Tikka T3x Arctic / C19 Canadian Rangers Rifle Range Time Take Two 

I like this rifle.

Human eyes are really good at centering dots inside circles. Ghost rings work VERY well.

I GOT MINE BACK IN 2018.. Never an issue with mine. Iron sights are great. It's one of the most accurate rifles I got. A NICE ONE FOR SURE!

Remember a few things. Best results come from use as designed. Designed for glove wearing in very cold weather. A wooden stock is "warmer" to the touch in below zero conditions than plastic. Barreled for close range shooting (25 to 100 yards) and a 180 grain bear stopping bullet. Bears are more of a threat than bad guys. Test firing with 180 grain bullets would have provided a better look at how it shot than 145 grain plinking ammunition. Is the barrel twist for 180 grain bullets? Yup! Using a scope to determine true accuracy would have provided better information. I love my Tikkas because they are very accurate out of the box. I would love to see 100 yard scoped results with 180 grain ammunition. I know my Tikka varmint .308 with 175 grain bullets shoots MOA at 600 yards with reloads. Factory ammo would be a little less but that isn't what the Arctic was designed for.

Really, my only complaint is that we have reached a point where the only way to have "good things" outside of the Third World in weaponry is to spend a fortune more than already what was considered a fortune in the day. The SMLE update that Canada adopted for its rangers was not a cheap gun in its day, but it worked remarkably well for the cost of its time compared to these new toys. So much money for rather small improvements. Such is Modernity...

Keep in mind that the actual functional requirements for this rifle as issued to the Canadian rangers is to be able to kill a polar bear at danger close range, and to not snap in half at -40.

The aperture situation DOES stink. I love a ghost ring for low light/moving target/100m and under. My groups are just about as tight with the only real loss for me being post clarity and target definition. That's a shame. My favorite aperture setup is the US "A2" with the ghost ring. It is VERY versatile.

Interesting....thanks for the follow-up on this rifle. I do like ghost rings....not really fond of polar bears. A full size rifle caliber in smooth bolt action would be my choice if a significant emotional incident arises.

Any idea if they would stick those irons on any other “normal” tikka rifle. Would love to have an iron sighted one made for those of us with severe genetic defects (left handedness)

I’m super impressed by your shooting, I was shooting at 100 yards with my Mauser 98k Much slower taking my time and it’s challenging to see a man size target at 100 y distance and the group was like over five inches for sure and using the yugo ammo that’s supposed to be good surplus, but you shooting at the speed and that 300 yards omg that’s really impressive and it makes me feel here where I live we don’t have any marksmanship fundamentals. *IF you prefer the Ghost Ring... You certainly may... Have ONE or more of the several apertures reamed out to your preferred size. Doing it this way allows for perfect sizing to suit your eye.*

I’ve just had the same issue with my Tikka Arctic front sight. Hopefully Beretta Australia get me the newer front sight.

If they made this in a green laminate, I would be all over it like a rat on a Cheeto. I disagree with many and think .308 is perfect, and there is ZERO reason you can't down a polar bear with a .308. Heart and lung shots are worthless on a bear charge. Brain only shots are key, and it will down one easily if placed appropriately. Reason being, in case you don't know, is a bear has enough oxygen in system, and it's heart only beats a single handful of times a minute normally anyway, and it can go a long while without both lungs or a heart. It also dumps adrenaline in it's system madly fast. So bears can go a full minute or often more without circulatory organs. Also, it allows for cheap practice and is a standard NATO caliber, so ammo is cheap, easy to find, and can work in warfare environments, too. Lastly, the rifle being bolt is critical. Many don't have experience in super cold, where even pump action shotguns and almost all automatics will freeze up and totally stop functioning. Rifles like this purposely designed to function in extreme cold (by extreme, I mean sub -40⁰F/C) are mandatory. The vast majority of folks have no clue what fifty and sixty below is like. Negative ten isn't even close guys. Arctic warfare is a whole nother level. I would like to see a removable trigger guard too, btw.

Not that I'm likely to pay the asking price for one of these, but I'm disappointed to hear that they scrapped the large "battle sight" aperture. As a military small arms instructor, I'd argue that it's hugely important feature for iron sights on a service rifle in that it provides options for the soldier: 1. It is a quicker option for aimed shots at closer ranges (at very close ranges this site style in particular with a wide aperture is brilliant for the "put the front site shroud circle inside the rear aperture circle, pick up the post and fire HK diopter style snap shot). 2. It obscures less of the soldier's field of view and it also allows for easier shots with both eyes open (both of which increas situational awareness), and ; 3. It is a much more usable option in sub optimal light conditions (important for a rifle used in the Arctic where facing permanent darkness for months at a time as well as 24h of sunlight reflecting off of snow are both factors).

They honestly did not think anyone would use it without the scope. And I honestly think the rifle is not fully used to its potential/cost with iron sights. Do your shoes match your tool bag and blouse?

For approx $4000 cad it should make my breakfast, clean the house and reload it's own ammo ! It should not have to be returned after the first outting !

Nosler is by no means a hollow point. Its a soft point with kind of odd bonding and depratmenting of the bullet. Good for hunting, though.

Shame that you can't use the Canadian ranger ammo. It would be nice to see the accuracy potential of this rifle by seeing a couple of groups shot with a scope.

I had a air rifle with sights similar to yours there. I did not like them at all, centering the front post being my main issue. Im sure they work fine, but i much prefer notch type sights. Or even better, a low power adjustable scope :P while im here, it would be awesome to see some clay pigeon shotgun-ing on the channel. Its the best shooting there is imo :)

Just got mine in 6.5 Creed and it comes with the sights you have except the 0 setting is a much bigger ghost ring than the other 5 settings.

Can you please explain why you cant use hunting or hollow bullets ? Seems rather odd to me.

Did they give you a range or some guidance to the zero setting on the aperture to have all of the range setting to be correct? Have you ever tried heavy bullets like 180-grain nosler accubond? I read that it is the ammo the Arctic was designed for but couldn't verify? Thanks After watching a 2 time I heard you can't use the 180 nosler. I would like to know what the zero is designed for it looked like a low elevation. Thanks again

Yikes!! You should be shooting ~3 shot groups, then let the barrel cool, to check accuracy. Otherwise, are just testing barrel heat warp stringing etc. ? Also, best to use relatively economical Hornady Whitetail ammo, which I find shoots as good as Hornady's more expensive match ammo etc. Astonishing accuracy for a basic hunting interlock round. ....That is, unless you are testing for military firefight conditions, which is great for the mad minute shooting you did. Hello - been following for a while and I like your "style". I notice with the "match" ammo in the deliberate group on the round target you had quite a bit of vertical stringing - which is usually a rifle (frequently bedding) or ammo issue - the group told me that you were shooting superbly, and that with a tiny bit of tuning of rifle or ammo you'll have a winner in your cabinet.

The only USA seller, Euro Optic, is asking $2300 for one of these now. That is INSANE and seeing as this gun has these issues FUCK that. Hope Colt Canada is doing a better job on the real C19s.

Are the mags a bit stiff when reloading on a closed bolt? It requires counting, but it does seem to be a bit more efficient.

Very nice groupings here taking into consideration it's a 300m range and iron sights. Since when are non-Swiss Army issued ammunition allowed on these ranges? As far as I can remember we had to use GP11 and later GP90.

@ 5:58 -- Those stubby little screwdrivers have taper heads: you'll need to hollow grind the tips so you have parallel flats on the tip [vs. the trapezoidal x-section they have now] or you'll bugger your screws. Get a proper set of gunsmithing screwdrivers if you can, but modifying those properly will be enough for range tools... #Don'tUseCarpentryToolsOnYourFineMachines!

Can anyone give a 1yrs report on it now? Looks like a great gun. I want a modern rifle that is shortish, open sights to a couple hundred meters, 10round box mag, sling.

Very annoyed today to be told by my local Tikka dealer after having a foresight on order for my Tikka Artic for 3 months, that Beretta Australia has informed them that Sako/Tikka that they will not supply the part. Not only is it disturbing to have sent $3500 AUD on a premium Tikka rifle which I can't apparently buy parts for. But may be a breach of the Australian Consumer Law. Section 58 of the Competition & Consumer Act of 2010 states parts are to be supplied for a reasonable period by unless informed in writing prior to purchase. Which I did not receive. If I had I would not have spent $3500 on a CTR.

I love the flashy stock otherwise there are other niceTikkas that cost much less. It's a nice rifle but way overpriced.

Excellent marksmanship. Polish that clunky bolt-way interface, add a proper shooting glove and coat, tighten the sling and stop breaking the cheek weld between shots and those groups would be halved.

Great rifle. Now explain to me wy they didn't buy something less expensive. If the civilian price is anything to go by, they could have bought six(!) scoped Ruger Americans for the price of 1 Tikka. Less durable? You've got 5 spares. Less accurate? I doubt it, and you came from a shot out Lee-Enfield, so I guess it's an improvement anyhow. And, seen the amount of rifles bought by the rangers, I guess Ruger would have trown in some after market parts for free, gave it a red stock and called it the Ruger Canadian 😂

I wish you would have mounted a scope, used a rabbit ears rear bag and taken at least one minute between shots for serious accuracy testing with 5 shot groups. "Mad Minute" shooting is NOT an accuracy test of this rifle. The RUGER Scout rifle was out years before the TIKKA C 19 (Canadian Ranger) rifle and the C19 appears to be a copy of the RUGER Scout with stainless steel barreled action and laminated stock. Personally I would feel better owning the stainless steel Ruger Scout knowing it is the SAME quality as the TIKKA C 19 but for far less money. Both have accurate cold hammer forged barrels and rugged bolt actions, the Ruger being a Mauser clone with controlled feed. BUT... the RUGER Scout is 1/2 the price of the TIKKA C 19 and the Ruger/Magpul magazines are 1/5 the price of theTIKKA magazines! So I'll take the RUGER Scout, thank you very much. Supporting the Finnish social system is not my priority. I own a 6.5 CM Ruger Precision Rile and a 6.5 CM Ruger American Predator. Both have Ruger'scold hammer forged barrels and are extramely accurate, as in 1/2" at 100 yards with match ammo. And what's this "...wrap you hand around it properly." stuff? WHY would you want to do that? I've owned many centerfire sporting rifles and never had the need to "wrap my hand around" the barrel - ever. Just hold the forearm. Keep your fingers OFF the barrel.

Being Canadian and a Long Branch shooter, I was quite excited about this rifle when it was first announced... Then I heard the price! It may be worth it, but it is money I can't afford, so I bought an 18.7" Ruger Gunsite Scout instead. Since the GSR was less than half the money and maybe even a little more accurate, I am very content.The Ruger is not that picky with ammo either. With a 6-24x scope I have found at least six factory loads that will shoot 10 shot groups under 1.75" at 100m. All this said, the T3x sure is a beautiful rifle! Thank you for the report.

Those crown royal bags are also great for storing dice.
