed with oil for rub-on application or with alcohol for a spray. Please let me know if you and your family would like the recipe.

Thanks Shawn, I use frontline for ticks and fleas,seems to work well on your dogs, my father in law used to use easy start to remove them off his dogs that I remember (ethonale) they do come up as a lump. I used to dig them out with a very sharp knife,,but the spinners are the best way now.. :)

We are all going to be dealing with more and more bugs as their territories change, so knowing how to deal with them is essential. I have a hat with a no-see-em netting on it, so my face doesn't get bitten, and I wear light clothing, but I don't use the chemicals because I'm chemically sensitive so react to so many things it's ridiculous. But for normal people, this is an invaluable video :D Thank you!

Shawn: It is easy to check the dog for ticks. Just run your fingers through her coat with your fingers on her skin. The ticks are definitely big enough to feel. Get a tick remover from your veterinarian and it is easy to remove them (read the instructions, of course). A tick remover is a small plastic device but very useful. We have lots of ticks here in NB and our dogs are protected by medication but you still need to check and remove any you find. Cheers.

I was so amazed when you were talking about deer flies! I’m originally from Michigan and I can remember canoeing down the Au Sable or Rifle river when I was young. My dad used to put his glasses on backwards-so they were “looking” backwards. He said that deer flies used to drive him insane (with that horrible buzz that went right through your soul) because they would hang out near the back of your head. So he would wear his glasses backwards, which tricked the deer flies into hanging out in front of his face, and then he could see them and squash them. I thought he was a little nuts, but it really seemed like it worked! And now to hear you say pretty much the same thing-amazing!! Wish my dad was still around so he could hear this validation of his idea, but I guess he doesn’t have to worry about deer flies in heaven. -KGB. No deer flies in southern New Mexico! PS I lived in Algonquin Prov Park one summer!

I'm in the states and I use Natural Defense for my dog. We purchase it on pet stores like PetValu. Natural ingredients with no chemicals. I'm in NJ and we have lots of ticks. Haven't ever seen any on my boxer yet.

I watch a guy called Lars on survival russia channel, the russians have tick traps sewn into a lot of their clothing. its a second layer with a dead end inside cuffs. ticks always crawl upwards and they get trapped.

Alan my wife had to take our 4 yr old to have one removed from his head....so burrowed in. They had an amazingly simple tool (she told me about it) and I wonder why they don't have it mass produced yet. It is far superior to tweezers and easy to use.

@@jaimhaas5170 I live in the Czech republic, where ticks are endemic. The 'tweezers' I referred to are half the size of a ballpoint pen. They have parallel-closing, tapered jaws operated by a spring-loaded plunger. You can get them from any pharmacy here, and they work a treat. I always carry one in my pocket whenever I go mushrooming.

very good video. Lyme disease nothing to fool around with. know two families devastated with long term health problems with it. I ve had good luck with sawyer Permethrin (0.5%) product.

boot bands.... We used to used them in the military. Like a cloth rubber band with metal hooks at each end. You put them about half way up your boot, then wrap your pant leg under them and it keeps the pant leg pretty well sealed up around the top of your boot. Just thought I'd share that if you've never tried such a thing.

I was able to have permethrin (no mixing required type) shipped to us from Cabelas in the states a few years ago. You were the one who recommended it to us actually in some internet forum Sean (facebook maybe?) I've heard that is no longer possible. The stuff works well though as I have not found a tick on me in the 4 years or so that I've been using it on my camping and hunting clothing. As far as the other biters we just don't do canoe trips from late May to about mid-July!

Really surprised you have not had problems in the past with ticks, I would have thought that during warmer periods that the forest land around you was prime tick country with the range of deer and other animals which live there. I walked through a local managed wooded area near where I live popular for walks and picnics and afterwards found several ticks had attached to my legs and arms. I purchased a pair of special tick remover tweezers after this so I can remove the blighters in future!

Finally someone has a great bug proofing plan. I love the idea of the sticky tape!! We use those fly strips in our garage and near our exit doors to keep bugs out of the house. Thanks for all the links on the products. How about your rain coat? I tried to find it online but everything I find is too short or too dressy. Thanks!

I just planted herbs and other plants for but repellents all around my house. Also I use topical frontline on my animals. I live in Pennsylvania so we have ticks here. I have to spray my yard too, cause the deer jump my fence. I have found ticks on my animals in the past but not since I started spraying. 👍

If mosquitoes are a big issue in your area you may also need to look into Heartgard or something similar to help protect Cali. Heartworm is always a concern for dogs in areas with a large mosquito population.

Hi Shawn - Just a suggestion. I bought a permethrin spray that goes on the outside of clothing and is designed for just that purpose, and not to be put on skin. The good thing about that, as compared to clothing soaked in permethrin, is the permethrin doesn't come in contact with the skin. So far, it seems to be working great, but we're early here in bug season. Have a safe trip and have tons of fun! Diane in Minot, ND.

Hello Shawn-- Mark's workwear now has mosquito treated clothing for city folks so maybe it's worth testing in the"Central District" as well. The "forest Background" sure" filled in quickly and is "fabulous . That is a good prediction for the "Fall Hunt " --all for now
