American viewer here. The video recommends changing the format to normal. That might make sense in the UK where there is no GMRS. Keeping it as a GMRS radio works better for me. I already have a UV5R which is a Ham radio. I use the Tidradio H3 exclusively for GMRS.

We use the M-11's and the H-3's around the farm here. I take the H-8's out on the quads in the woods. Honestly I really like the sound out of the Tidradio's.

I’m a serious geek on 1970s/80s tech’ although my passion is weirdly video recorders. I collect all the weird formats. One day I’ll dig out some retro stuff and show it off! Im a newbie and I bought both the H3 and h8. they arrived a few days ago. Are they analogue or digital? Because I am able to hear my H8 triggering the repeater nearby, but I can not receive other voices, only scrambled response. Its not the squeltch, CTCSS is set right, direction is minus and correct, offset is correct also. I was thinking that the repeater might be only compatible to digital. Tried other repeaters too, with the same result. Need help.
Hi mate, I don't think the H8 has one but the H3 does have a scrambler built in (it's menu item #46) - that'll make everything sound weird but you'll be able to understand it as speech, even if it's not intelligable. These radios are analogue - if you're hearing DMR or similar digital it usually sounds like a helicopter, or at least I think so anyway and you won't get anything intelligible out of it. My first check would be to make sure the Scrambler is set to OFF, also you might be annoying people on the repeater as to them you'll also sound weird and unintelligible. You won't be opening a digital repeater with analogue tones as they work rather differently. If you're actually getting in to the repeater, I doubt it's any other settings. Hope that helps a bit? I'd be looking at the scrambler as the culrpit!
