I love the Fletcher: people assume torps less than the Japanese DD's even though they're just as good. Great smoke, great dpm, maneovrable, good for dot-stacking and defensive AA. 9.6km firing detection so invisifire is an option. The only thing bad about it is those firing arcs. It can do everything you'd want out of a DD basically
Got it a week ago , spend a lot of free xp to retrain captain and get out of stock, its awesome.Slowly getting used to the arcs. Its nice to not be afraid to meet any dd, I even fight gearings (although normally I should lose).I wont get aft though, dont want to try these arcs at very long ranges ;p I am unlucky though, all my games have cvs, I am spotted half the time and my torps too :(
I didn't get aft as well, figuring at those kind of ranges it's just not worth it with those kinds of arcs. And for CV's you have defensive fire, even though i'm not focusing on AA with my build i can still shoot down a fair few of them and it messes up their drops
I have loved the Fletcher from Day 1, I don't run Def AA but I do run BFT/AFT, once you've gotten good enough to torpedo beat planes you won't need the AA (But BFT/AFT helps knock them down on the way in). I use mine specifically as a DD hunter, so I use speed boost to get around the map as I would or to boogie if over run. This saves on smoke in a pinch.
Holy shit, I knew American torpedoes were good, but I had no clue they reloaded 20 seconds faster than a shimmys... But yes, according to WG, there's nothing wrong with that
The Shima has a slightly lower RoF but her torps hit harder, travel further and are quicker for 2 of her 3 different torp loadouts.. personally I still think the Shima has the edge considering everyone sets up the Shima to be a torp boat, so with commander skills and retrofits the Shima will still hold the edge. (And her torps have almost every advantage over the Gearing too)
***** but considering the compromises you have to make with Shimakaze torps (1) you want the range? Great, here are some of the slowest and easiest to detect torps in the game (2.5km) against high skill T10 captains. (2) you want the speed? Sure, here are some great 76 knot torps with 1.9km detection, but with a range of 8km, almost completely redundant with the popularity of radar ships. Not forgetting the lackluster concealment, accidentally finding a Fletcher or Gearing (which has the same concealment) nearly always proves fatal. (3) you're completely correct about Shimakazes torps doing the most damage, but that's all the Shimakaze has going for it. The fact that the best concealed, fastest torps of the war, surprise surprise, reward you by being neither simultaneously (or particularly useful in the current hydroacoustic/radar meta). From a game play perspective, I get the Shimakaze torp reload must be nerfed because of dpm, but dpm means nothing if you can't reliably hit a target to begin with, nor have the means of self defence when venturing to closer ranges. The high gun alpha damage means nothing if said gun is incapacitated by a Fletcher shooting 25% faster than you, causing you to lose a 1/3 of your firepower. Rant over haha, sorry that was quite long
The only viable torps are 12km. They are much better than the 20km torps, but the torps are somehow, easier to detect than the worse concealed American torps?
The Shimakaze launches salvos of 15 torpedoes from three launchers, whereas the Fletcher and Gearing can only launch 10 from two launchers. The Shimakaze torps hit harder (do more damage), have longer range, and are faster, except for the third Shimakaze torpedo loadout, which hits REALLY hard. Seriously, don't underestimate the threat of walls of 15 torpedoes traveling at high speeds over very long range.
SaltyWaffles don't get me wrong, the torps are great, but I'm just not sure why they have worse concealment than American torps, when Japan's oxygen torpedoes were far and away the best concealed torpedoes. It's like the torps were nerfed, but nothing got significantly buffed to make up for it
