Excited to see the pond. Carp (koi and goldfish) are pretty good at keeping algae under control. Another fun fish that gets pretty big and is suited to pond life in your zone would include plecos! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to growers from zone 5 and under joining the crew :)
My chickens haven't turned their beaks up to grubs and they're pretty spoiled, lol! Sometimes it just takes them a moment to be willing to try something new if you have a young flock with no older chickens to "show them the way". 🐔 Your February garden is looking great!
Our chickens will race to them every time I toss one over to them. It's the most hilarious nugget stampede ever! Never had a problem turning them way, they have taken a moment to realize what it was though.
Hey off topic thing, I hope this isn’t weird. I was recently diagnosed with Hashimotos, it took forever and I’ve lost so much weight that I’m on a feeding tube. I’ve been stuck in bed for months, slowly trying to gain weight. You and your channel have been a HUGE part of my happy place during this time! You motivate me SO much to get through this and finally get back into gardening! There’s so much I want to do in terms of gardening and homesteading and I’ve been studying/taking notes while watching your videos and I’m getting a whole notebook filled up with your gardening tips 😁 I can’t wait to get your books soon as well! Anyways just wanted to say thank you if you see this. Your consistency and care means sooo much to us, but ESPECIALLY to people like me lol. @Olivia Ponce De León This is not really my place, and I'm not a doctor, but I wanted to mention this, just in case it might help: My friend finally found the right kind of doctor to help her, it was then she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. The type of Dr she's now seeing is called a Functional Dr. Also known as an Integrative Medicine Dr. The Functional Dr. is also an MD, and perfectly legal, no worries there! The difference is, this type of Dr will go to the trouble of figuring out WHY the Hashimotos has happened, and then figure out how to get you all straightened out & back to homeostasis, as much as possible. Instead of a "regular" MD who generally just prescribes bandaids to cover the problem(s) up. If this is new info for you, please research it. This type of Doc really is a life saver! And not many people know about them. If you already know about it, then just ignore me!! I hope your journey to better health goes smoothly for you. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
@@gardengatesopen this is actually VERY helpful!! MD and DO Dont tend to get along very well. In fact, many of my doctors all last year kept trying to say my gut issues came from “anxiety,” when in reality it was my hyperthyroidism causing my anxiety. And usually Hashimotos causes HYPOthyroid, meanwhile I have HYPERthyroid. It’s a weird situation and with no known cause other than just an “unlucky gene.” And many DO doctors are hidden and mixed up with self-help diet books (which can be useful but not total cures.) So this is actually very helpful! ❤️💕 thank you! 😍
@Olivia Ponce De León OH! I'm SOOOO GLAD!!! This information also helped me as I have an "autoimmune" disease. And for the longest time I was a good little patient (YEARS!), I did what my MD doctor told me to do, and for many years took the heavy duty medication for it. Well, that medication was only targeting this one problem, (which is what RX drugs are made for, not knocking them, just pointing it out) It turns out I was just robbing Peter to pay Paul, so to speak. Meanwhile, those drugs have messed up all my other organs, and systems! And I STILL have the autoimmune disease going on. Now, I'm on the path of trying to fix all the damage done from that medicine. Anyway, I wish I had known about Functional Doctors back when I was first diagnosed. The Functional Doctor encompasses the entire body, instead of just pointing a gun at one symptom, and hoping for the best, without even bothering to find out WHY this issue has come up in the first place. I just feel it's a better approach to look at the body as a whole system, instead of employing a specialist for each symptom, and then just hope all the specialists talk to each other concerning my body as a whole. (Which they really don't do, in my experience.) I am going to stop there as I could probably go on FOR DAYS on this subject!! But the place we started was right here on You Tube. There ARE quite a few good Functional Doctors with YT channels just trying to get the word out about how they practice medicine differently. And they do a good job at explaining how they practice, even talk about specific diseases, and how in many cases, they are treatable. Simply search Functional Doctors, and start watching! I found what they had to say extremely interesting. A lot of the videos are an hour, or more, but completely worth watching. Check them all out and come to your own conclusion. I also found watching a multitude of channels like this helped me to choose a Functional Doctor in my area. What I mean is- I now have a better understanding of HOW to choose a Dr. If that makes sense? Which reminds me, depending on where you live, you might have to travel a bit to get to a Functional Doctor. But the good news is there are more Doctors opening practices like this. Unfortunately, you might also have to weed out the not so good ones too, bcuz the other side of the coin is that with more Dr's opening up these types of practices, it means they just aren't quite up to snuff. Which does make putting your health in someone else's hands quite difficult at times! I totally get that. It was the deep research that helped me in this area. I wish you the very best in your recovery, I really do!! I wholeheartedly believe you have more options than what the standard MD's are telling you about. And I'm not against MD's either, altho it may sound that way! I've just come to realize their approach to medicine is not entirely their fault. They're simply doing what they've been taught to do in medical school = Western Medicine. That's just how Western Medicine works. And everything they've been taught is not all bad, far from it! I would just rather have a Doctor who combines ALL the medical knowledge, from ALL the cultures, not JUST Western medicine. Or more importantly, to have a Dr who WANTS to combine all the cultures, to simply get to the bottom of WHY my body went off-kilter in the first place! And then start fixing ALL the issues that way. What a concept!! (OH gosh, there I go again! I'm off the deep end again! Ok, I really AM going to stop here!!) If we run across each other again, I would be very interested in hearing about which path you end up taking! Sending you good vibes!! Largely advice for anyone new to pomegranates: Make sure you prune and shape the poms before the buds really start bursting with growth in spring. It'll help it grow better branches and have better airflow, but they also only flower and fruit on new growth, so lots of old growth isn't necessary
I LOVE that you're adding more diverse growing conditions/styles/etc to your team. You are by far my favorite gardening channel for any kind of educational/informative content and it will be nice to see that same level of care/attention to detail carried over and presented for conditions that are closer to my own. I'll still be hyped to see what's going on at the homestead, but maybe not feel so bad that I don't have grapefruit in February lol
Love San Pasqual Valley Soils! We got about 100 cubic yards of mulch from them (huge project) and also their amended topsoil. They are down the road from us, and owned by our neighbors!
You can eat the broccoli flowers and the flower pods they are delicious! Also the broccoli flowers are an expensive delicacy in some fancy restaurants and stores! Plus they are soooooo good for you! If you don't want to eat them all at once you can freeze dry them

I loved using Neem Oil when growing pot, just make sure you mix a teaspoon of Dawn when making your spray mixture, the soap from the Dawn helps the neem oil stick to the plant leaves and anywhere else you spray it. For a pump sprayer, I don't know the proportions, but for a regular spray bottle, I mixed 1 Gallon to 1 tablespoon of Neem Oil to 1 teaspoon of Dawn (just squirted the dawn from the bottle lol).
My idea for the outdoor kitchen sink is to get the shreder intalled as well so after i've done cutting out my produce i can just chuck the remains into the shredder and walla!! compost.
Feed those grubs in a tray feeder to the wild birds if your chickens aren’t interested. That’s what I do and the birds love them. I have birds coming to my yard anyways because of multiple feeders (and hopefully the bird garden I’m putting in this spring) so they love when they get a grub treat.
Hmm, I never gave any thought to grubs in metal garden beds (starting with 3 beds this year). I’ve got moles that seem to do a great in-ground control job on grubs. My garden is chemical-free and has reached a wonderful bio-balance. It’s a jungle of insect carnage out there! You have helped me to shift my mindset from “gardens” toward “homestead”. This attitude makes a big difference in my attitude and work ethic (‘cause I’m old, cranky and lazy!). Winter greens are growing, my fruit trees are pruned and fertilized, veg seeds are started…..whew. Potatoes into the grow pots today. Keep inspiring us!

Sup Kevin. I often get those grubs too and my chickens absolutely love them. They’ll chase each other around trying to get the grubs from each other. I’ve usted nematodes and they have worked well for my raised beds. I forget that product name, but I usually pick it up at City Farmers Nursery here in San Diego. Cheers.
you can buy small barley bails (smaller than a football) put in a mess bag and it will keep the pond clear. I have seen full bails put in large farm ponds the they cleared them right up.

I'm so excited for the chickens! I got mine last year and now I have 40 hens that I sell eggs from (40 eggs a day... thats alot) that now have helped pay for my small barn!

Ive never seen someone use one of those shovels for snow here in Wisconsin, but those are great on the landscape jobside for scooping mulch off the ground or topsoil if your really strong.

The crows are great to keep birds of prey away from the chicken but they have been know to pick off baby chicks. Happy chickens! Thanks for the PNW information(Oregon viewer).
My chickens absolutely love grubs, so much so that they fight over them. Never heard of chickens not liking grubs. I rejoice when I find grubs because I know my chickens will get a fat meal treat. Same goes for fat tomato worms. Also, every raised bed will decrease the soil level and has nothing to do with grubs. The soil is lose and compacts over time. Worms and other beneficial life will eat the decaying organic material turning it into great fertilizer. I usually find grubs at the very bottoms of my pots where the moisture level is higher. Grubs do eat roots and can be a problem, but saying they are the reason your soil is lower is just plain wrong.

I have a huge grub problem (from green June beetles) in my garden beds. This weekend I am going to completely dig out my beds and get rid of hopefully all of them. They completely ruined my winter garden. California doesn't allow milky spore or beneficial nematode sale, but I was able to get a hold of milky spore. Apparently it doesn't work or work well on the Green June Beetle larva (grubs); it hasn't worked for me yet, I'm in Los Angeles County.
I really want to tease you about that not being a snow shovel. The ones they sell at my local hardware store are about 2x as wide. That shovel would work nicely for snow though
Couldn't see the grub but i assume its a 'white curl grub', very common in australia and are normally the larval stage of most beetles, they can eat plant roots but i have only ever noticed them doing it to dead/dying plants, also when they turn into beetles they eat slugs, so i think they are beneficial to the garden, plus my chickens love them.
Our chickens fight each other for those grubs. They love em. I hate them though and hope you do a video about how to help control or get rid of them. Thank you for the video.
What a coincidence! I was doing a 10k run with Endurance Race Series last weekend at San Pasqual Valley and on the way back, I drove right past San Pasqual Soils! I instantly thought to myself, "I wonder if Kevin knows about this place?" Looking forward to your opinion on their quality and value.
Kevin, you said that you are going to try to find more people in different climates and budgets. You should definitely try to get someone in a tropical zone too. I started planting this year on zone 11b and we are averaging about 100in of rain a year. It would definitely be nice to have more content on the challenges of heavy rainfall.
Brokelife- I totally agree! Gardening in humidity and heavy rain is so hard!!! People are always like, "Oh, it should be easy, it's always warm." But I just fight fungus, fungus, fungus, root rot, and fungus. ;'D I haven't found many channels on gardening in that kind of humidity- have you?
@@jennhoff03 For sure! And the ones that I do find most of the time just grow with synthetic fertilizers or just a different type of gardening that is not really environmentally conscious.
I’m watching this while eating grapefruit haha. Maybe I’ should grow a grapefruit tree. I live in Oceanside and planted a bare root plum, blackberries and grapes last month. I’m working on some cauliflower (not from seed) and nasturtiums. Nothing happened with my first batch of nasturtiums. Maybe I didn’t water enough? It’s all a learning experience!
It’s dec in 10a/9b and my lemon tree got really sick. I cut it down to main branches only a few leaves and I’m worried I ruined it lol. Been spraying it with water and tiny bit of dish soap still
Can I make one small correction. That shovel is not a "Snow Shovel" As a Midwest farm kid we used those for and called it a "Grain Scoop" But perhaps it's a regional colloquial.
Dude throw in some algae eaters into that pond 1 maybe 2 as the koi will help but that is a large space. Best choice Chinese algae eater super camouflage so u don’t need to worry about birds and the do a heck of a job especially in your climate
You should befriend your local crows! Birds in the raven and crow family are incredibly intelligent, can learn to use tools, and share information with each other (including grudges against humans they don't like!). Let them see you leave some nuts on the fence line and they may even start leaving you gifts in return!
They sure do communicate well. You do that and they will tell a few friends who tell more friends and so on. In not much time you could have a flock, what's called a murder of crows....they especially like smoked salmon!
@@joannc147 Joan NC just have a picnic. It's like they smell it and they will come. Had a snack inside the car and one landed on the hood and looked sideways at me all up close and personal...I don't mean to waste smoke salmon...one of my faves. Tossed a piece of skin out the window on the ground and he went for it then flew back up and looked for more...cawing as he did. Then came another and another and we were surrounded by over 30 of them. Lol
I'm a little worried about the chicken coop. the space between the ground and the bottom frame, are you going to put a wire mesh there? and are you going to use a small grid like a 1/4 inch or smaller? I think I would bury it some too. I can't wait to see your chickens.
I want to buy property that has a river going through it so I can just use river water for my plants. I'm sure I could figure out a way to pump it so long as it isn't illegal.

I would love if you could get a person in Hawaii! Pests and diseases are hard to deal with here because we don't have a winter to kill them off and I would love advise on how to deal with unique problems we face here!
I'm also in San Diego and have had major struggles with grubs (and whatever critter likes to dig them up and eat them). Milky spore specifically targets grubs that are not native to SD so is pretty useless here. I have had some success with beneficial nematodes.
