Remember those layoffs in the tech industry from January? KPBS border reporter Gustavo Solis says the pandemic has created a bit of a tech boom in Mexico.
Anyone who knew the history of the tech industry could see this was coming. Any job that can be done by an American engineer working remotely in Tahoe or Miami or wherever can eventually be done almost as well, and a lot cheaper, by some foreigner in an offshoring center. We saw this same cycle play out after the 2000 and 2009 busts. Our only lasting competitive advantages come from people physically working together, in Silicon Valley or one of the other job hubs.
Pretty weak "reporting" if you could call it that at all. Saying US companies "can't find workers in the US" isn't really accurate. "Wanting to pay 20¢ on the dollar" is more accurate. As someone who has been active in the tech scene on both sides of the border, the talent pool in TJ is nowhere near on par with almost any US metro. Why is KPBS running puff pieces instead of journalism? Saying this as someone who used to donate to KPBS...
