I can't imagine what Hawk must be feeling in the 80s, seeing how far the community had come. Everything he had to endure, give up on and also constantly hide his true self deep inside from the world all his life. Marcus and Frankie built a beautiful life together, him and Tim could have had that too, even back then. 😭Also, I just cannot understand at all, and forgive, the gay people actively hurting other gay people, like McCarthy or Cohn. How could you be so traumatized or cruel, to commit such crimes against your own people??
The kink in the book is a lot less toxic, because you get the internal monologue from Tim showing he is totally into it, if not outright initiating things (like asking Hawk to hit him) in healthier circumstances. That being said, it is still not good, and their relationship is not okay. McCarthy IRL was actually rumored to be gay by a paper, but it was without any evidence. This is artistic license by the show. Roy Cohn on the other hand, was an evil asshole. He was undeniably gay, and he destroyed his own queer community for power. It sucked for everyone in this time. Cishet women were unsuspectingly going into marriages with gay men. Gay men were being forced into marriages with cishet women as cover. Same goes for Lesbian women and trans people. Everyone was miserable as a result. Fucking homophobic and transphobic "God-led" society. Not to mention all the racist shit.
The comment about who we love not who we sleep with is actually one of the best lines of the film A Single Man, an excellent gay film you should watch.
It's been weird to see ppl online and in the show drag Fuller for leading Tim on when he was fine keeping his distance from him until Marcus guilted him into getting back with Tim (which now makes me side-eye Marcus in ep one 80s scenes cos dude is culpable for Tim never moving on). I blame both in the toxic relationship cos Fuller while being distant and sometimes cold also laid out his boundaries clearly and Tim keeps ignoring them and endangering them both. I get it that the viewers get all one-sided cos Tim is a puppy dog idealist wanting a Disney Prince but the dude flat-out forgets he is living during McCarthyism (also viewers seem to ignore him being a McCarthy fanboy when they talk about how innocent he is)
Can't wait for you to cry your eyes out with Ep. 5 it killed me like a million times already. (I'm in love with someone who has a girlfriend. Both of us are queer. You can see where that goes...)

This episode is and always will be my most replayed. If you like SNOWBALLS, episode 4 is Christmas. Episode 5 fucking wrecked me. Episode 6 is just depressing. Episode 3 is the hottest/best. It is all downhill from here due to Hawk's selfishness! Love you guys and your reactions - I have been refreshing your page for days waiting for this episode's review! You did not disappoint.
Yeah, during the significantly kinky sex scene in this episode Tim is very clearly bratting right before the sex scene happens... It's pretty classic, IMO. Bringing up that he kissed another man at the bar(in an attempt to make Hawk jealous but Hawk didn't bite) and then physically escalating things further in a challenge, basically (which Hawk then takes that bait).. He was bratting... he wanted things to go as they did, probably(that's usually the outcome that brats want from my limited understanding of brats🤷♀️...they're not really my thing.)... Is it the most healthy depiction of a BDSM dynamic? Absolutely not. but it's one that I've seen before IRL, unfortunately(nobody within my friend group, thankfully, but I have tangentially seen it playing out)... But yeah definitely absolutely not the most healthy out there, for sure...but then I guess it wouldn't be as interesting TV if that were the case. 🤷♀️ But yeah I do honestly wish there were more healthy depictions of a BDSM dynamic in the media out there. The one that I can really only think of that's relatively healthy, from what I saw of it, was Veronica and Kevin from Shameless US. They had pretty open and honest communication about the sex that they would have... Things they liked or didn't like. Most other depictions I've seen out there have... issues... Things that absolutely could be solved with proper honest and open communication and trust like BDSM relationships should have... Because trust and consent and communication are kind of like pillars of the community in a lot of ways. And this relationship definitely doesn't have all of those. They have a decent amount of trust... But they don't have a lot of communication and the consent can kind of be iffy at times, IMO. Because Hawk will often kind of spring kinks on to Tim without previously discussing that those things were going to be introduced into the scene they are doing... There absolutely can be some BDSM dynamics where that is the case and there's enough trust that not discussing things beforehand is okay and healthy but... What's being explored in this show specifically. It's definitely dealing with a more unhealthy dynamic for sure... But I think that's kind of the point(like with interview with the vampire) it's not supposed to be healthy. Or at least I very much hope that the writers of the show don't think that this dynamic is the healthiest out there!
2:16 the significance in this scene for me is that Hawk still prefers to deal with his emotions alone. 4:43 same me lol. phenomenal isn't it? 9:20 he didn't just want to kiss lol and how I wish Skippy had accepted!! 11:14 that's the thing but a/ we can't resist just like Skippy can't resist Hawk and b/ it's also because the emotional impact of what happens to them is stronger if we are attached to them 16:17 yeah, I'm one of those people so I got real excited by that scene but later, as I processed it, I had to recognize that it was all kinds of wrong. Even if Skippy wanted it, their relationship is so dysfunctional and the power dynamics between them are so messy, it strikes me more as abuse than kink. Very regrettable. 19:38 accurate. Disgusting but accurate. Think all the closeted Republicans today or even Hawk who throws that boy we 1st see in the show right under the bus to protect his friend and himself. Also, I agree with everything you said about Marcus and also about Frankie and Skippy.

I'm reading the book (because of the show, obviously!) And... I'm still waiting for Hawkins to show that he is not only using Tim. I kind of hate him. Tim is angel in the book, so naive! :'(
Thomas Mallon's novel is a fine piece of work, but what Ron Nyswaner and the team of writers did to enlarge and expand its scope in every way for the series is brilliant. Tim and Hawk's relationship becomes even more complex and rich, and the revised trajectory of Tim's life in particular is wonderful (and beautifully acted by Bailey).
It was a sad, scary time in American history. As a result, relationships were almost impossible, and many relationships that did exist were not healthy because there was such much self loathing, and internalized homophobia.

Ya sé que no tiene nada que ver pero no me gustó la caracterización que le hicieron a Matt para que Hawk se viera mayor. Por otra parte, yo ya toda bajoneada por lo de ña enfermedad de Tim y ustedes me hicieron reir con lo de las mascotas 😂 22:4q eso que fue antes, otro salto en el tiempo o cómo porqué Hawk le pide eso a Tim¿Qué onda con esa petición?
