A mangrove tank built for mudskippers. The tank is on a 6 hour tidal cycle. 6 hour low tide, and 6 hour high tide. About 30 minutes from low to high.

@@MrHellsChaos Yepp. Thats exactly how its running and its pretty simple system really. The lower tide drains slower, something you will see in nature too. water always goes out slower than in during hight tide.
@matlarsweta

@@adamshepherd6810 Yupp, thats right. When the pump is running it pushes up more water than the short pipe can drain. At the high tide mark, there is a third overflow drain. 6 hours later when the pump stops, the water slowly drains through the lowest pipe back down again.

Oh wow, I'm gonna save this idea for a project I was planning with freshwater pom poms crabs and sparkling gourami to see if I can encourage any breeding behavior... can I ask what species you used other than mudskippers? Also, I would love it if you made a quick tour of the set-up, even if it was just a quick peak in your cabinet at your holding tank and pump set-up... this is wonderful! I was wondering how to smoothly transition a 'slow river/rice paddy' set-up... this gives me ideas already.

This is genius and amazing! How often do you change the water? I would suspect you only change the water from the main water reservoir thus everytime the tide comes in, they have fresh clean water rather than old dirty water?
@matlarsweta
@matlarsweta Год назад
As this is quite warm water 28 c, it evaporates quickly, so constant top up is needed ontop of the fortnightly water change. Salt dont evaporate though. So the top up is just fresh water. The water change water is made up brackish.
@MnemonicHeadTrip
@MnemonicHeadTrip 3 года назад
Wow how did you set it up to do that with the tide??
@matlarsweta
@matlarsweta 3 года назад
Its a pretty easy and basic system. A sump underneath with a pump on a timer. A three pipes with some valves connected between the tanks. One for low tide, one for the inflow pump and one for the drain of the high tide. When the pump is on it floods the tank, as it raise the water and don’t fully drain as fast in the low tide until it reaches the main high tide point. When the pump is off 6 hours later it drains, almost as fast as it filled up.

@Living_Life242
@Living_Life242 Год назад
The upkeep for this must be ridiculous. Having to pump and drain all that water regularly. SALT water at that. Is the water being cycled or filtered constantly as well? Or do you have to dump out the old salt water and refill the tank with a fresh batch each time?

Its pretty cool, but a simple system. A sump, pump on timer, pipes connecting to top tank. Deep mud layer with microrganisms to act as a bio filter and mangroves. A bit of work, but a simple and rewarding system. Ill try to make an updated video soon :)
@lemonlizard1
@lemonlizard1 Год назад
have you noticed the fish/crabs acting any differently to normal aquarium setups?
@matlarsweta
@matlarsweta Год назад
Its always interesting to see how they utilize the flooded land areas for feeding during high tide and seeem to have their territories which they claim back as soon as the water raises. A deep mud layer also allows burrowing for the crabs and mudskippers( still awaiting the import of mudskippers here). A normal aquarium, these guys would miss out on acting on these natural behaviors and therefore you loose out on important enrichment, welfare and best practice husbandry.
@xXthechameleonXxog
@xXthechameleonXxog Год назад
Would love to see which way you achieved the slow raising and lowing of water level , are you filtering the water when it goes out of tank then. Pushing in cleaned water once it reaches minimum or delayed time at lowest/highest then rasing/lowering
@matlarsweta
@matlarsweta Год назад
Thanks. I will try to make an updated video soon and explain this a bit more. But its all a pump connected to a timer, pushing water up. the low tide drainage pipe gets flooded and does not drain as quickly as the water goes in, and therefore it will reach a high tide point and drain there/. As the timer and pump stops, water starts draining to the lower point. In nature. tide always goes out slower than what it comes in at during high tide. The high tide drains through a filter sock, there is internal filter pump too. However these are just extra additions. in a mangrove set up, you would not actually need a filter as a deep mud layer with microorganisms and bacteria acts as a bio filter. SO its more natural. Water is only muddy and low visual when the inhabitants stir it up during feeding and other activities.

@matlarsweta
@matlarsweta Год назад
As a mangrove set up and using mud, filtration can be tricky. In this case this is a bio active set up. A deep mud layer with living microrganisms and bacteria acts as a filter. any dead stuff gets eaten and disappears. nutrients left over is taken up by mangroves.. We do run a pump with filter and a filter sock for the overflow high tide in the sump for just stirred up mud sediments/ More coming on new video soon :) stay tuned.
