Hey Jody - I hope you and your family are all well! Just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU. Bought a car project years ago and am now getting toward the end of it, but I can safely say that without the guidance and tricks on your channel there is no way I’d be this near. I’ve even done a small number of weld repairs and some fabrication for friends - never money involved, but it’s great to have a few favours in the bank! Your content is outstanding and the humility you show toward other fabricators does you massive credit too - so many people are in p!ssing contests about who’s work is the best that it’s great to see someone ready to recognise the skill of others. Especially when I would be prepared to hang a ‘professional welder’ sign outside my garage if I were even a quarter as capable as you are! If I’m ever stateside, I will find the time to come and buy you a couple of cold ones. Sorry if this sounds a bit gushy, but I can’t explain how helpful these have been over the years. Thanks again, and keep it up! Rod

Nice to see someone actually double passing chassis work. So many guys put out some beautiful looking single pass welds but leaving a lot on the table as far as safety
@timothydillon6421
@timothydillon6421 3 года назад
If a single pass weld is stronger than the base material that is all you need. More welding and a larger heat effected zone usually makes the failure point just outside of the shielding gas area. You can say my weld didn't fail but that weld may have made the tubing fail. Also all 4130 is not the same. It's the same mix but the heat and temper can change it drastically
@kevinbrisson3116
@kevinbrisson3116 3 года назад
@@timothydillon6421 with 4130 the weld or filler material is much softer typically to dilution the base material to inhibit embrittlement along with the welding style/process. Not to equal or strengthen the base material. That is done with the second pass or cap. The typical filler being ER70s-2 when welding structural 4130 in motor sports. All top fuel funny car stuff is double welded. Typically in the drag racing scene it’s single pass for the stacked dime look not integrity. As far as the HAZ I dont buy into that much at all. I believe the process of heating and slow rate of cooling is more important even if it creates a larger HAZ. Especially working around aircraft restoration years ago. Guys gas welding 4130 that looked like butt crack. Yet it passed inspection. It actually was softer when believed it would be hardened and brittle. The fact some of the aircraft was 50-60 years old and have been through a war and service stands to prove the process was correct. Yes you are correct not all materials are equal. Substantiating the need for a second pass or cap. That or switch to Docol R8 any dummy can weld that stuff.

4130 is what high-end steel bicycle frames are made of as well. Internally butted tubing no less. Thicker on the ends. The heavy stuff wall thickness is .035 at the joins. I didn't have a welding machine capable, so I fillet brazed up one bike and used lugs on the other. O/A work. I still dream of TIG!

Hi Jody, huge fan of your channel, my son and I are about to purchase our first Tig welder, what max current capability would you recommend if its for building Motorcycle frames and similar projects. The reason I ask is there is a 180 AMP that runs from regular 10 amp wall plug but the 200AMP + require 15 amp plug and that would require some mods to our electrical supply

Nice work!! I know this is a practice piece for the video and its slick. If you were welding this material as a "code" weld would you purge the inside with argon as well? We purge all stainless TIG welds on 304 stainless pipe or 316 food grade tubing to prevent carbide precipitation, aka "Sugaring" , so I was just wondering about it. I dig your channel. You would be a beast in the Pipe trades!!!!

I remember custom bike frames being built in the early 2000s, they used to say chromoly suffered fatigue fractures at the joint when using carbon steel fillers and that silicon bronze brazing was the better option for the application. What is your opinion on that idea? Also is er70-s2 not lower tensile strength than 4130? I had heard er80 is a better match? Thanks for the video as always.

Question Jody, apoligize its off topic from vid, but this is the only way I know to communicate with you. I'm on a very tight budget, and I respect your knowledge and experience. I should I say "used to be" a good welder; ua local 72, certified ua21, ua41, ua5, that was over 10 years ago. Now I want to try to start a "side hustle" and hopefully get a welding/fab business started if possible. I'm in south Louisiana and there's always repair work on small shrimp/oyster/crab boats most of aluminum, some steel hull (corten), some stainless fittings and such. Which would be better oxy-acetylene, or lincoln ac-250 tombstone to make enough to buy a better more suitable power source? I thank you in advance, God bless you sir. When you mention lack of coverage when the bottle pressure gets low it has nothing to do with the gas composition. More than likely it has to do with the volume that the orifice in the regulator can flow for the inlet pressure. This will be noticeable when the bottle pressure goes from 2,300 psi when full to only a few hundred psi when close to empty. You are correct that gas cylinders can become contaminated if someone ran the bottle to zero pressure and left the tank valve open. You will notice contaminated shielding gas when a fresh cylinder is first used, not after it is used and gets to a lower pressure.
