I never used to like Bonsai plants or thought it was something I could commit to. They are definitely a skill not everyone has the grit for. I do admire them but also used to cringe at the amount of torture it would have to go through to get to the artists desired shape. Just the type of gardener I would be is I like seeing plants grow and thrive... So cutting off all the growth you achieve always seemed like you are taking huge steps back. Like I would only prune plants if you see it's struggling or has a bad bug infestation. Saying that, is because I get attached to plants and I don't enjoy hurting them, as I want to solve its growing problems than present it with constant challenges. But I have started growing a bonsai plant myself from seed, since October 2020 to get over my fears. At the moment I'm just letting it grow as it wants to but going to shape it soon but I want it to flow in with its natural growth and build on that...

Plants are not animals - so they don't feel like they do. Dont ascribe human emotions to plants either. Pruning branches is like trimming ones hair or nails is you did want an analogy.

i have a curley walking stick tree LIMB that i've used as a christmas tree for years. been studying it and decided to make a few snips to clean it up. last night i trimmed off some interesting small curley limbs. today i'm wondering why i didnt do it sooner!!! it's been hard to not just start whacking, the tiny curls i cut off were not first choice, decided they were most fragile and could break off anyway. looks planned now, like a bonsai!!! thank you

In a case like this, would it be possible to use a branch splitter to split the problematic branch in 4 sections, wire it, and then bend it to more aesthetically pleasing position? I would appreciate any opinions on the matter. Thank you for another great video!

That thick branch would be too stiff to bend by branch splitting. It is also very brittle and would break if we did that.

@peterchan3100 3 года назад
Unless you are wanting to grow it into a long branch, then cut it off. If you want it to grow into a proper branch just leave it alone and it will thicken in time - be patient. Also the thin long shoots which grow in winter when you keep the Elm indoors tend to be very weak. If you want a strong Elm then grow it outdoors. They are very hardy and you get a stronger tree growing it outdoors.
