Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters by 12 shots, the 2000 US Open by 15 shots , and the 2000 British Open by 8 shots. At one point in 2001 he held all 4 major championship trophies at once. Tiger Woods has won 23% of the professional golf tournaments in which he has entered. He has 81 PGA tour victories, 3 U.S. Junior amateurs, 3 United States amateurs, and 15 major championships. He spent 281 consecutive weeks as the number 1 player in the world and a total of 683 weeks as the number 1 player in the world. All of this in the context of the deepest and most talented fields that have ever played professional golf. He is absolutely the greatest golfer to have ever lived!!

@@Blazen1212 I agree - while Jack was very talented in his day, he had a field of competition that was miniscule by comparison. However, in all fairness, the equipment of today is different than the equipment 40 years ago...while you can say that "the entire field has access today to the same equipment and Tiger still decimated them with huge leads", I would like to see today's players use the same persimmon woods and clubs that Jack had to use. :)

@@Blazen1212 I agree and there are a couple stats that you didn't mention that are just as amazing in my opinion. At one point, he made 142 consecutive cuts. He only played 19 or 20 tournaments a year during that period. So basically he never had an off week for 7 years which would include 28 majors cuts in a row during that stretch alone. From 2002 - 2005 he had 1540 putts 3 feet or less. He only missed 3 of them. I miss that many 3 footers every round. LOL

You do have to keep in mind that more than 20 of the players that ran second to him only ever won one or no PGA tour events. Michael Campell only had one (2005 US open when he beat Tiger). 38 of them had less than 5 PGA tour wins The quality of opposition that Tiger faced in his dominant years were below par compared to Jacks era.

Crushofsiel, …. Tiger won the 1997 Masters by 12 strokes, yet he only shot 1 stroke lower than Jack when he won the 1965 Masters by 9 strokes. A HUGE Margin for that era. The Augusta course played LONGER in 1965 Masters than it did in 1997. …. Go back and look at the that 1997 Masters win. There was "48" year old journeyman Golfer Tom Kite finished in 2nd place, and 35 year old unknown Peter Tolles finished 3rd with "48" year old Tom Watson in 4th. None of your 22 to 35 year old Super Stars, ( if there was such a thing ), showed up on the radar. Phil? He MC'd. Ernie and Vijay? They finished dead even at 288. Paul Stankowski, David Duval, and Justin Leonard, ( Remember them? ) they finished at 284, 285. … That's so typical of Tigers competition. He beat more 1 hit wonders.

Jack is the GOAT. Tiger had the greatest decade of any golfer. From 1997 to 2008 Tiger won 14 major championships but then he did not win another major until the 2019 Masters. He practically disappeared from major championship golf for a decade during his prime years. Jack's record in the major championships is a great accomplishment. He won all four majors after the age of 38 years of age. He won three majors after the age of 40. He finished second three times after the age of 40 in majors, in the 81 Masters to Tom Watson. The 82 U.S. Open again to Watson and the 83 PGA Championship to Hal Sutton. Jack was consistent for three decades of Major Championship golf and over the years he competed against a collection of golf's greatest players. To me, some of Jack's greatest golfing moments were the times he lost. Epic matches with great players. How many times did Jack finish 2nd in a Major to Watson, Trevino, and Palmer? Great player's careers were defined by their ability to beat Jack Nicklaus. Tiger never had that defining moment with another great player of his generation in a Major Championship. Maybe it is not Tiger's fault that he entered golf when the great players of the time were in decline. Norman, Faldo, Ballesteros, and Stewart. Tiger entered golf when the field was weak of men who knew how to compete and win a major championship. However, Jack immediately had to compete against Player, Palmer, Casper, all major champions in their prime. If a player's career is defined in the major championships. Jack Nicklaus is the greatest of all time.

Not how many Majors or overall tournament wins. It’s too hard to pick one player over another player when they’re not in the safe era. That’s why you can really just say who would you pick to make one putt to save your life? Not theirs but yours. That’s why he’s even above Jordan. Tiger never faced a player the caliber of Watson in his prime in the final round of a major. Tiger never faced a player the caliber of Palmer in a playoff, for his first PGA win, at the US open. Jack was just mentally stronger. Not that Tiger is Greg Norman, I'm certainly not saying that. Tiger's time may not be over yet. Watson should have won the open at 59 years old, if not for one approach shot that he hit with the wrong club. Lets break this down: *Driving/Fairway woods - Nicklaus. I Have to give this to Jack, just as long relative to his opponents in his heyday but probably a little straighter. Both had/have the power to hit super high or low at will. *Long irons - Tie. Nicklaus was famous for his towering long irons, Tiger for his super accurate 'Stinger' *Medium Irons - Tie. Both had the control over the ball where they could move the ball into the pin with a fade or draw at will, not much to choose here, both are awesome mid iron players. *Short Irons - Woods. No contest here Tiger is right up there with the best short iron players of all time, his control of trajectory and spin and therefore distance control is second to none. *Short game - Woods. At his best Tiger's short game is the best ever seen, the stats back this up too. By his own admission Nicklaus never really was amazing around the greens. *Putting - Tie. Nothing to choose between them here, both amazing clutch putters, both great technically. *Mindset - Tie. Both Tiger and Nicklaus had that aura where those around then found ways to lose while they remained as solid as a rock. You think Tiger has lost that now? Maybe not - witness the last nine holes at The Masters.... Both were super intelligent out on the course knowing when to stay safe and stay in the hunt when others got distracted by a dangerous flag. *Conclusion - I don't think there is much doubt that across most sports the general standard is higher now than at any point in the past. There is so much competition now and although there have been great champions in Nicklaus' era there are many more 'complete' players now with the physical and mental skills to compete and contend in every tournament they play in. The game has changed massively from when Tiger won his first major and his most recent. He now has to compete with and beat an entire generation of players who have grown up and taken inspiration from his athletic approach to the game. The fact that he can still compete and beat them even after his injuries, surgeries and other issues speaks volumes. I have to give the nod to Tiger

And I disagree with your Mindset assessment. Tiger has way more killer instinct than Jack. Stronger and more determined "Mindset" goes to Tiger hands down. Tiger PGA wins (67/261) = 25.67% Jack PGA wins (55/422) = 13.03% Tiger Majors (15/84) = 17.86% Jack Majors (18/164) = 10.98% Tiger Total (82/345) = 23.77% Jack Total (73/586) = 12.46% So let's just be real here, Jack's number of wins are inflated due to competing in significantly more majors (80 more than Tiger). Obviously to be fair, these stats are including a bunch of years where Jack was old and not winning and really had no business even playing. But that doesn't change the fact Jack has 9 less PGA wins yet played 241 more PGA events than Tiger. Also even Jack has admitted that the field during Tiger's career is probably about 3 times more competitive than when he played (3 times the amount of players being legitimate threats to win tournaments compared to when he played). I mean it's pretty clear Tiger is better. It's ridiculous how much those 3 more major victories are seen as the determinant of who's the goat, ignoring the fact jack has played in 80 more majors than tiger, haha. Also people seem to really look past regular pga wins. Believe it or not, they're still tournaments with the best golfers in the world playing that are all trying to win. So grand total, Tiger has won 9 more pga events (including majors) in 241 less events than Jack...🤔 If you go by who was best in their prime that's also clearly Tiger. I'm not going to bother putting up stats because that's just common golf knowledge. So Jack has much less impressive winning statistics while having played against inferior competition (Which like I mentioned, even Jack admits). It's laughable how some people actually think Jack is better than Tiger. I'd love Golf broadcasts to show this when they show the career major winner all time leader board. Might make people think a little bit: *Wins* Starts Years ------------------------------ Nicklaus *18* 164 (1968-2005) Woods *15* 84 (1996-2019) Hagen *11* 54 (1912-1941)

If you watch some of the old Gulf Wide World of Golf matches where Nicklaus was playing where they tell you how far the drives are hit, on the holes where being long was a big advantage (i.e. the par 5's) Nicklaus would hit it out over 290...with the old crappy wooden drivers with metal shafts and the old mushy balata ball. Just using the new balls he would have gained 30+ yds and probably the same with a new club, so in today's world Jack in his prime would be hitting his drives 340 or 350.

People claim that Tiger had weaker competition than Jack. This is not true. The reason it looks like Tiger had weaker competition is because Tiger was incredibly dominant. This is a man who won four majors in a row. He won more than 25% of all the tournaments he started in. Jack only won about 13%. When Tiger was gone, golf became more competitive and "no names" started winning majors. Here's an analogy: Imagine a cluster of asteroids in space, one far larger than the others. The massive asteroid will attract far more space debris. Remove the larger object, and the space debris will be spread more evenly among the smaller objects. Now, the collection of space debris appears to be "more competitive". Also, Let's not forget that Jack played in the 60s and 70s. Golf wasn't exactly open and accessible to everyone back then, now was it? Look somebody had to say it. Jack started playing at country clubs in the 50s. Could black kids play at those country clubs? Asians? Hispanics? No, no, and no. Jack was the best among the rich white golfers who were allowed to play. Tiger has faced competition from multiple continents. He is the best in the world. Big difference.

I have to say Jack was best ever. The equipment and ball has changed so much over the years making this really an unfair question. If Tiger used the same ball and clubs Jack used to conquer his peers, Tiger wouldn't have won as many majors and tournaments as Jack. Now, if Jack was using the equipment and ball Tiger has used, Jack may have won more.
@ddespair

Jim Aldridge well, the fact is the competition and playing field has become a lot deeper since Jack played. These golfers are tremendous athletes and there are more people playing golf now. The ball, the club, they might give you a minuscule edge but when you’re facing a field where everyone has that tech, it evens out. Jack was great for his day but he didn’t golf against the competition Tiger is golfing against. The initiative to make golf accessible didn’t even start until the 70’s. Golf was less diverse in its talent pool and less people were participating. Jack was great for his time, but Tiger has won against a larger and more talented playing field and he still has a grand slam. If you gave prime Jack and prime Tiger the same set of clubs, I doubt Jack could hang on a Tiger-proofed Masters golf course against the field Tiger played against.

Woa! Craig I ain't gonna contend with your observation because you reveal you were a spectator of the Jack Nicolaus era. I was just a little kid becoming a teen and couldn't have cared less for what I viewed as an old fuddy duddy sport- and I would even argue that it wasnt a sport due to its lack of high octane performance when compared to football, or basketball. But now I'm getting to be a fuddy duddy. I witnessed the Tiger Woods armature period and how he transferred in the pro era. I never gave up on this guy. And to me Woods, like Jack, is a freak of nature. I dare say- he didnt recreate the sport- he introduced it to the world. Nonetheless- Nicolaus' legacy and what he contributed to golf cannot be overshadowed nor downplayed nor dismissed in what he did for pro golf. EVER. Even if Tiger surpasses JN, not even he himself would dare down play what Jack has done. So from me- Jack or Tiger? I. DO. NOT. KNOW. But you saw both. So I have to respect your opinion. Keith Bell it is so hard to compare across eras. Times change, equipment improves, sport medicine advances, and courses change, and more young people get good quicker so “maybe” the field is stronger (“maybe”). It really is a question where the quest for some defendable “truth” can have no definitive answer. But if we are just having fun with the question...wrapped up in the enthusiasm of what we just saw...realizing that my vote really means nothing... Then my “sense” is to vote Tiger...or say nothing at all...and where is the fun in that? Too bad the universe cannot be reconfigured to allow the best Jack to compete against the best Tiger. I'll give you the fact that Jack is the GOAT...for now...but *if* Tiger just ties Jack @ 18 Majors, my vote for G.O.A.T. will go to Tiger.. For as great as Jack was and all his 2nd place finishes, the *Tiger Slam* trumps those w/out question! His total tournaments won will also be a *major record* that will NEVER get broken! His scoring average over unquestionable harder courses, even with the better technology (Balls, Irons, Woods...still gotta put the ball in the fairway and no $500 dollar driver guarantees that!) is better! His impact on the *game of golf* is much larger than Jack's! I mean, Tiger Mania created MORE MILLIONAIRES on the PGA since he turned pro! Imagine this....Curtis Strange was the first golfer to earn over $1M in a single year back in 1988..fast forward less than a decade later, Tiger tops the money list with over $2Million, but there are also 17 other golfers who had also earned over $1M in prize money..when the most before that had been just 9 golfers at the end of the year (1996) Granted, Tim Finchem did help negotiate three TV deals, but those were AFTER Tiger Woods not only turned pro but AFTER he had already won his 1st Masters but also after having a few MAJORS under his belt (TV Deals in 97', 01' & 05'), so while Tim gets *some credit* , it was still *Tiger Himself* who helped fellow tour players make more money! Of course the body of opinion will be behind Tiger Woods because of the time frame,he is still playing whereas most of those commenting here will never have seen Nicklaus or more importantly for the sake of discussion,Ben Hogan. Hogan's was undoubtebly the greatest comeback in golf after the head-on collision with a bus that nearly killed him in 1949 to recover and go on to win three majors in 1953,arguably he would have won all four had the date of the PGA Championship not been switched to conflict with the Open at Carnoustie. Tiger has had the benefit of massive publicity over the years,not all of it for his golfing prowess but that has helped to put him in the public eye so that anyone not remotely interested in golf would probably respond 'Tiger Woods' if asked to name a famous golfer. Comparisons are not only odious but impossible to make given the enormous differences in equipment,health and golf courses between the generations and anyone really interested should watch Ben Hogan vs Sam Snead at the Houston C.C. or Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson at Turnberry in 1977 for some idea of how good those guys were.

But that doesn't change the fact Jack has 9 less PGA wins yet played 161 more PGA events than Tiger. Also even Jack has admitted that the field during Tiger's career is probably about 3 times more competitive than when he played (3 times the amount of players being legitimate threats to win tournaments compared to when he played) . For example if I mean it's pretty clear Tiger is better.

DMT, I agree that Tiger is superior, but not by the large margin you claim. You have 60+ majors in your calculation when Jack played as a ceremonial golfer in his late 40's, 50's and 60's. .If you compare "active" careers, their record in majors is quite close.

I think if Tiger hadn't had all his injuries and other health issues, he'd have gotten to 18 or more by now. But yeah the stats and eye test are in favor of tiger. There is no definitive way of deciding who is “greater”. If you mean who played the best golf then tiger did. That can’t be disputed. Between 2000 and 2002 and indeed for much of the decade tiger was untouchable and no Jack Nicklaus of any time would’ve beaten him nor would anyone else. However in terms of longevity and overall record in majors Nicklaus was the best for longer. A lot longer in fact. The ifs and buts are not a factor but injuries and personal Issues prevented tiger winning a lot more and Nicklaus was probably more clever in that he didn’t play as much as tiger outside of the majors which meant he didn’t pick up injuries the way tiger did and which is probably the only reason he didn’t go past Sam Snead in pga tour wins. Overall Nicklaus for me is number 1 with tiger number 2 but that’s just one opinion.

Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer there has ever been. As of today the only thing that Jack has over Tiger is 18 major wins. That's it. Tiger has all the rest and then some. Today Tiger is one win away from tying having the most tournament wins (Tiger over Jack by 8). Tiger has held all four major titles at one time (he won all four in a row). Certainly the term 'Tiger Proofing' deals with attemps to change the game/course against Tiger's ability. That never happedned to Jack.

Jack has one other thing tiger never had or will ever have...CLASS. Also, golf courses including the majors began to increase difficulty during the late 60s why because of Jack. Those of you that are too young never saw Jack play and do not have a clue how long he was. Here is a little insight, during the PGA in the 60s, a long driving contest was held. Jack had to be talked into competing, using a persimmon driver & a 3 piece wound ball he hit it 341 yds. The record held until metal drivers & the modern ball was used years later. The question of who is better is a foolish one. Jack was greatest in the century, it remains to seen if tiger holds that title this century. And tiger has to exceed Jack's wins in the majors to even be considered as the greatest.
@johnnybgood7442
@johnnybgood7442 5 лет назад
@Tom Foster not sure what class has to do with skill level. But im sorry, Tiger's wedge game is sooo far ahead of Jack's, it doesn't belong in the conversation. Jack's saving grace was that he played on soft, slow greens relative to today. And those bad wedge shots he hit would end up 20ft away. (He would make the putts too) Well those bad wedges today end up off the green in which he'd have to hit another wedge. Clearly a huge deficiency. Jack with 18 has a claim for a better CAREER (arguable) but if we're talking better PLAYER its Tiger.

@@johnnybgood7442 did u ever see Jack play ? I've seen Jack & tiger play, they r both highly skilled players. Jack hit the ball extremely high, much higher than tiger. As for soft greens, today greens on tour r like throwing darts. In Jack's era they were very firm especially u.s. open greens. Jack hit the ball long & in the fairway, then he hit more greens than not, his short came was good enough. We can debate which of the skill level of each player, all have strengths & weaknesses. As I stated earlier Jack was the greatest golfer in the last century, tiger may be the best this century but u or I will not live long enough to find out... until tiger beats Jack's 18 wins, 19 seconds, the major list continues, etc. Tiger can never be the greatest ever.

Jack's a living legend... Tigers the Man, if Tiger can get 4 more majors he'll have the record, Jack won the Masters at 46, Tiger has needed extensive surgeries by the age of 40. You can't compare these 2 giants of the game, Tiger in his prime in Jack's day? Jack in his prime in Tigers day? it's just unfathomable plus you've got the technology of each era. You can't compare F1 Champions of today to that of the 50s...for plenty of reasons. ...Jack is a Family Man 1st, Golfer 2nd, Tiger let his mind do the talking on the course, pity something else did the talking off it. But I'll give my vote to Jack because his legacy has stood the test of time and by the looks of it Jack's record will never be broken any time soon and i dont think Tiger will ever reach or overtake it let alone anyone else... That makes no sense. Are you seriously hailing Jack as great for losing more times than Tiger? Second place is the first place loser. The only metric by which Jack leads is majors .. and even that is by THREE(3) wins. What you write is disingenuous simply because Tiger doesn't have to surpass Jack in every aspect to be the greatest. He's surpassed in in every other way that counts except major wins. And then you go on to say that Tiger has win at 46??? Those are details, not accomplishments. Tiger is right up there with Snead and Nicholas and in position to surpass both. And the competition of Tiger's era is much more competitive than in Jack's era. In all sports, athletes become stronger and faster as time goes on due to improved training methods and technology. Jack was great. Tiger is the greatest as determined by FEATS AND WINS.

Totally different game with that type of equipment. Yes most all sports/ athletes will get better over the years due to training and equipment so you can’t really compare apples to apples with athletes from different times. Tiger from 1999 to 2008 had a decade of dominance like no other.

Tiger played in a weak era. No one to mention from '97 to '08. There is a lot of competition now, but Jack dominated the Big 3 era. It's like Federer dominating in the era of the Big Four, in which he is the really big player.

Well. Only one measuring stick... Tiger vs. Jack. On the worlds largest stage and measuring stick. Nicklaus: 18 Major victories: 19 Runner-ups in majors: 3rd in nine majors. Woods: 15 Major Victories: 6 Runner -ups in majors: 3rd place?Questions any one: Also , Nicklaus did this in a time where his competition had 27 majors between them, Tiger 9.

It is a no contest. Nicklaus' record in the majors is unbeatable. Just look at the number of second places in majors. Plus he was just a great statesman for the game.

Tiger Woods has done many things in golf that Jack hasn't. But the modern game is so different than it was 40 or 50 years ago. The technology today is unbelievable in comparison to Jack's era. Today a golfer has the caddie lining up putts, (expaining options from the fairway or rough)there are endless videos of golf instruction, the equipment etc., is stunning. Back when Jack played The caddie carried the bag and handed the golf the club the golfer asked for, and very little in comparison to today was shown on TV. Fans were lucky to see the last four or five holes of the 3rd and 4th round of a tournament. There was no Golf Channel. Nowadays a golfer playing in the late afternoon can watch a great deal of what is going on on the course from the early players (during any round). Also, today golfers work out much more than they used to. When Tiger won his first 14 majors he had less serious competition than Jack. Who did he have to worry about? Mickelson, Els and an aging Nick Faldo and an aging Tom Watson? On the other hand Jack had Palmer, Player, Trevino, Casper, Jacklin, Miller, Ballesteros, Watson, and others who were all really great golfers to compete against. There was no WGC events where every golfer in the 'limited' field 'several times each year' makes the cut. Jack did not have fans moving big boulders in the rough so that he could hit his ball (and win the tournament). He didn't have fans throwing his errant tee shot out from in the bushes as Tiger did when he beat Bob May in a playoff to win the PGA. But Jack rarely lapped the field the way Tiger has. Jack played a rather conservative game (and sometimes it cost him). Once Jack got two or three strokes ahead he would play middle of the fairway / middle of the green. On the other hand, Tiger 'never' considered himself out of a tournament, and when he took the lead he just wanted to increase that lead until he dropped the last putt. Jack was more of a family man his whole career; Tiger not as much. Jack took a great deal of each year off to be with his family. Still, Tiger has proven himself in so many ways. Pro golf today is a 'worldwide game'. True, Jack had to play against the best in the world but in reality there were not as many foreign golfers competing against him as during Tiger's modern era. Even though Jack has won 18 majors and finished second in 19 other majors I think when all is said and done Tiger Woods will be considered far and away the greatest to ever play the game. Let's not forget that Tiger won 3 US junior amateur championships and followed that up with 3 US amateur champions. The real icing on the ake for Tiger will be when he wins the most senior tournaments and the most senior majors!

Jack Nicklaus is still the best until tiger woods breaks his majors record. Tiger woods winning The masters championship is a good sign for tiger. I hope tiger woods breaks the record. I am so lucky to have seen him play though the years.

For those of you who are saying that Jack had tougher competition, think about what you're saying. In the time since Jack was in his prime here are just a few things that have happened. Players have become far more focused on fitness and the athleticism required to play at a top level, so players have gotten stronger and more flexible. Technology has revealed far more about the golf swing than was known in Jack's day. The game of golf has become truly global. There are now professional tours all over the world that did not exist in Jack's day, so there are thousands more professionals than there once were. But even with just those few factors, golf is somehow the one sport in the last 50 years that has players that have gotten worse... Really? Does that even make sense to you?

Is this really even a debate anymore? Sure Jack had the 18 majors. Tiger now has 15 and 81 victories.. just one shy of tying Snead's record. And I'm sure some of the tournaments Tiger has won consists of fields equivalent to a major. The win % lets you know who the GOAT IS. Tiger has basically won 1/3 of the tournaments he's played. Tiger is nearly -200 in his major victories. Jack less than -90. They had to "Tiger PROOF" course. Never heard of them "Jack proofing". The way Tiger just made other players look foolish let's you know who the true GOAT is.
