This video is intended to be a backgrounder for subsequent future videos in this channel that will teach the Tigrayan language, which is spoken in Tigray and other parts of the world including by expatriate communities in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Ethiopia.
Tigray is the cradle of African civilization and has been at the cross roads of ancient civilizations and the Abrahamic religions. It is the only civilization in the world that embraced all the three major religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam early on. Unique in Africa, Tigray kept its independence for millennia and developed its unique writing system still in use today.
Here are some great videos by others that provide more information on the history and culture of Tigray particularly of its most famous kingdom, Axum (a.k.a. Aksum). As you watch the materials below, please note that many people traditionally but wrongly associate Tigrayan history with Ethiopian history. However, given the ongoing #TigrayGenocide, this may come to an end because Ethiopia is an empire of nations and has no history especially in the classical antiquities without Tigray, which happens to be the core state in the empire of unwilling nations collectively called Ethiopia.
