The Juilliard practice piano looks like it probably has stories to tell. Whenever I sit at such a piano, I always wonder who else played it before me, and what they were thinking/feeling at the time.

work your technique.... Beethoven sonatas take more technical skills than just about any other music to master imo. You really need to be strong on classical articulation (Mozart, Haydn) , have your scales so very fluid, and keep the weight out of your elbows, hands, and wrists. Tension will slow you down incredibly.
@orpheus1180
@orpheus1180 6 лет назад
Weight is used for articulation, but one must know how to use it and then get rid of it or else your hands will turn into rock like claws trying to play Beethoven.

It's tough because the world of classical music is so obsessed with virtuosic perfection. I was a piano performance major and just being in the practice rooms was uncomfortable. It's like, you just want people to hear the finished product and not the hours of cathartic repetitive insanity that goes into bringing a piece to a performance-worthy level. And especially for professionals who are trying to make a living doing this, you have to maintain the mystique that this music achieves that performance level by some kind of gifted magic that only the uniquely blessed possess! But nah, it's just nose to the grindstone work. Knowing how you want something to sound/feel and doing it over and over until that inner vision becomes reality.
@TiffanyPoonpianist
@TiffanyPoonpianist 6 лет назад
Interesting comment and I get what you mean, but my point is actually not to maintain the mystique. I actually don't like that mystique, which is why I've been doing the kinds of videos I've been doing in the past few months :) I just honestly don't feel comfortable having someone watch my all and entire "conversations" with the music and the piano, that's all.
@spacevspitch4028
@spacevspitch4028 6 лет назад
Tiffany Poon Hey! I've been meaning to respond to this just to thank you for taking the time to. I understand and appreciate your comments. This is actually the first Beethoven sonata I ever worked on but it's been 20 years since I touched it or heard it. I was surprised how much I remembered once you got into it! I never learned an entire Beethoven sonata for similar reasons. I love Bach, the romantics, and modern composers but the "common practice" period stuff never really hit me that hard. BUT lately I've been listening to Arrau's recording of all the Beethoven sonatas and finding them pretty amazing! AND I've been really enjoying your videos lately as well. Your Rachmaninoff Bb sonata was my entry point (love love love it!). I'd heard your name before but never got a chance to hear any of your performances. Anyway, looking forward to hearing more of this sonata. I hope you see it to the end!
@WSJade
@WSJade 3 года назад
KIBanshee9 That is exactly how I felt when I returned to Classical piano after a hiatus. I was used to that level of perfection and polished playing, and fortunately growing up I lived in a house with a Steinway I could practice on all hours of the night. In my final years of playing I was competing and picked up pieces insanely quickly as well. Now I live in an apartment, and without going back to basics, jumped into late Romantic concertos without prep (so worried what neighbours would think, so worried I had to "prove" myself) and literally injured myself in the process. I haven't been able to play for months now and regret that so much. I think going forwards I definitely want to break that stereotype. So what if you're not perfect or don't get pieces immediately? You're already in the 1% to be able to play any and all piano works ever written. Thus I've learned to respect the process more.

It sounds extraordinary being the 2nd time you’re sight reading this piece because I can hear what it is supposed to sound like. I’m afraid my 2nd time sight reading would not sound like that-no one would really be able to tell what I’m trying to play.

You are instructive and by your huge talent you play even very difficultmusic as if it a game. NEVER feel it as a duty to your audience with these videos. They are a gift and we love them and we get to know you, but you dont get to know us. So its a gift. Thank you Tiff! The only problem though could be that people might be demanding like "where is the new Tiff video, doesn't she like us anymore" Do it only when you feel like. You are spoiling us already -

This is a sheer delight! There's something genuinely generous (and brave) about how you make these videos to share your experience and encourage others on the way to music! I also kind of love your parents are not musical, so you show us raw talent (actually not raw, it's well honed, but you know what I mean!) and your voracious appetite and desire for music (which came from... where?!), it's what music does to us! I don't play piano so well but I do sing, and I have the same feeling about singing! Thanks again! Dr M

I've noticed a lot of famous pianist play op.22 not op.54 or 31no.2 Gmajor. I too was given this music in my teen years and never discovered it's true worth.Pogorelich made a film playing it and it has many videos on youtube. I still need to really look at this music to figure out what its elements are and what itsabout. I just saw Kirill Gerstein teach Chopin 2nd onata and every bar was a revelation. Few of us pianists know how to read music or I would have seen what Chopin was getting at 30 years ago . !! Now I see the nervousness and the journey the motifs make and how and much more now why. Incredible !

Tiffany, an interesting piece that you have stumbled upon here. As you say, you are more inclined to the Romantic era as opposed to this very 'classical' sounding sonata. What drew you to this one? On the face of it, it sounds like one of the most conventional of the thirty-two: no grand gestures, no startling originalities, yet for all that it remains one the most exquisitely written of all his sonatas. Beethoven said so himself. "This Sonata is in apple pie order" (roughly translated words to that effect). It delights in subtle and unusual rhythms and accents. The slow movement is a stunner. No deep, profound depths here (circa Op 7, Op 2,no 2 and 3) Instead, a beautiful operatic aria: how often does Beethoven write like this? Are you inclined to include this one in your recitals? I hope so. And it would be a refreshing change to hear pianists of your generation programming these earlier sonatas as well as the usual Op 27 no. 2, Op 53, Op 57, and the final sonatas. Love these videos, keep 'em coming!
