Hey man! I’ve been watching your videos like crazy for the past two months to help me get my tig root down for my certification in December! I noticed you don’t have a 3g mild steel tig root video…Would you give a thought to maybe doing a video like that someday in the future??I really love the way you explain things. It’s a lot better than most other RU-vidrs, and it’s impressive that English isn’t even your first language!

Hey man I forgot to mention this but I started watching your videos like crazy back in January with the dream of becoming a pipe welder, took into action in march and in September I passed my first combo pipe test and I just wanna give you a HUUUGE thanks man, I was self taught off your RU-vid channel just learning in my garage for 6 months, and here I am almost 2 months in. I still watch your videos and keep learning with every upload but thanks again for your videos man thanks to you I learned how to weld pipe and how to put in roots hot passes and caps the slick way.

I was trying the same technique on a 5mm thick 304 stainless pressure vessel Friday, in the 2g position, 5mm gap, 3mm rod, but the top of the bevel kept falling in on me. I was running about 103 amps. Do you think my travel speed must have been too slow? Cheers m8
@pacebozeman
@pacebozeman 11 месяцев назад
Not travel speed alone. 108 is entirely too much heat for thin wall ss.
@X3MTIG
@X3MTIG 11 месяцев назад
Hey buddy, amps were too high I guess, you should try playing with amps or set up smaller gap.
@chrisplayz253
@chrisplayz253 11 месяцев назад
@@X3MTIG ah ok thanks for the reply I found some 3mm rods which I thought were perfect for a 5mm gap but did t want to go too low on the amps. Hypothetically speaking how would you have handled that situation? I had a buddy purging with a pot on the back
@skullbeard1339
@skullbeard1339 11 месяцев назад
The question was not for me, but I will answer too: in this situation, I would dock without blunting and with a wider chamfer and with minimal clearance, you can even watch the penetration from the outside without it. Just under such conditions, the current that you set would be approximately normal, well, maybe somewhere 120. And I would cook in two passes. And the additive would use 1.6 . You can also cook together, on both sides, but this requires skill, but you can cook without chamfering and gap at all)

@Jon-jk8vd
@Jon-jk8vd 6 месяцев назад
Start with 5/32 gap, start with 1/8 wire and shrinkage may require 3/32 in areas, I've also found I get better results not feathering, no need to with starts, and tieing in I find feathering causes too much suck back and get nicer tie ins without, but best practice is to feather

My biggest problem is scooting my hand back when I’m running out of wire. I can’t ever keep that wire still and connected when trying to feed it unless I hold the very end of it and never move my fingers.

I use a dry torch. No foot pedal. Do a tig root with that.
@RedRiverMud
@RedRiverMud 11 месяцев назад
I ask this question out of sheer ignorance. Why do you want to start out with a gap that then has to be filled?
@X3MTIG
@X3MTIG 11 месяцев назад
Overall, the gap in pipe welding is essential to ensure proper heat expansion, weld penetration, weld quality, and adherence to specific welding techniques. It helps in achieving a strong and reliable weld joint that meets the required standards and specifications.
