For "finished" welds, I can definitely see the advantage of using TIG over stick or MIG. You're left with a completely acceptable finished appearance without breaking out the grinder and the flap discs! Nicely done, Dan.

Dwight Rahl In one sense it saves time since the weld is essentially finished when done, that is if done correctly. Unfortunately, the prep time to get the metal clean, and the generally slower rate of welding kind of evens it out. So, unless there was a compelling reason, I would probably use MIG on square tubing. Thanks for the comment!

A well done tig weld is a thing of beauty.

I regularly weld 1x1in by .040 AL wall tube and if you put the arc right in the middle of the joint it would blow through in seconds. You always "cheat" or move the arc to the whole tube side and not the cut tube side, as it wets you add filler that would join the thin cut side to the whole tube side.

tuyen dam Excellent advice and I thank you for clarifying that. As before, I completely agree with what you said and your technique. I am glad you shared this with us all and I hope you will continue to watch the show and provide your intelligent and constructive criticism.

It would be nice to see how to TIG weld rounded corners with 90 grad tube when tubes are like a + one to each other. There is a V with smaller than 90 grad angle and it is not so easy to fill it with a filler.

Can you have "too much" shielding gas when tig welding? Like as a joke, if your friends cranked up the gas to 60 (from a norm of 15 or 20), would you even notice in the quality of the weld? Or are you simply wasting it?
@WeldFever
@WeldFever 9 лет назад
John Rambo Yes, you can have too much shielding gas. What happens if is you have too much shielding gas you create a turbulent swirling effect that actually pulls in unwanted air, which contaminates your welds. So too much can be a bad thing!

Hi, I really appreciate your videos, as there are not many good tig welding tutorials available. One question: What amperage did you run on this weld?
@WeldFever
@WeldFever 9 лет назад
David Schönenberger Thanks for the nice compliment. I probably had it around 125 amps or so, but since I use a foot pedal, it's not a constant amperage. I usually start off near full amperage(pedal) and slowly ease off as I continue through the weld as it builds heat.

Nice video Dan! What machine are you using for TIG? I see it has HF start. Any foot pedal or other amptrol device?

Rattletrap2 thank you and I am using the Miller Dynasty 200dx in this video.

Good info! I'm looking to weld tail light brackets onto the rear of my trailer. The scrap i found is 1/4" angle 4"x4". I was going to try to TIG weld it instead of stick. Do you think it's too heavy of material to TIG weld? If not, what size tungsten ans amperage would I use? Assume it's DCEN on polarity. I have a Lincoln Precision Tig 185. Do you recommend 2% Lanthanated tungstens? Thanks a bunch!

I've never welded but am very interested in Tig , as I love the finished look . Was looking at a 210 Miller , the inverter style. Any opinion on this welder . Thank you for sharing this with us , great looking work

Nice video,I'm just getting into tig welding(most of my welding is stick and mig).I have a hard time feeding the wire as I weld.Any tips on that?
@WeldFever
@WeldFever 9 лет назад
bob litchko take a piece of filler and practice feeding in your hands while watching tv. I plan on making a video about TIG tips, so stand by for it.

Hey dan I'm looking into learning to weld tig what small machine do u recommend me buying so I can have more practice at home? Something for practice nothing to pricy Thanks
@WeldFever
@WeldFever 9 лет назад
Rodolfo Guzman I wish I could recommend one, but I have never used a smaller, less expensive tig machine. Frankly, most TIG machines, even the imports, are pricey. So I wish you good luck in your search and hope you'll tell us what you chose and let us know how it worked out.

Nice presentation, but the way you welded this thick tube is nothing at all like one would weld thin tube. You have to do more than just image it's thinner you actually change your technique. If you didn't you would keep on getting melt back on the cut tube side.

tuyen dam You bring up a very good point and I completely agree with you. I will keep that in mind the next time I simulate something. Thanks for your insightful comment!
