Just like every wrestling promotion, WWE and AEW were forced to adapt to the demands of the pandemic. One of the more eye-catching changes was the inclusion of 'cinematic' matches, experimental productions which tested the limits of the medium - for better and worse. Ross Tweddell and Jack The Jobber are here to decide which are the best, and which deserve to get in the bin.
From John Cena's trip to the Firefly Funhouse, to AJ Styles' Boneyard clash with The Undertaker, to the chaos of the AEW Stadium Stampede matches, this is the Cinematic Matches Tier List!

Firefly fun house match was one of the only matches in the last few years I went back and watched multiple times it was so good. I also keep Funko pops of thuganomics Cena and the fiend next to each other on a small shelf for it.

I disagree with the 2020 Money in the Bank placement. It was one of the most sports entertaining matches I've ever watched. Just unfortunate they could not capitalize on the Otis momentum

The Firefly Funhouse Match, for me, is the final form of a cinematic match. Used the medium perfectly and totally took advantage of what can be done in a pre-taped on-set environment.

@@Deadguy2322forreal but there was a little bit of wrestling in it. Hell, it even happened in a wrestling ring, so it could be argued that it's more of a match than some others on the list. Whatever you want to call it, I thought it was fantastic anyway

For the opening two or three minutes, I had a slow start audible chant going, “Get in the bin, get in the bin...” The story wrote its own ending for this very tier list. Haha! Fantastic! It wasn’t all for nigh…

I liked the Sting and Darby vs. Team Tazz, a lot. And I *really* want Sting to have a Stingmobile. Remember when Team Tazz abducted Darby? Perfect time to see Sting blaring down the highway chasing them in his Stingmobile. 🤣

That’s only in the pick of destiny film. If you listen to Tribute it’s actually a tribute to Stairway to Heaven. You can sing parts of Tribute over Stairway and vice versa. Also they segue into Stairway when they play tribute live

Stadium Stampede Boneyard Firefly Funhouse Street Fight (Sting’s return match) Greatest Wrestling Match Ever Those are my favourites. Oh wait, Stadium Stampede 2 was good. I don’t think Omega and Hardy vs La Sex Gods was cinematic so that’s why that’s not on the list.

Firefly Funhouse match was amazing! I was shocked my favorite moment wasn’t brought up though where we saw a glimpse of the Eater of Worlds rewriting the finish to WM 30 which was incredible

I really liked the sammy and Matt match. It felt like a bit of a more “hardcore” wrestling take on the cinematic match. It was a bit slow sometimes tho so I get it. It was better than alright tho

Braun was the universal champion at the time of the swamp fight. He held the title from Wrestlemania when he beat Goldberg until Summerslam when he lost to The Fiend. And then The Fiend lost the title to Roman at the weird PPV that happened like a week after Summerslam, and he's held it ever since then.

Yeah and I'd say it would be comfortably in the Best as well. Felt like a season finale. Arcade Anarchy also sort of straddled the line between a traditional match and cinematic.

You know for all the grief we may give that absurd MITB match, its been over a year and look how many details they remembered. Just a shame WWE doesn't know what to do with Asuka presently. It's Asuka. One of the best female wrestlers in the world. Give her a tag partner and let her go after the main roster or NXT tag champs at least.

Pretty much every cinematic match in the WWE has been terrible. Taker v AJ was very good, The Greatest Match Ever was good and the Money in the Bank matches were fun but the rest of them all belong in Get in the Bin, apart from the firefly funhouse match which was so bad that it belongs about ten levels below Get in the Bin and is right at the top of the Worst Moments in Wrestlemania history list. It was utterly awful from start to finish.

Entertaining stuff and I'll watch Jack and Ross talk about anything wrestling... but the Cinematic List has been done by folks a few times now and it seems like the only interesting question is how does that ranker feel about the Firefly Funhouse match. It's either 1) head and shoulders the best of the bunch, transcending the cinematic match into something greater, 2) one of the best with the usual other contenders or 3) not a match and the reviewer whines and cries and pretends to be the only defender of wrestling.

I don't care about the Observer but it was rated a 5 star match I think, and they don't rate cinematic matches. It's all just a technicality really, there's nothing special about cinematic matches compared to a lot of taped matches. It would easily top this list though IMO.

one final beat didn't need to happen. it would have made for an excellent climax to a movie or a tv show but it was unnecessary in wrestling. also I liked Cole vs Dream only for it being iirc the only match in NXT Cole won with the panama sunrise. it was shot well but I never wanted to see Dream on my screen ever again at that point

Imo the greatest wrestling match ever sucked (ikr, ironic). I just couldn't get into how fake and overproduced it was whilst also pretending to be an actual match. It trying to be something that it wasn't just took me out of it. If your gonna have a cinematic match it should embrace the fact it is a cinematic match and not pretend it's an actual wrestling match. It was also made worse by not only pretending to be an actual match but pretending to be the best wrestling match ever, despite not even being an actual wrestling match.
