In this video I am going to try my hand at tig welding for the first time. I use the ESAB Rebel 285 with the tig torch and a foot pedal. Things do not go according to plan.

I've only stick welded if what I did is what you want to call stick wedding but it was for my own project and it held together for years so I say it was a success I dabbled a little more since like I said only for myself. Good job for trying to broaden your skills.

I'm in he same boat Elliot. I am learning how to TIG weld too. It's not going as well as I was hoping....The videos make it look easy.....It's not! But keep at it. We all have to start somewhere. You should practice on a thicker, flat piece of steel to start off. Try just making beads for now. The rest will come to you as you gain more experience. Good plan getting the foot pedal though. It is definitely a lot easier to use then the button on the gun is. You just need to get used to it. I look at it like the gas pedal in a car, the more you push down on it the more power you're going to get.

I like the idea of the foot pedal because it give you way more control. It’s just more to pay attention to that’s for sure

I have 20 years of experience as a tig welder in the food processing industry. Here are some tips I can give you. First, to tig weld, the fit should be AS PERFECT AS POSSIBLE. I've never seen this kind of kit before, but I can clearly see that the tabs that allows you to bend at the right place really makes a less than ideal joint to weld on thin metal especially for a newbie. Usually you only want gaps when welding thick structural steel structures or High pressure piping. When you weld sheet metal, these gaps are a big nono! 2nd: think of your pedal as a throttle pedal. If you set your machine high (let's say150 amps) which is way too hot for what you are welding, it makes it easy to "lose control" over your puddle, this is the reason you blow holes. You should always set your machine a little % of what you really need for the thickness you are welding. Starting parameter charts are available everywhere online, but use only these charts to help you "preset" your machine. Nobody welds the same, some welders may be more comfortable welding hotter, some may like colder, the PERFECT setting isn't the same for everybody! The perfect setting is the setting that makes you comfortable! 3rd: Forget these kind of projects for now. If you want to learn and not lose your mind because it's not as easy as you thought, you have to start from the beginning. What I mean by that, is, as boring as it sounds, there is a lot of reading, and theory needed even before you strike an arc!, there are several good channels on youtube to give you tips, but do not expect to be able to weld this premade kit as a beginner! You should really start simply by controling a puddle on a pretty thick piece of steel. Then you start fusion weld (no filler rod) thick steel together, all kind of different joints and positions. When you start to get comfortable, you can start adding some filler rods. Next step would be to try welding a little thinner material and so on! There is no magic trick! It takes time to be good! Don't forget, when tig welding, you always want clean material! Wiping it with acetone is a must, and if using hot rolled steel, always remove the mill scale before welding. Hope it will help!

Those are some great tips! I guess I thought there would be a little transferable skill between MIG and TIG. Boy, was I wrong! I'm going back to the drawing board and going to get myself a pile of scrap to just lay beads on and go from there. Thanks for watching!

Hi, me again. You're putting too much heat to the metal with the pedal. To tack, just start the arc then release the pedal. You are arcing too long and it will burn thru. Pedal depth with the foot dictates more heat. Use practice pieces until you acquire the "Feel." That is very thin metal and should be braised.
@EverythingElliott
@EverythingElliott 6 месяцев назад
I felt when I started the arc it wasn’t doing anything at all. Maybe my problem was just low heat but hold it in the spot to warm up for a tack rather than add heat quickly?

1.6 mm tungsten same as for filler rod on that thin sheet I would start with no gap and 30 amps or less if yours goes down lower.
@EverythingElliott
@EverythingElliott 6 месяцев назад
I think it goes down all the way to 5, I looked at it at one point and it was at 7 amps so it must. Thanks for the tip
@paulnewton943

@@EverythingElliott if you use MIG wire stick 1 end in the use and the other in the drill and twist it. That will stiffen it up to give it some body. The sheet is way to thin to learn on as well, to me it sounds like is is less than .5mm . Good luck mate

That looks like a lot of fun Elliott! Don’t be too hard on yourself. Probably like riding a bike once you get used to it it’ll eventually become second nature. I agree with one of your other commenters, that eagle you were trying to weld up was probably too thin of material. The beads you laid down looked really good for your first time! If it were easy, tig welders wouldn’t be getting paid $60 an hour🤣

Practice will hopefully make perfect. It’s a skill I’d like to get good at and make those Instagram quality welds
