I'm glad he touched on tick prevention and removal. Everyone really needs to take this seriously especially this time of year. Trust me as somebody who has had their life destroyed from a tick bite for the last 18 years, you don't want to get sick from one. It took me over 10 years to get my Lyme disease diagnosis and every minute of its been a living hell. You can look forward to oral antibiotics, IV antibiotics, IV lines directly into your heart, pain medication, having massive insomnia, feeling like you have the flu on steroids 24/7, never feeling healthy again, people and Dr not believing you or taking you seriously, frequent trips to the emergency room, not being able to walk or talk or read, developing seizure, possibly becoming paralyzed, not being able to go to work or school or resume anything you used to do. I wouldn't wish this on satan himself.

Sarah Mabry I am sorry for the symptoms you have had to endure. I am however, not sure why you are getting the treatment you are getting as every meta review and meta analysis I have ever seen has concluded that prolonged antibiotic therapy offers no sustained benefit to patients who have post-Lyme disease syndrome or 'chronic lyme disease' . These studies also showed a substantial placebo effect and a significant risk of treatment-related adverse events. As such the treatment you are receiving runs counter to the recommendations of the AMA and CDC.

Manitoba, Canada, circa 1972: I was at summer camp. I think I was 8 or 9 years old. One day, sitting in the camp lunch area, I ran my hand through my hair and felt a bump, which I immediately knew was a tick (you'd get one or more ticks on you almost every day there so it wasn't a big thing). There were no counsellors around so I walked back into the kitchen. The cook - a slightly scruffy fellow with a dirty apron and uneven facial hair - came up to me and I told him about the tick. He looked at my head, took the cigarette out of his mouth, burned the tick off with it, brushed the ashes out my hair and sent me on my way.

I had a tick bite me on the back of the head when I was a kid. My mom put vegetable oil on it and little sucker (pun intended) came right out. I am not sure if it was that it irritated it or cut off its air supply but I have heard that this trick works with less frequency the longer the tick has be feeding. Whatever the reason, getting the tick to let go of you voluntarily is far preferable to pulling it out with tweezers and missing some. It only takes a few seconds and a tablespoon of oil to try and if it doesn't work you can still go to town with the tweezers.

Thank you for kinds of touching on Chronic Lyme (which I have). If you start feeling flu-like symptoms that don't got away, check for Lyme. If you find a tick on you, even if you don't find a rash, get checked. If you get diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue symndrome, get checked. Lyme tests also aren't one hundred percent. It took my mom and I YEARS to even get tested for Lyme. Her only know tick bite is from childhood. The disease can essentially hibernate until your immune system is stressed by injury, pregnancy, etc. I have no known tick bites. It is theorized that I got Lyme while I was in my moms uterus or from breast milk. PLEASE LIKE THIS TO SEND IT TO THE TOP, it is super important.

I've had chronic Lyme disease and 3 co infections for the last 18 years and it is truly a living hell. I get retested by my Lyme doctor frequently and still test positive even after rounds of IV antibiotics( which I currently have a catheter into my heart for). I'm doing better but am still bedridden and can't work. More people need to take Lyme disease more seriously and we need better testing. I hope you're doing better and If you ever need a fellow lymie to talk to, let me know :)

Ms. Lindsey Marie He did not touch chronic Lyme, but more accurately post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome. Untreated Lyme disease on the other hand is more accurately referred to as disseminated late-stage Lyme disease.

You should make a video on anxiety, panic attacks and ways to deal with it. I've recently developed these problems and am having the hardest time getting help or information from doctors. I recently had an echo done on my heart to rule out heart problems (since my anxiety causes heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, etc). When I got my results earlier today the cardiologist flat out told me he doesn't believe in anxiety problems yet couldn't tell me what's causing these symptoms. Another doctor told me to just learn to live with it but offered no advice. It's frustrating that medical professionals discount t very real anxiety symptoms that do have a negative impact on people's lives. So anyway, a video on this topic would be appreciated by many I'm sure.
@MrAlbedo39
@MrAlbedo39 9 лет назад
TeamHarryJamesPotter It seems some doctors who have never experienced an anxiety attack blow them off with an "it's all in your head" attitude. I've had anxiety attacks; they are _horrible_. You're convinced you're going to die at any moment. The worst part is that anxiety attacks feed off themselves; the more you freak out, the worse it gets. The best thing you can do when you get an anxiety attack is to realise that you're just having an anxiety attack and that it will pass. I'm not a doctor so I'm not going to give any medical advice other than to say: if your doctor "doesn't believe in anxiety attacks" or does not take them seriously, find another doctor. I used to get anxiety attacks all the time. Two of them were so bad I went to emergency because I felt like I couldn't breathe, my heart was racing and I thought I was dying. I haven't had one for many years now, however. I tend to not stress out about things these days and I suspect that's helped.

The good doctor didn't mention it but there is a relationship between Lone Star Tick bites and acquiring an allergy to red meat, potentially for years afterword. It is currently being studied. This is a link to a PBS article about it. www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/tick-will-make-lose-appetite-red-meat/

I've been watching some of your older videos, and I wanted so say thank you so much for covering this topic! Both my sister and my mom have had lyme disease. Fortunately, even though neither presented with the classic bullseye rash, both were diagnosed and treated fairly early, so they have no lasting effects of the disease. Educational outreach like this is so important for lyme because, with it's vague flulike symptoms, it is so easily mistaken for other diseases. I would also add that even if you haven't found a tick, if you have symptoms of lyme during tick season you should still go to the doctor and talk about whether you need to be treated or tested for lyme because sometimes the tick drinks its fill and jumps off without you noticing that they were ever there--neither my mom nor my sister found the ticks that caused their illness. Of course, you should do tick checks to try to prevent this from happening.

One time as a teenager I was feeling oddly sick and decided to see if a bath made me feel better (I wanted to shower, but was too fatigued to stand up) and to my shock I found a tick on the underside of my balls. I can't be sure that was the cause of it, but I can say one of my strangest memories is having to ask my mum to get it off for me due to the annoying positioning of it. And man did taking it off hurt.

Dixavd I've had similar, but not as bad experiences, If it's somewhere you cant see or get with tweasers on your own, use the soap trick put soap on a cloth or tolet paper with a dab of hot water and press it to the tick rubbing it in a bit, and it'll just come right off, I did it myself the last two time I got a tick (on the inside of my ass check and in my pubes) saved me a lot of embarressment

I walked through a field yesterday, wasn't out there more than 10 mins and hours later when I got home and took off my shirt I found the first tick I've ever had just sitting on my chest. Thankfully it hadn't burrowed or anything and I could just pick it off and set it on fire. I've lived semi-rural most of my life but only after you start parasite month did I get my first tick ever. I blame this pure coincidence on you Healthcare Triage, thanks :P

oh i know another one! i'm not sure if it's specific to a type of tick, but my friend is now allergic to red meat. something about a protein that's found in all mammals except for primates, so when a tick bites a cow and then you (or something like that) that protein gets in your blood and your immune system tries to get rid of it since it doesn't know what it is, so then you have an immune response when you're exposed to it again. like by eating it. sorry i don't know the details but it was interesting to me when i heard it and i was hoping this video would mention it

Once we are ready to ease of parasites, maybe we could move on to household poisons (pesticides like fly spray, fungicides, herbicides like for lawns etc) and their effect on human health. Clearly there is a need for such things, and benefits to their use, but most people are have a very poor understanding of their effect on health. My parents have been very cautious about any kind of poison, and rightly so, but how should we be cautious? My parent's would tell us to stay away from people spraying weeds on the side of the road, and to stay out of rooms sprayed with fly spray for a about 30 minutes. Are there studies that validate these types of behaviours?

I've heard about saving ticks that have bitten you by taping them to a sheet of paper and writing the date and location, sort of like a specimen log. That way if you develop any symptoms you can take them in to get them tested.

The idea of going to the doctor any time you find a tick on yourself surprises me. I grew up in rural Missouri and played in the woods a lot as a kid. I got ticks on me more times than I can count, and going to the doctor every time would have been impossible.

Ugh, I can't stand ticks, and of course me liking to hunt, hike and camp puts me right in their playground. Anytime I find one I'll usually cut it in half length wise or set it on fire, or to be sure, both. What's really bad are the seed ticks, they are so freaking small that they are very easy to miss.
@kimbyd24
@kimbyd24 9 лет назад
Interesting. Though we frequently just pulled the ticks off of ourselves when we would get them as children, we also sometimes used a match, as it's quick and easy: light a match, immediately blow it out, then touch it to the tick's back. The tick should immediately detach. Best to have something to catch the tick in as it's likely to fall.

Abraxian Absolution That's almost impossible, seeing as most if not all tick species have non-human hosts. Eradicating a parasite or disease from humanity is possible, albeit difficult, especially when it involves the developing world(look at Small Pox or Guinea Worm). But to completely eradicate a disease that has reservoirs in non-humans would be a Herculean task, just imagine having to track down every single wild deer in North America (if not the World) and combing them for ticks. All the while, new ticks are hiding in the grass. Having said that, you could go all sci-fi and genetically engineer a disease that only a particular species of tick could get but that is carried by tick prey species like dogs. In a similar way to how Malaria is carried by Mosquitos but does not effect the Mosquito itself.
