I want to try to make shirts like this for me and my wife for Valentine’s Day. Hoping not to do like I usually do spending 5x the cost of what I could buy them for. Just love the satisfaction of doing it my self. Great video by the way.

The important part was missed, for instruction the heart ❤️ I wanted to know how to TIE the heart. You showed mainly to to add dye like most but not the cool black heart 🖤

I'm sorry. To tie the heart I've made a stencil out of a piece of plastic cutting board (just the cheap kind that you get from the Dollar Store), then I traced it onto the shirt with a washable marker. Once that was done - I fan folded the traced line (I usually start at the top of the heart - I think it is easier to make the turn in the heart in the beginning of the fan folds.) Then I tied it up with some sinew and pulled it tight. I like to use sinew to tie up my hearts because I like the definite white line around them. I have several other heart videos. What does the back of the shirt look like?

Thank you! I put my dyed items into a long plastic tub that has a rack down in the bottom so that the excess dye can drain away from the shirt. Then I put the lid on the plastic tub and allow them to process for 24 hours without drying out.

If you are using the Procion Fiber Reactive dyes like I use - the dye will keep for several days in a cool spot. If you are using some of the premixed dyes that have soda ash added to the dye, they are only good for a few hours. With the dye I use, some colors degrade faster than others, but I've used dye that is several days old without any problems. If they are getting old - they will just be more pastel.

Hi so for the heart should I draw on one side then flip it and draw on the other side?

No, when you fold the shirt in 1/2 what is on the front of the shirt will be on the back as well. Also, since you are starting your heart drawing on the middle seam you only have to draw 1/2 of it on.

I usually do turn my shirts inside out before I dye them. You won't mess it up though if you didn't turn it inside out. I do that to avoid any speckling that can happen if all of the dye didn't dissolve.

So u don't have to cover it up with a bag or anything while it sits to process?

I have a long rack down inside of a long plastic tub or tote that I put the shirt on to process. I put the lid on the tub and they won't dry out. Since there is a rack down inside, the shirt doesn't sit in any excess dye runoff either which helps keep the colors from blending and muddying.

@@kylemessicktiedyecollector5690 I'm not really sure. I haven't ever counted the amount of shirts I can get from a 1 pound container of dye. It kind of depends on the size shirt and the design. I can get quite a few out of a container though.

Wait, is it better to let the shirt dry then Dye most vid dye while the shirt is wet ?

It isn't necessary to let the shirt dry, but I usually dye most of my items dry. For thicker folds like mandalas and geodes, in my opinion it is easier to get good color saturation into the middle of the fold if the shirt is dry. The fibers aren't already so full and saturated with soda ash solution and so they are more eager to soak up the dye.
