Welcome to competition day! KBT trail stop 2 on the Rappahannock River in western VA, a massive tidal fishery chock full of bass, snakeheads, stripers, catfish, and all manner of sportfish.
During my practice day I managed to break down a chunk of the river and locate a few areas that were holding some fish, now it was time to capitalize on it. Knowing that the day would start with a high tide, and that the fishing wouldn't be really good until some of the water receded, I had to make sure that the first couple hours didn't dictate the day. With a high tide the fish were going to scatter into the flooded bank and be pretty hard to locate, and as the tide fell it would bring the fish to areas that were more accessible. Moving slowly and methodically, I was able to snatch up a 16" fish that was guarding fry in a ditch mouth to start the day and get a fish on the board. Then came the dry spell, for the next few hours it was a grind waiting for the tide to get right in my area. Luckily, the water fell out quickly and around 10-11 I started picking up fish about every 15-20 minutes to slowly add to the teams total. By the end of the day I had amassed 8 keepers, with the largest being 17.5". Unfortunately it was not enough to stave off the Norfolk privateers who took the win this time.
