I agree with most comments. As a gemologist, this ring being an unheated Burmese sapphire flank with two old European clean diamonds & no less, a Tiffany brand even in today's market a replacement value would be in the six figures at least $100, 000 us. Nice classic ring which is stylish even in today's designs.

What did he mean replacement at tiffanys ? Like she could exchange that ring for a 100k new ring ?

Could you prove its origin? And what does heat do to a stone?
@peteT269
@peteT269 Год назад
@@imisstoronto3121 Blue sapphires are very hard to determine origin on (compared to rubies, emeralds etc). Sometimes, you can do it based only in the types of inclusions present. Somtimes you can do it by measuring the absorbance of ultraviolet light, which produces quite a characterstic spectrum somtimes at low wavenumbers. If those fail, you can turn to chemical analyses. XRF spectrosocpy can give trace concentrations of Fe, V, Ga and Ti which can help diagnose Burma, but there is significant overlap with other origins, like Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Even better is LA-ICP-MS (a machine that costs about half a million dollars and requires a dedicated technician), because the data is approximately 10x more precise and you can also detect Mg. But even with this technique, maybe 20-30% of the time it's not possible to be definitive.
@peteT269
@peteT269 Год назад
@@imisstoronto3121 Heating the stone improves the clarity and colour. Most stones are heated. Unheated, high quality sapphries are considerably more valuable than heated stones.

It is a conservative value, the sapphire has to be tested for its quality and whether or not it came from Burma. An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, something can be appraised at a certain value, but it doesn't mean it will be sold for that. Although this is a beautiful ring, most people with money want modern cut stones because of the sparkle.

Sometimes the money is necessary for more important things. The insurance alone on the ring would not be cheap, and having a ring valued at $100K could also be worrisome to have in the home. So what, put it in a bank vault? People will do what they have to do even if selling it is the option. She would never get $100K for it, remember the appraiser said to replace it would be about $100K.

Justo Talkalottashit Plus his reputation as an appraiser is their entire job- if they are appraising incorrectly that costs them their name - as a jeweler I can tell you, they will always appraise conservatively to cover their butts - it’s much safer- not to mention, there’s appraising for the actual worth and appraising for insurance purposes- 2 separate things and the insurance appraisal will always be higher.

I had my wife's engagement ring custom made to resemble (half scale) this classic 3 stone design after we saw a similar, more modern version at Tiffany's in Chicago while dating. Fine untreated sapphires are hard to find. Her sapphire was Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The side diamonds were super ideal (AGS 0) cut diamonds. The ring featured in this episode is impressive in size and rarity.
@ABNMPmama
@ABNMPmama 3 года назад
What do you think about the evaluation of the appraiser? I was expecting the auction price to be what he set as a replacement value. Of course, I’m no expert, just an appreciator of fine jewelry. You would have more insight, considering the similarities and knowledge from purchasing your lucky wife’s beautiful engagement ring. I believe half scale would be more functional for everyday wear than the ring in this episode, too. I wear low profile rings, myself, because I play too much to wear anything else, but I make sure they’re adorned with something sparkly; it makes me smile. Lol
@TeslaRules1856
@TeslaRules1856 3 года назад
@@ABNMPmama I can’t comment on genuine Antique Tiffany values - I think that drives a good part of the price. Lastly most people understand the Diamond Cs but very few understand natural vs treated sapphires or good color in a sapphire. Nearly all sapphires are treated to look blue most come out of ground milky white.

This guy is nuts..at Tiffany's a single unset 3 carat, high quality mine cut stone from their antique section would likely come in for what he appraised the entire ring. I do hope she went elsewhere, had the stones photographed (mapped) and then reappraised, asking to be present while handled...unless she takes it back to Tiffany's..the diamonds..wow!! have the look of diamonds from the Golconda mine in India..very rare now. If the stones' origin is there, the value increases even more..man, I'd like to know if I am correct..I sure think I am.

The problem with most of the items presented is, what I perceive as a type of disrespect for some although it doesn’t seem disrespectful, if done properly, they would have gloved hands and at least wipe over surfaces for the camera. After all, some items such as the metals used in gunsmithing tarnish where the acids From fingerprints, eats into the surface, then needing to be totally cleaned and oiled again. Gems are just in boxes or in a stand and rarely do they take the care a jewellery store would take to reflect from a white background, which made the diamonds pop but the lesser dominant stone was ignored.

Diana Gero because the markup on jewelry is astronomical. The day you walk out of a jeweler with a high cost item, it loses 50-75 percent of its value. People are always shocked to learn that their jewels have very little value unless they are something quite unique and you are willing to wait a long time for the value to catch up. A diamond engagement ring purchased in the 1980s is probably only now reaching its original purchase price on the resale market. And if it’s not the right shape, it still won’t recoup that price.

an item is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. At an auction you need at least two people who want it who have money. If you put a high reserve on it, you could be holding on to it for a long time. Insurance value is always much higher and you have to pay the premiums which will be high for a piece of jewelry (besides, you can insure it for whatever you're willing to pay for up to the appraisal amount). What's it worth? If you use it as collateral you can only get a 50% value loan and pay interest. Tiffany isn't going to buy it back so replacement value is meaningless.

It might be quite hard, even for the very best gem labs, to work out where that sapphire came from. Blue sapphires are notoriously difficult to determine origins for, because all major origins have strongly overlapping chemical and spectrscopic properties. What's even harder though in this case is that this is a very old sapphire, and the reference gemstone collections of most top labs consistent of stones that were mined far later. If this is mined form a deposit that was exhausted before later mines opneed that fed the gem labs, then it might not have an modern precedent in the gem lab reference datasets.

The “35K” is what someone might be will to pay for it at a Auction. The ring is over 100 years old... If it ever had to be to “replace” it with a “similar” ring, he’s suggesting she would not be able to find another one at what the ring is valued. Factoring in inflation and the rarity of the ring, it would cost at least $100K to find something similar. If she does ensure her ring for $100,000 she’s going to have quite a hefty premium. 😊

That's it? I thought it would be worth more since it's actually a signature antique piece

That ring is worth way more than 25 to 30k! This kid underestimated by approximately double. At auction, it would easily get 60k for that ring.

My mom would definitely grab this ring even for 50k cash knowing that the size of the stones, unheated Burma sapphire, diamonds are clear on a Tiffany setting. 😂

@@susanc9525 tbf an appraisal is a prediction is it not? It's what he predicts the market would pay at auction during the current period. He did mention that if she were to buy a ring of same quality at tiffany's today she would be paying around 100,000.

I think if it takes $100,000 to replace it; it's worth $100,000.. I am sick of hearing about retail vs auction vs insurance value... lets come to more of a consensus; the art world is kind of the same way.. I think the $20,000-$30,000 is a pretty low estimate..

me too, esp for a T + Co piece! this always confuses me as if ring is lost and insured for 100k, one would be paid more if lost?! had a beautiful diamond which I sold, was sitting in safe for years insured - the insured value was high + had papers and such - yet, when I sold it, I barley rec'd 1/20th of insured value - had I lost the ring, I would have been better off as I believe they replace insured value, correct? I've never made a jewelry insurance claim but always use Jeweler's Mutual policies.....

You have to look at it from the proper perspective, for instance lets say you inherit a large ornate masonry house in a state of disrepair. The house in the current condition lets say would sell for $200k, therefore it has a value of $200k. However if the house burned to the ground the next day it would cost over million to build a similar structure in the modern era of similar materials and methods therefore making the replacement value much higher than the present value. This applies to almost all facets of the antique world, just look to any local antique shop, most times you'll find items like a mahogany dining table selling for nothing near what it would cost to make today. Proportionally it would cost much more to make a similar item today with the same woods, if even at all as often the quality of wood and materials was higher and more abundant, yet you could easily pick up a table for under $200 that would costs thousands to commission today.

Insurance replacement value is the closest to "real" value. Buying new diamonds will cost ?, a new sapphire will cost ?, and the metal and cost of a jewelry designer to remake it will cost ?. Add those up and you get what the ring is worth.

@teddy23331 Diamonds and gemstones bought in a regular jewelry store have a mark-up of 500-600%. You should always buy from a designer/jewelry maker or gemstone wholesaler.

Both side stones would sell for 30-40k each in a solitaire setting IF it was in fact an official Tiffany ring….. So really, I’m thinking you wouldn’t be able to go into T&C and get this same ring brand new for less than $200,000USD You might get it for 170ish…. But an I color VVS clarity diamond that weighs 4.19 carats sells for $193,000USD at Tiffany&Co Which is why a Tiffany grade sapphire…(they only use top grades. Tiffany’s basic grade is GRADES above many jeweler’s top grades) would be worth much more than the (not so special) i color diamond ring I saw. I feel like a Tiffany quality (and rare) sapphire would be priced more along the lines (if not higher than) a D color Tiffany diamond rather than an I color. As i color diamonds are the lowest color grade you can get if you’re selecting a “colorless” diamond in the Tiffany world.

Just goes to show that what "my" jeweller is right ... jewellery isn't something you "invest" in. This thing would probably have brought a way higher estimate a few decades ago - when more people were into antiques. From my own experience trying to sell women's jewellery my dad spent quite a bit of money on back in the 70s and 80s: Don't buy any coloured stones (you never know whether or not the colour will still be en vogue down the line) - buy diamonds instead. We've had some sapphire rings and colliers that were no problem to sell, but I'm still trying to get rid of some ruby-ones of equal or better quality that just don't sell because of the colour of the stones. Don't buy anything too "of its time" - chances are, nobody will want to wear that stuff in 20 or 30 years. And if at all possible, get something from a reputable, widely known jeweller. Having a brand-name like Cartier or Tiffany on a piece will widen the group of potential buyers considerably.

If it is not a Burma sapphire Tiffany would sell it brand new for no less than $100k dollars! If it is brand new Burma sapphire Tiffany will sell it for almost $300k dollars! But if it is brand new Kashmir sapphire Tiffany will sell it for no less than $500k dollars!
