This video is about tig welding aluminum techniques for butt and tee joint welds.
basic settings are 100-140 amps using foot pedal so basically what that mean is at times I am at 140 amps but also much lower when heat soaks the small practice piece.
i used nearly 140 amps but when the aluminum gets soaked with heat, I used the foot pedal to use less amperage.
AC balance set to 30% cleaning, AC frequency set to 100 hz using advanced square wave. pre flow set to 1.5 sec and postflow set to 8 sec.
3/32" 2% lanthanated electrode, and 3/32" 4943 filler metal.
4943 welds a lot like 4043 but has better overall properties than 4043.
for the butt joint, I used a #6 cup with 15cfh of argon, and for the Tee joint, I used a #8 furick pro clear cup to aid with filming the arc.
I increased the flow rate to 18 cfh for the #8 cup but all other settings were same as the butt joint.

Great video as always! I recently took several weld certifications, in different processes, including various aluminium joints configurations. The Tig Finger and Tig Finger XL made the difference with the aluminum for me. I was comfortable throughout my test. The other welder in the booth beside me could not say that.

Thx I was having problems tig welding .063 sheet together, butt weld. Full penetration but lack of fusion underside, the sheet edges were still visible. Weld split open during testing. Experimented with flux on the underside and it worked very well. Destructive testing proved positive. I could not split the weld.. Some loss of visibility from the flux flare but I'll manage.

As usual, GOOD video. You make it look so easy. To prevent blow throughs at the end of sheet metal welds, I was taught to start welds in from both ends and join them in the middle of the plate. It's kinda cheating and not fancy as yours, but it works pretty good.

For "T" welds I had trouble getting a shiny puddle on both metals at the same time. Solvents didn't help. A 3" sanding pad on a battery right angle tool to roughen the edges was a game changer. Also lower gas flow helped stamp out arc wandering. Keeping the tungsten almost touching was also a game changer. Maybe a AC balance more on the penetration side would help but auto is working on my Precision 185 transformer machine. 👀

on aluminum, edge to edge, you need to make a heel. This means starting at approximately 5 cm and going towards the first end, then continuing the welding in the other direction from this first start to go towards the second end. There you are somewhat lucky to be in a fairly strong thickness, because not making a heel means taking a very big risk of having cracking on your start.

Thank you for making these videos, sir. You have definitely been the impetus for my rekindled interest in welding as a hobby. I find your presentation very interesting and easy to follow; and your camera shots are impeccable. I have been watching your catalog of videos from as far back as RU-vid will show, and look forward to all your new videos as they come out. Simply put, outstanding. I'm looking at the Esab Rebel 215ic as my first multiprocess welder. I know it's only DC; but I figure I can always run a spool gun if need be if I ever run into the need to work on aluminum. Any thoughts on this? God bless you, and continued success in your future endeavors, sir.

Hello Jody, I am trying really hard to follow all your tips and tricks on TIG welding and have gotten a little better until I bought a new Everlast 252 STi. Now I am in deep over my head and the manual just does not really help me know how to set up the settings for stainless and aluminum. Nobody has shown the AC setups for this welder and that includes your buddy Bob Moffit. Is there any future plans for you to make a video on this machine and how to use the settings for AC TIG and pulse, etc.? Oh by the way, I love the TIG finger. Since getting it I have not felt the heat while practicing with my little Everlast 141 STL.
