yes but mostly after several "darn -- closer, cloooser" "ok, now you dipped it, that was tooo close, use smthg between touching and standing on a ladder" :) i think i lost most of my tungsten by "clipping and grinding" lol.

Hey Jody; Tom Fraser I have been a subscriber of your for many years now. I really appreciate all of the things you do for the welding public. I have a question; I have been a welder for the past 61 years. About 3 years ago I had a stroke. This disabled my filler rod hand for Tig welding. What is your thought on using a CK Worldwide WF-5? I love Tig welding. Could you do a segment on using one of these units for the handicap? Thanks Jody.

I have a suggestion for a welding video. You always advocate cleaner is better (i agree completely) i'm curious if you can demonstrate whether there is a difference based on surface finish. Welding course ground or band saw cut pieces vs, filed or sanded smooth pieces? Does polishing or smoothing the surface finish improve weld quality? Does it hurt quality? Will my welds improve if i use a 240 grit flap disk or is a 30 grit better? I would be curious to see the effects on steel, stainless, and aluminum.
@dougankrum3328

flap disc...be careful you don't introduce bits of abrasive into the aluminum....Walter and a couple others make abrasive wheels/discs just for aluminum...

I've never used them...but the new lanthanated electrodes keep their tip better than pure tungsten....and there's a newer 4000 series Tig electrode that Jody uses... clamp your 'work'...or....'ground'.... electrode right onto the aluminum...this is a little thin for aluminum, tricky...good luck...

What filler rods n tungsten you us on that steel lap joint? On my tig welder I have a dial for amps and post flow....very basic. But I don't think I understand the digital current reading. It doesn't change when I strike arcs, but only increases as I increase amperage. So if I set amps at 120...my current reading would be like 100 I believe. What does current reading tell me? they tested me on 3/16 Al to see how good my penetration was for a T joint but I cheated and made two passes the first was a fusion pass as slow and as hot as I could get and then finished it by a nice easy pretty looking filler pass that makes you think it is too good looking to have proper penetration but when they hammered the plates open and found more than 50% penetration (they never seen that before) they were ecstatic and called the specialist to see it, ended up hiring me on the spot with the wage I wanted higher than they were offering hahahahaha

I think everyone has this same problem at first. I would advise to take things one step at a time and get comfortable with each step before you move on to the next. Something like this… Run beads without filler rod on clean carbon steel...Try to hold an arc length equal to the diameter of your electrode. Once you are very comfortable and steady, run beads on steel using filler rod Then do the same thing on aluminum if your machine is AC DC. Then pad beads on aluminum. If you are still dipping the tungsten , experiment with slightly longer arc length. I have a beginner tig course at welderskills.com that walks you thru these steps with videos but the first few steps are pretty much what I just listed. Good luck
