Handheld games which offer brief moments of distraction, but did you know that Tiger actually made deluxe versions of these games in tabletop format. The outcome is, as you'd expect, ridiculous and absurd, so I felt like it was time to look a the 3 main culprits. Afterburner, Outrun and Batman.

When I was a kid, I got an After Burner 'table top' game from somewhere, and I liked it more without the batteries, as an imaginary fighter jet cockpit. The game was horrible.

There were a lot of toys like that in the 70s and 80s... and since you only got a couple of presents each year, you made do with what you had. Which means when some aunt blew a bunch of money on a really shitty present, you pretended they did good... even if they got you something they had seen you playing with in previous years and you had outgrown already, yet they got you another one. :P Or when your parents got you that "programmable" robot dump truck that would have been awesome to have in 2nd grade... as a gift when you were in 5th grade and had been coding for years already, so the "computer" in the dump truck was pathetic and nearly unusable. Therefore you pretended it wasn't a toy you had asked for years earlier... ignoring the requests you had made _this_ calendar year, or even the previous one. Sometimes you just had to pretend you liked what you got, or you were in deep shit. A big imagination goes well with such an unfun scenario to be in.

I got the Outrun tabletop for my 10th birthday in August 1991. I can still taste the disappointment now. I remember waking up at around 4 am and sneaking downstairs with my brother to open it up and play it, then trying hard over the next week or so to convince myself it was good. My other present that year was Making Michael Jackson's Thriller on VHS, this is all seared onto my memory.

In the US during the 90's there was a magazine called "Penny Power" later renamed "Zillions" that reviewed toys the same way the parent company Consumer Reports reviewed home appliances and cars. The After Burner game was highlighted for being a stellar example of packaging over functionality, noting the discrepancy between the size of the device itself and the tiny LCD screen. I assume there were significant cost factors involved due to economies of scale, but for the tabletop sized games Tiger should have at least had a bigger screen than on the handheld version.
@TanjoGalbi

I'd love to convert the Outrun one to use a proper full colour screen, give it analogue steering and then customise a Raspberry Pi or something to run a port of the arcade version of the game. Would be cool in that case. :)

When i was 8 and learning basic DC electrical circuits, i built a bigger wooden case for a tennis handheld game. I wired two pushbuttons. With better controls i could achieve better scores. Also attached a speaker where the piezo was and got louder sounds. This kind of mods made me happy and proud back in the days.

(9:30) I once bought the handle end of a _Flying Fighters_ toy at a Goodwill store, and had more fun with that. For those unfamiliar, it was essentially a plastic fighter jet, with a handle on the rear: the handle, designed to look like a flight stick, contained the batteries, a speaker that would produce a engine sound that changed depending upon how you moved the unit, and button that rocked left or right for gun or missile sounds.

I was not impressed with that piece of junk. MAN I wanted these so bad as a kid in the early/mid 90s, between the ages of probably 4-7. I thought they were the coolest things ever! Never did own one though. I DID have some kind of steering wheel & gear shift combo toy thing that didn't have any sort of display, but it had alot of realistic bells and whistles on it, and I ALWAYS had to have it when I was riding in the car, so i could turn the wheel and drive along with my mom n dad lol. The more stickers and nonsense details, the BETTER in my mind back then. I wouldn't have cared about the game quality, admiring all of the buttons and switches on the stickers would have kept me occupied for quite some time. Things were so simple back then. Wish I still had that imagination! Everyone's ideas with replacing the screen and installing a raspberry-pi &arduino for the buttons and switches - ID BUY THAT!

Funny enough, I actually have a bow hunting Tiger game, that was also complete crap, and loud(not the speakers, but the actual bow mechanism)

Ah 1989, I remember me mum coming home with the Amiga 500 Batman pack. Silly cow, I sent her packing and to not dare come back home from Argos without a Grandstand Batman LCD game instead.

These toys were the ultimate let down, don't know how they weren't charged with fraud or something. I remember them vividly, and the contempt I felt for them, thinking as a kid, what a waste, couldn't even use them for something else, all the effort and material put into them, would have had a better experience with a plain toy car or an unplugged joystick or steering wheel.

That batmobile is looking like something to get mom's mind racing, moreso than any child's. Lol.

could you do a video on the tiger electronics mech warrior game/figure? I can't find a video on it for the life of me but it seems kinda cool and if I could finally find a job in the little town I now live in, Id like to save up some money to get a hold of one to dink around with and to live half the time on my shelf

I envy you having all of those in the boxes minus After Burner. Which is funny, that is the only one of the 3 I have and it is the Tiger version boxed. lol I didn't even know they made a Batman one. I have always wanted the Out Run version. I can also see that Out Run is similar to Hang-On and the Batman is similar to Super Sprint on the Tiger handhelds.

Update: Just recently I acquired an Out Run Tiger version in the box. I got it for a good price on Ebay. Unfortunately the sound doesn't work, but thanks to this video. I can figure out where the wires go. And solder them, so the sound will work again. There was some corrosion in the battery terminals. Which I eliminated a lot with white distilled vinegar and rubbing alcohol. With all that said. I am still looking for the Batman tabletop and the Tank Attack as well. Well the OutRun is all fixed thanks to your video! And I actually found a Tank Attack complete in box that needs repaired. Some people may think these games are kind of stupid and pointless. But collectors like me that grew up on the Tiger handhelds are happy to have them in their collection! lol

The real appeal of these things to kids was not that they were fun to play, but that they were really big. That's why we all wanted things like Power Wheels and that G.I. Joe aircraft carrier playset that was the size of a small coffee table back then, so you could invite your friends over and rub it into their faces that you got bigger toys than them and no you can't have a turn on it, mom got it for me and said only I'm allowed to use it so too bad.

I think it would be interesting to cover Tiger & Tomy's history. The first I can remember was one of those tiny fishtanks where you squeeze a button to get hoops to land on polls. I wonder if those who grew up with tablet and smartphone game's will have the same nostalgia as physical toys.🤔

Very impressive oldies, ever the original box, enjoyed the view. I collected some of the Entex handhelds, some still work.

One has to admire the talent to sound so plastic about plastic. Regardless, while still not remember who I knew who had one, I was well content with the Outrun one. Probably because it 1. looked way cool, 2. I could easily delude myself 3. Car. Don't need explanation. Sure It might have come down to a bit of someone else's house excitement too.

These 80s mechanical racing cockpits look way cooler than the LCD one.

Some of my friends had these growing up. They never had batteries in them so we just used them for toys instead
