The reason Tikka/Sako barrels do not need to be broken in is because these barrels do not have their riflings machine cut in. They are cold hammer forged into the barrel. With a jig inside the barrel. Still never a bad idea to run a quick patch before first fire. After that go to town. No need to clean between shots as there is no machining inside these barrels.

Yeah, I make sure the wife is at work when I shoot out the kitchen door lol it’s when I’m shooting the 338 Lapua off the table that things REALLY start getting ugly. When that goes off, it knocks things off the wall, stops the clock in the dining room and sets the fire alarms into a chirp mode lol great times... I try to make sure the house is aired out by the time she gets home. 👍🏼

There are no tooling marks from machining (as you stated) in a hammer forged barrel my friend. And the debris on the very first patch you ran is more than likely from the two test fire rounds fired at the test bench in the factory. In my humble opinion.
@DialingLongDistance
@DialingLongDistance 3 года назад
You are correct in my opinion. The only place there might be any tooling marks, may be from the chambering process, in which case that would only be (to my knowledge) in he throat area. I don’t think the chambers are hammer forged, (again, I could be wrong), I believe the bores are. Either way, ‘breaking in’ the barrels on all my rifles is something I’ve just done out of habit. Most of the time, I’m not sure of the processes used to make the rifle barrels the manufacturers use, so I just do it on my own. Even still, allot of people don’t break in any barrel, they just go out and shoot them, and allot of the time, they shoot great anyway 🤷🏼‍♂️
@admscoo622
@admscoo622 2 года назад
As per the Tikka manual at the factory they shoot two overpressure cartridges in order for the rifle to pass CIP testning (equivalent of SAAMI testing) followed by some regular Sako FMJ rounds for the accuracy test (I'd guess 3 or 5 rounds) so 5-7 rounds fired before being shipped off to the vendor/retailer

Cold hammer forged barrels don't need a break in. There's no Sharp edges in that process.
@DialingLongDistance
@DialingLongDistance 3 года назад
Not from rifling, but I always thought that there would be tooling from chambering, where the throat meets the rifling. (?)🤷🏼‍♂️ I always liked the idea of breaking in any barrel, for the sake of things like that, no matter the process of it’s making. It’s habit for me.

@@DialingLongDistance depends if the chamber was formed during the HF process. If yes, then not tool marks, if no, then there may be tool marks in the chamber.

The Tikka barrels are Cold Hammer Forged so the bores will be clean and smooth from the factory. Tikka guarantees 3rd groups for 1MOA, they’ll do 5rd groups for 1MOA for the T3X TACT and Varmint rifles - same as Sako’s standard. Something to consider with the Hornady ammo, I tried 5 or 6 types of Hornady alone in my Tikkas, they generally like the Match line and do well with the Black line as well. Great review.

Considering my local laws, I spent 4 years choosing a riffle and settled on a T3 CTR in .308. I wanted the Super Varmint with heavy barrel, but no bueno. I have a hunting licensed gun that has never gone hunting, it's a med PSR riffle that I took @ 1600 meters competition and finished 19th out of 23! Great barrel out the box, stock stock sux, action is smooth as silk after 100+ rounds and trigger is adjustable (mine is 420 grams, stock trigger), great riffle. The Super Varmint is a tad better due to barrel thickness and length, however no picatiny, no muzzle thread, same messed up stock. So extra costs of configuration. I believe Tikkas are best bang for buck, at least where I am, although Bergara is giving them a run for the money with the B-14, however I hate the the REM-700 trigger/safety. Bergara Spain is a barrel manufacturer, they make great barrels , backed by a rem 700 action/trigger, the premier series is something to look at. Bergara premier series is a bit more expensive than a T3x stock. I just love the trigger of the Tikka out the box, however the Bergara premier comes with an aftermarket trigger group (based on Rem 700) and they add a bit of bedding in the stock out the box. Just beware, the Tikka CTR is between barrels profiles, it's not a super varmint, but comes with most accessories out the box. P.s. The Tikka T3x Super Varmint is the gun to get, than modify it. ,,,,or a Bergara Premier, if you have the money

So true what you say… Got myself a .308 CTR SS 20”, just because the Super Varmint wasn’t available at the time. Now I ordered the Super Varmint in 300WM. Still keeping the CTR 🤪

Nicely done video with practical common sense techniques for new rifle break in and testing procedure. Great information for the average shooters, especially newer ones. Obviously not your first rodeo. Like the way you roll... I have a shooting bench in the upstairs bedroom for sniping squirrels in the orchard. I'm currently considering a CTR in .308 (wind cheater) because the T3x Varmint in .223 I bought a couple years ago will put 10 Federal 69g GMM under a dime at 100 and a quarter at 200. Tikka delivers great value. The CTR in a KRG Bravo chassis, the UPR, and a Sako S20 Precision are the finalists. Thank you for your contribution.

I am left handed and shoot right handed as well. I have a left handed Savage that seems more difficult to manage than a right handed model. Right handed guns are easier for me to use. I don't need to look over the gun to see the ejection port and the chamber, it's right in front of me. Try a right handed bolt action 22 and make your own mind up.
