Tiger Cub Swim Test 

Its a damn tiger!! People are reacting like they just threw in a 2 week old kitten into the water. Its supposed to know how to swim for survival. And to those people complaining about it being cold, some tigers live in the Russian Tundra so a little cold water isnt gonna hurt them

For those of you freaking out, look up what happened at the London Zoo recently with a cub. Very tragic. Once you read that sad story, I think you will see the importance of this swim test.

The point of the test is to ensure they will survive in the event of a sudden, accidental fall into the water. They need to demonstrate the ability to immediately react and get themselves to safety despite the shock of an unexpected dunk.

Calm down. They have to make sure they can keep their heads above water without a trainer's help in case they fall in without someone noticing immediately.

Tigers are naturally ok with water. They were doing a test to make sure the cubs wouldn't drown if left alone. Not cruel. I care very much about the right of tigers and the need to preserve them, and obviously no zoo situation is ideal, but it is very important to have tiger breeding programs like the one at the Smithsonian Zoo, with the hope of reintroducing them into the wild. The problem is people who try to keep tigers as pets in their backyard, or use them for photo ops and then keep them caged for the rest of their lives.

This is a crucial test, and I'm glad to see it being performed. It may seem cruel, but the reality is that water features with steep, smooth sides, like swimming pools (unlike gently-sloping, sandy beach-entry, 'ponds') can be very dangerous for animals. If they fall in and they can get out before they tire, they can drown if no one is there to rescue them. It's a once in a lifetime critical test to determine how dangerous the pool is for the animal, so some temporary discomfort is well worth it, as it can save the animal's life. As an aside, pool covers can be extremely dangerous should an animal or a human fall in and become disoriented under them.

People who are posting on here that what they are doing is cruel. I suppose it would be better to let the cubs into the exhibit without knowing if they are able to get out of the moat if they happened to accidentally fall in? So its cruel to test and make sure that they are going to be safe if something happens and they fall into the water.? They got wet. They will survive. I suppose you think animals never accidentally fall in the water in the wild.

i love that you give them swim tests. i remember the lion cubs. BUT in this one, pretty shitty of the guy to just throw the male in there. i expect better treatment from National Zoo employees. At least the girl was gently put in.

I'm disliking not cuz he trow the tiger in the water that is fine with me, but because i don't think is ok to have wild animal locked in artificial environments, unless they are trying to save some specie from extinction that we human caused in first place. I would rather don't see an animal than see him caged. What i do like is to see documentaries about wild animals in their natural environment.

Calm your freaking tits guys. In the wild, they face much greater challenges . Also tigers are going extinct, their species are dying out.the animal is fine, it's not like he threw it off a cliff into the pool. The keeper just did it gently enough so the the cub won't get hurt.

I get it, the tigers must be taught how to swim for safety, but they look stressed. And they felt betrayed being thrown into the water. That tiger will have trust issues later. They should let the handlers who have strong bonds to the cubs do the swimming lesson to the cubs slowly while with them in the water. These folks look like just there for the publicity.

I think it would be better to walk into the water with the cub... then set her down rather than toss it in. It seems a tad more humane.

Ok so I admit my heart ached when I saw the man just toss that cub into the water, but I'm glad Thier doing this for the sake of the cubs future safety. & to all the animal overs out there like me. I know a lot of u r freaking out, & probabley upset, but Please don't think too harshly on the employers. They really ARE doing this for a good the cubs own good. It's true if they were in the wild, they probabley wouldn't gently fall into water, they'd probabley freak the fuck out, & (unlike ALOT of house cats tigers are one of the few who CAN swim & have an instinct to do so ) run out like these two.

Really? This is all wrong. The throwing in is slightly understandable but the fact that they were chasing the poor baby boy tiger with nets is horrible! You just threw him in water (probably cold water) his face was submerged and people were yelling and screaming he's scared so you chase him with nets!

Yes they need to swim but also the first one could have been handled better and you know not tossed in. As a whole it is rare for them to go into water but they need to have some concept of swimming or else they will drown just like any other animal or human who doesn't know what swimming is.
