Wish I had seen this nearly 2 years ago when I first brought my 8 week old whippet puppy home. So easy to feel inadequate when watching all the border collie puppies being trained on social media. My Nico turned out great though where it matters (can take him anywhere and he is neutral around other dogs), and we have a lot of fun together.

This is one of the most insightful videos I've ever seen when it comes not only to dog training but just training in any discipline! It's so easy to set the wrong expectations for ourselves and others because of how progress is shown on these platforms. Whether it's dog training, firearms training, etc. It pays to look at them all in a balanced and discerning manner...

I have been training and breeding dogs for many years. Everything you said is so true. The goal for most of our customers is to have a dog that is polite, and does what is ask of them. The way to get a dog like that is spend time with the dog, teaching them to fit in to your lifestyle.

My guide dog in training makes me belly laugh at least 3 times per day. We don't strive for perfection but we do always end on a good note.

Oh, you do make me laugh ! You are so honest and your videos remind me of training my labrador. She is a very good dog, an amazing, well behaved dog. Now. The early training? Wowzers, it was a process. I am so glad I stuck with it, recognized and accepted both the dogs and my, limitations. Thank you, for being the voice of reason.

I'd actually like to see you do more videos showing the frustrations of dog training. Especially since most people watching don't have the practiced patience of a professional trainer. I think you'd be great at helping people know what to expect and how to work thru the frustrations. You're one of the few dog trainers on YT with genuine honesty and integrity and it's earned you a lot of trust, at least with me. I think it opens up an opportunity for new content for your channel. Instead of just telling people not to get frustrated like everyone else does, teach people the same things you learned as a trainer in how to deal with the frustrations. It's easy for a pro trainer with years of daily experience to say "don't ever get frustrated with your dog", but for everyone else, it's going to happen. I'd much rather have someone coach me thru that than just telling me not to get frustrated and gaslighting me for getting annoyed with myself when it does. You're one of the few people I'd trust to do that :)

That's so true Stonnie =) I remember you saying in other videos "a tired dog, is a good dog". I guess a super tired dog unveils the true work has done with it. Unfortunately (and I am speaking as a 14 months old dog owner) nobody can tell how many months or years needs a dog to meet the owner's expectations. Considering that those expectations are not surreal!

Thanks Stonnie. I find myself saying “no one is judging you” when I’m struggling with my dog. I live in the city and sometimes he gets overstimulated on our way home, pulling sniffing or refusing to walk even though he’s much better than all the other dogs in the neighborhood. I have to trust the process.

Yes, my first dog I "trained" ( with a instructor at a 6 meeting basic puppy training), was a border collie. Easy. Now I'm trying to get a 6 month old Anatolian Shepherd to do a couple of commands so she is safe around the goats and me. I'm 68 years old and she is probably going to be over-sized according to her paws. I have to train her NOW not to jump on me or the goats for when she is 130 pounds. Going slowly but we are both learning to trust each other - my arm is almost healed from her warning bites and jumping on me with the claws! 😊 Thanks for the help you have given me in the short time since I found your videos.

Always love watching had a family friend that trained personal protection dogs in the 60’s through 90’s always loved watching the dogs being trained

I just want to thank you for acknowledging hard parts of the long-term goal like dog training. It's really helped my every day work with my GSD. I didn't research the crazy energy levels of a GSD, but now he's part of my family and has to be managed in a disciplined way. Your talks help me feel less frustrated with the hard parts. Hey Stonnie. Funny you mention "the show me state", that's where I am. I got my GS from some wonderful folks in TN and they recommended your channel. I just wish I was better with training him because I don't want to set him up for failure. I'm struggling with recall and his chasing the cats. He's not trying to hurt them, just loves the chase and then there is the dreaded litter box and cat 💩🤮. Love your videos. Thank you!

Hi Stonnie. Just watched your question about B channel video. I think this sort of information is also important for your A channel. Explain what a focus heal is versus a loose leash heal etc. Pros and cons of each and where you use them. Education. Education. Education, 🙃

…What gorgeous sable coloring on your Malinois. Such a healthy coat, and we know he has plenty of exercise, because those black nails are short and rounded. I rarely see dogs in everyday life that have short nails anymore. 😁🐶🐾🚜💨

I would certainly welcome another Stonnie channel, but you need to do what makes sense for you. I don’t know how much time is needed for content creation and editing, etc., and if that would impact your life in a negative way. Very true. Just yesterday I had my dog take off I recalled him full sprint and he stopped and came back I was super happy and proud of him about an hour later he was playing with my moms dog and I went to recall him and he wouldn’t had to call him 5 times till he finally came to me. Was like really now you make me look bad.

Hit the nail on the head! This is exactly what I have been thinking as I come across the shorts of these seemingly perfectly trained dogs. What goes through my head watching those close heels is "well shoot that's what most untrained dogs look like when you trying to walk across the kitchen with a steak!" 😂 staring at you, right at your side, 100% attention, nearly stepping on your toes! Heck my 5 month puppy can do it too, its basic luring. If anything those tiktok trainers should make it more interesting by ballancing the ball on their own nose while their dog heels, now that would be a cool trick lol

Thank you so much for this! I was just saying this to my good friend who adopted a dog last week and was feeling overwhelmed, so much of the dog training content we see on social media is super disingenuous, contrived, and far far from the reality of working with dogs. Sure there are SOME dogs who will have perfect obedience under the right circumstances, after disciplined, consistent and prolonged training. But this idea that every dog can walk perfect on a leash all the time is total BS, and the idea you are 20 mins and a prong collar away from perfect obedience is even more laughable. Dogs are complicated animals, they all have different ways of learning and different genetics which predispose them to behaviors. Do not measure your worth as an owner or your dog’s worth as a pet against 30 second video where you are only seeing a highlight reel of what that person wants you to see so you can believe what a great trainer they are. Take pride in training your dog to the best of its abilities, chances are you are doing better than 90% of ppl who own a dog if you are even reading this.

Stonnie's observation about the effects of technology has generalizable relevance across areas. For example, just as editing seems to short-cut the process of training, tech tools appear to "hack" literacy skills. Real literacy training takes time and effort/work.

Dog training is not complete in any length of time. Dog training is an EVERY DAY way of life. If you think you trained the dog to X and it's done. Your dead wrong. You will always have a teachable moment and probably have to make a correction almost everyday. (If your with them a lot).

The market tool and sales pitch created to showcase where they're claiming to be able to bring your dog to, it plants a seed of the dog owner becoming that rock-star when their dog behaves in such an awesome manner, or that if you have some wildly out of touch dog, that your dog will also be transformed with a minute's worth of that guy holding the lead in a manner to avoid being bitten and magically imparting to that dog that he needs to submit to the leader on the other end of the lead. Sure, it's great to have someone bring that new perspective to a dog, but the owner needs to learn how to project that same level of leadership to the dog, so the dog associates their owner as being just as strong of a leader. Building trust and respect takes time, allowing the dog to take the time to learn what's expected is all part of that relationship you're building, and the memories being created. "Flip-flog", "instascam", "faceplant", and the like are the new Hollywierd. Reality is still reality; work is still work. Common sense is still not so common these days. Down to earth, boots on the ground reality still gets the results.

I love the way you train your dogs and how you socialize them but lately you focus too much about explaining yourself instead of just showing how you get results with different dogs.

Your video made just no coherent sense and logical thought pattern. What are you even trying to convey in this video that dogs get tired after a long day of play or adventure. Yes all dogs get tired. All the dogs who have that engagement you see competition healing. Those dogs are always listening no matter what I know I had many I have trained and lived with. Sure one in a blue moon they’ll disobey but that’s when you look towards the 4 quadrants of operant conditioning and give some positive or negative punishment. Anyways this video says absolutely nothing. Those videos are apart of the bigger picture. You don’t cater to dogs with high drive and sport dogs you cater to dogs with little to no drive house dogs that people come online to try help. Again ur video talks in sentences but makes no sense. I mean yeah all those tik tok people or whatever you call them obviously don’t loook like their videos all the time. Dogs are right different styles of healing. Yeah they go for the competition heeling because it’s flair for the internet but those guys don’t pretend or make false claims that their dogs always in high drive mode completion heeling around the mall. Just makes no sense all the handlers that I know teach many forms of heeling and do flair types of obedience for fun and to have fun with the dog not to make it look like that’s what the dog is always like. A real trained dog listens the handler 100 Perfent of the time with a once in a blue moon fail. But they go thru steps to properly train the dog and build drive something on don’t have the slightest clue about. When my dog or any worthwhile handler gives a dog a command the dog should look like lightning struck the dog and the dog springs into action why? Because the handler has built over the space of a year or so engagement and drive. Knows things like the pre MAC principle and how dog theory can be used to harness dogs drives and improve their want to work or be obedient. If u train small behaviors on a regular basis and have high value engagement with them with high value rewards and use things like a variable reward schedule. Drive capping which is impulse control. Socialization thru environment and obedience. That’s training. Classical conditioning. Marker training bridge commands. The list goes on and if ur trainer doesn’t speak in theee terms they don’t know what the hell they’re doing. Furthermore I just got a message from Larry Krohn agreeing with me that he actually came across you and he also seconds my opinion on you having little clue about real dog training. Again your back to the obstacle course telling us the dog had a long day and this is how those tik tok dogs looks when they are not on camera. Like yeah and….. those dogs are dogs they get tired. Unless commanded to a competiton heel no dog IGP champ or seal team 6 MPC does all that all the time. Your like speaking with no point it’s like ur training it’s like ur speaking and showing dogs how to climb things but ur offering no real advise on anything. I dunno brother where did you learn to become a dog trainer most of us went to school for it. Learned about how animals learn and how to train them …
