Tikka vs Howa Which is Better and Why!?
In this review we will take a look at the Tikka T3x Superlight, Howa Kuiu and the Howa H-S Precision rifle. I give my experience having used both and what I think. Is the Tikka better? Is the Howa better? You will have to watch all the way to the end to find out!

I have a howa HCR and a Tikka t3x and the Tikka takes the cake for me. Offered in left handed configuration, way smoother action and a better factory trigger.

But what if you made the simple work of smoothing out the action and adjusting the factory trigger down on the Howa? Then which one is better? I think Howa is definitely the overall better rifle.

As someone who owns both of these rifles in .308, with near identical setups, I'd have to say the tikka takes it for me by far, Howa definitely has good value, but long-range precision my tikka out performs Howa by a fair margin past about 400 yards

if it doesn't outperform the Howa under 400 yards, then how does it outperform past 400 yards with the same chambering? What happens to the bullet out of the Howa after it passes the 400 yard mark?

I have two Howa 1500s. They are incredibly accurate. One bolt is butter smooth and slides like the Tikka. The other is more like the one from his video. Both are tack drivers. I do like the stocks in the Howas a lot. They are excellent for gripping and not hollow. I love shooting these guns and they aren’t bank breakers.

I got only one howa in 270 but the bolt is stupid slick and smooth no issues at all only grip is the hogue stock is meh but I will definitely be getting another

my howa 1500 in 22-250 makes me giggle when i shoot it, varmint barrel and weight makes it have basically zero recoil and it was key holing rounds when i zeroed it. i had never heard of them before but i liked the look of it and asked to check it out, the bolt was orgasmically smooth, made me question buying my rem 700. as soon as i found out that Howa and the weatherby vanguard were the same rifle, i traded the gun shop an old pistol for the howa.

I was wanting to get my dad a new 'modern' rifle a upgrade from his heavy trusty .270. We wound up with the Tikka t3 and he loved it, put a Nikon scope on it and now the Nikon scope is a piece of art on this rifle. Have to say Dad hit targets faster, carried his rifle on the trips into the wilderness more often and loved the upgraded 7mm rem magnum payload. Dad's rifle convinced me to drop my 300 win/mag for a 7mm version for sure. Finding good mid priced glass is now a breeze with online thank goodness.

I just got the tx3 stainless. With factory ammo I can shoot 300 yards and only off dead center by 3/4 inch.I can shoot half inch groups at 100 with many hole in hole shots.Mine is the 270 and I have dropped 3 deer in two trips out in the woods so far.$800 bucks is still way cheaper than quite a few on the market.I only have two hundred in the scope. This is my first hi powered rifle so I'm very happy with the tikka and how it shoots but carrying it is a dream.

@@lessforloans No, the 270 is a cream puff to shoot. I'm use to a 12 gauge so the recoil on the 270 is hardly noticeable.

Have both. The Tikka is my big game gun and the Howa is my coyote gun. Been happy with both. This is one of those you can't go wrong comparisons.

Very interesting that you say Howa is cheaper. Much prefer Tikka trigger, Tikka’s bolt and smooth action, Tikka’s overall weight, Tikka’s accuracy, and that they realize that some people shoot left handed!

I like tikka. I just prefer certain things on the Howa or think certain things are built better. I have had great accuracy with my Howas. I would like Howa to smooth their actions out a little but other than that I have no complaints. I do feel Howa offers more models at different price points than Tikka and at least in my experience I have been able to get them cheaper most of the time. For example my tikka t3x superlight cost 750 my howa hs precision cost 620 the stock on my howa is wayyyy better than the stock that came on my t3x.

Bullets4Bucks I’ll agree with you on the stock if your talking synthetic stocks but the wood stocks on the Tikka Hunter is excellent. In fact after glass bedding we saw little or no improvement in the already superb accuracy, made us wonder why we even did it.

Tikka is my choice. Reasoning? I have 3 tikka's and they all shoot amazing (1 is uncanny how precise it is with factory ammo.) BUT, I'm really intrigued by Howa cause of all the good things I've heard but I like to stick with what works for me.

After hearing so many touting them, I was considering buying a Tikka until I saw they have a plastic trigger guard and magazine. Now I can appreciate my Howa-made Weatherby Vanguard with a Walnut stock that much more. A true tack driver that's practically identical to the 1500.

I have 2 Howa built from the barreled actions through Brownell. Absolutely love them both. I have the mini action hvy brl in 6.5 grendel and the 1500 standard barrel in 7mm REM mag. Both are installed on the bell & Carlson stocks with the full length aluminum bedding block. This set up is rock solid with the howa integral recoil lug

I also have the Howa but I put it in an HS Precision stock. The Bell & Carlson is similar to the HS in that it also incorporates the bedding block. Weights are similar , price is lower on the Bell but here’s the difference for me. The HS has no cheekpiece whereas the Bell does. So why do I care? Since I started shooting with stocks with adjustable cheek risers I’ve come to realize how important cheek weld is. With the HS I can attach fitted plastic risers of varying heights because the cheekpiece hump isn’t there. I also have a Bradley adjustable cheek riser that works great on the HS but doesn’t fit on the Bell for the same reason. I see the cheek riser on your guns but they are both bulkier and much heavier than the Bradley

I'm late the party here but I have owned 2 Howas and 5 Tikkas. I sold 1 of the Howas and 3 of the Tikkas (of which 1 I regret), and overall... each has their own reason to shine. I do believe the Howa trigger is marginally better than the Tikka and it's less finnicky with ammo choices than my Tikkas have been. Whenever I hunt with one, I never wish I had the other. Once they're dialed up and dialed in, they're super dependable in both function and accuracy. I do have a factory Tikka that measures 2.1lbs on the trigger pull and that actually matches the Howa I still have. To go lower, I have rifles that do, but I really don't notice that half pound of difference when focusing on a target. I have a Remington 700 (older) that measures 5lbs 3oz. on the trigger and for some reason, it doesn't affect my ability to shoot every bit as accurate as the lighter triggers. I can't explain it, but it is what it is. Overall, just know that there is an avenue to complete satisfaction no matter which one you choose. You can literally flip a coin and be fine. However, if you're like me, the only way to know for sure is to have one of each. I can almost guarantee that you too will find your way to absolutely loving them both. I was in the same decisive situation between these two. I know I wanted either in a KRG Bravo chassis. I almost bought the T3X CTR but ended up buying a Howa 1500 20" 308 barreled action from Brownell instead. I'm so glad I did. With the HOWA, I was able to bring the trigger down to 1lb just by snipping the sear spring. And I prefer double stage over single. Dont get me wrong, the Tikka is phenomenal but I don't think it was worth several hundred dollars more. I would've went with the Tikka T3X Lite just to replace the barrel with something thicker down the road in 22 or 24 inch in 308. I wasnt trying to pay a premium for something that I would replace down the road. I would say that this comparison was similar to Glock 19 vs Beretta 92 in every way, especially in terms of action smoothness, functionality, and appearances.

Only thing wrong with a Howa is they lack the snobbery factor associated with very expensive hardware. Weatherby thinks enough of Howa to have them as the production facility for the Weatherby Vanguard barreled actions. Some like to snicker about things made in Japan but most of the better cars in the world are made there, simply because of their superior machining practices and great attention to quality control. It's not about what you pay for something, it's about how well they work and how well you can use them.

Having had both. Both were very accurate. Sadly I got fed up dealing with a right hand action, while shooting wrong handed. Tikka makes a lefty option. Howa/Vanguard does not. Tikka for me.

Quality, yes, but I'm not so sure how much better the Tikka can perform in accuracy. My barreled action from Brownell that I threw into the KRG Bravo shot sub MOA with Hornady factory loads and 1/2 MOA with handloads. I'm looking to buy a Tikka CTR or Super Varmint to see if it can do just as good or better.

For the money, the Howa is hard to beat. Several earlier comments mention something you skipped in the video... In addition to all the options Howa already offers, you also can buy as a barreled action and use with the stock of your choice. I don't recall seeing Tikka available as barreled actions, but haven't looked lately. I have the 1500 in 308 with the magazine conversion, which was easy to install. Mine has a Timney trigger because it was made before the HACT was being offered. If I bought today I would probably stick with the HACT, but haven't really compared it to the Timney. So who knows!

I have both. I got the tikka new with a aftermarket grs stock straight from the dealer. I think that the tikka has the quality edge. But it is such a small difference. The howa had a better barrel twist 1-12 for my 22-250 and in a short action. 1-14 with Tikka. I recommend Howa to anyone, the triggers on my howa rifles are all very good.

Currently waiting on the Howa heavy barreled action in 308 to come back in stock then im putting it in a oryx chassis. Will be my very first entry level long range set up. I was first going to do a savage 110 tactical, but further research changed my mind and turned me onto the howa.

Tikka. Always Tikka. Smoother, better trigger. Trued out of the factory. Many upgrades available (if you want it cause you sure do't need it) Better accuracy. Better feel. Howa has NO after sales support. They dropped me in the shiz so I got rid every one I had. Spent a load of noney on them, never could spent them into Tikka class

Respectfully disagree. I had to put aftermatket triggers in. Aftermarket stocks since the hogue sucks. My most expensive rifle for a long time was a Howa. Couldnt get it to shoot. Contacted Howa. They basically told me that it wasnt their fault I bought a Howa... so I got rid of all of them. My Tikkas on the other hand I have a hard time picking the best groups with. Factore triggers break at 1.5 lbs. Totally safe. These two cant be mentioned in the same sentence. Seen plenty Creedmoors with barrels toast at 700 rounds. Quality isnt what it should be.

I bought the Howa 1500 7mm-08. Both Tika and Howa shoot great but I’m about saving money for the Howa than spending a few hundred bucks more for the Tika. Why spend more money when I can get the same thing from Howa? Scope plus break-in ammo add the next amount to the price. Better Value from Howa and when dropping an animal it doesn’t ask which one made it lay down. Spend more if you want but my action is smooth enough to cycle a follow up shot if needed. Plus I like the Howa Bolt better with its quick release to service the firing pin with just one quick twist. Pillar bedding on the Howa is integrated or the Aluminum Bed Block is like having a chassis while keeping the stock short. Hunting I want the Howa as I don’t shoot from a bench, when hunting I don’t bring a chair, a table and a vise/bags, I use a bipod adjustable stand that I sometimes use as a walking stick to vault over objects when stalking because a bolt on bipod is too heavy and I don’t shoot prone much. If you read this then Howa owes me $5. 🤙🏽

Still a Tikka Fan. Wanted a rifle with a removable mag that had larger capacity mags available, safety that locked the bolt, stainless steel barrel. Tikka checked all my boxes. Plus exceptional accuracy right out of the box.

the real advantage of the Howa is the solid built, bullet proof design that they give you for such a great price compared to the cheap, plasticy feeling tikka. Howa definitely all the way.

This is making my decision a lot more difficult. I am looking at jumping into the 6.5 game, and have it narrowed down to essentially 3 rifles Bergara B-14 HMR ($900) Howa 1500 HCR ($999) Tikka T3x Tac lite, and put that in a KRG Bravo stock. ($998 for rifle, $400 for KRG) All 3 have great feeling factory actions, and good triggers. I don't think there is really any right or wrong choice. It's going to fall down to preference, and overall cost. Several people have said to me "If you're going to buy the tikka and put it in the KRG Bravo, why not just buy the tac-a1?" Because that is $1800 straight out of the gate! That's why

I order all my guns and have them shipped into a local ffl. I find great deals that way. I probably would just buy a model that comes in a good chassis or stock right off but thats a personal call. The new howa tsp looks cool also. Lots of options.

Both are good. The Tikka might feel nicer in the hand but I like the build of the Howa. You can't go wrong with either.

The Tikka feels better and lighter for hunting and going out long distances for hunting. The Howa has some heft unless you can find a Alpine model. I think it was their Mountain Rifle series and was lighter, but probably more money than the Tikka.

Before I even watch the clip, the price differential gives away which is better. Are Tikka’s that much better than a Howa to justify the price difference? I’m not sure that they are but there is just that extra refinement about them. Would I buy the Howa? Yes! I did. First in .223. Now I’m no shooting expert. I can operate a firearm safely, choose and mount a suitable scope, sight it in, Punch .224” groups in paper at 100 yds and put foxes down on the spot up to 150 yds (my preferred limit) with that .223 Howa. I’ll never become an expert (mainly because I don’t want to become an adenoidal twerp that professes such). That rifle inspired enough confidence in my shooting that when it came to choosing a .308 it was a no brainer. Add to that the .308 was £525, brand new with brown laminate stock (.223 is ash grey), blued varmint barrel and picatinny rail thrown in; what more reason could you need. (It was a special offer at a show). Even a shooting muppet like me can get moa at 100m. Would the Tikka make me 50% - 60% (based upon the RRP’s I’ve seen) better again? I don’t think so. So, is the Tikka a better rifle? If they’re just on a bench and you’re looking at the quality and the finish then yes, undoubtably it would win. If you add in the cost and the human factor, then Howa is Tikka’s match everyday of the week! Now, on to this gent’s review...

The hs precision is a super expensive upgrade in Canada I think it’s about 600 dollars more than the Hoag, I think it’s priced about 1500 dollars.

Never understand people saying the Tikkas don’t have options. They have 4 barrel profiles: super lite, lite, a sort of medium profile on the roughtechs and Veils, and a varmint/heavy barrel. They also have 2 different polymer stocks, 2 wood stocks, a laminate, and a metal chassis. Some take AICS mags, some take the more hunting oriented plastic mags.

I love my howa alpine mountain rifle. They discontinued it. Super light and awesome stock and very accurate. Basically a legendary arms works rifle for way less money. I got two of them new in box on gunbroker for under $700. If I had to pay full price I’d go buy an xbolt pro

Bullets4Bucks xbolt pro has a lot going for it but the sako carbonlight is my dream rifle. I was disappointed in the quality control of the howa alpine. My hinges floor plate wouldn’t open because of the stock fit. The 10 round plastic magazine howa has is pretty much crap. They really need to redesign that thing.

Howa makes probably some of the best value rifles on the market, but as a lefty this isn't even a conversation. Tikka has possibly the largest selection of factory left hand options on the market, while Howa has none at all.

Quality, out of the box SUB MOA shooting an it is all made by tikka , well the barrel is a sako barrel so that is a plus. But what I find very interesting is with all the pluses that howa has, the tikka still shoots better than it does. So that tells me either the stock is as good as the howa OR the tikka is just that much better.. plastic trigger guard, plastic stock, and better shooting.. hmmmmmm

Rockjock007 the Howas are sub MOA. That said, if I were using it as a bench rest, paper puncher I may lean towards a Tikka. But as a hunting rifle, with a sporter barrel, I’ll go with a Howa 1500 stainless, which I did. It’ll make that clean, kill shot no problem. After seasoning the barrel, and zeroing the scope, the only other times it went to the range, is prior to a hunt, to confirm it’s still holding zero. After the hunt, it’s cleaned, and stored, until the next hunting trip. Bolt guns are not recreational shooters, to me.

The Howa is just the better rifle. Solid, quality, accuracy, and no plastic. I love that Howa sell the barrelled actions without a stock so that you can put them into whatever you want. I have built a few Howa over the years in various stocks and they all performed extremely well accuracy wise right out of the box. I have my own which is a long action 30-06 sitting in a Boyd's Agility with pillar bedding. I originally planned to Devcon bed it but didn't need to. The thing is a half MOA gun at 100 metres out of the box with bog standard Federal factory ammunition.

I have the Howa .223 mini action blued, I punched in 5 bullets in a perfect hole at 50m with Geko Express 55gr and also at 100m 3 in a perfect hole. It’s a very accurate rifle for a budget price.

Great video. I have a howa 1500 .308 stainless. I regret not getting a heavy barrel, couldn't find ome at the time. Nevertheless, love my howa smoked game at 400. Currently I'm looking for a different caliber 6.5. I keep going back and forth between Tikka and Howa. I'm leaning on tikka because they are more after market friendly vs the howa. Easier to make upgrades and change out barrels. But of course price is at least a 40% difference in some cases. I don't understand why more guys haven't done reviews on the Howa. What would you go with? My goal is to shoot 1000 yards this summer.

@@Bullets4Bucks It's the 21st century, if you're replacing a stock at all you've got no reason to avoid putting it in a chassis. Also it shows the the difference in finishing between the 2 rifles. That extra work put into tikka/sako barrels is the reason why they'll outshoot factory howas every time. (when respectably equipped with stock/mount/rings/scope)

You are correct. My error. The Tikka T3X Superlight Veil models have both the fluted bolt and fluted barrel. The standard T3X Superlight like you show in your video only has the fluted barrel. I have both models. My Superlight Veil model is chambered in 7mm Rem. Mag and my standard T3X Superlight is .243 caliber. Both are tack drivers and very light.

the problems with Tikka are what you laid our for sure .. .the plastic (and even their walnut) stock leaves a lot to be desired. But the real issue is that 3 years ago when you made this video the price gap wasn't that large between a Howa and a Tikka but now tikka are selling Stainless models for close to $1000 when they cost around $750 a few years ago.. With Howa you can buy a barreled action for 400-500 bucks spend another 300-500 bucks on a really nice stock and you have an amazing rifle for less than a tikka. Also as you point out Howa is offering amazing stock options as well. I also really like the internal magazine system on the Howa ... just simple and nothing to fall out and get lost while hunting.

I have stopped mentioning doing trigger jobs in new videos on howas in comparisons, mostly as that just goes into the weeds. Videos I used to have on doing trigger jobs have also been removed because of youtube policy issues and liability.

Tikka all day. Simple safety. Smooth action. Excellent trigger. Who cares about upgrades (except for a quality scope). If you have to upgrade your rife you bought the wrong rifle. Tikka all day. My 10\22 takedown. The only thing that I upgraded was the furniture. I liked the Magpul better than stock that it came with. The rifle itself was fine.

Really like your videos. I just learned I could build a "semi-custom" hunting rifle instead of buying a CVA Cascade XT or Bergara Wilderness Sierra. I do want to build one but don't want to spend over $2K even though I could. My wife would then shoot me. I like how strongly you praise the Howa. Tikka actions are butter smooth. People say the shoot well. I hate their recoil lug design and honestly it scares me a bit if I used it to shoot steel and paper. Howas design is better and definitely a more rigid design. For the money Howa is tough to beat. Tikkas Tupperware stocks are horrendous. I feel Tikkas are over priced for what you get.

Tikka Can buy a prefit fixed shoulder barrel aftermarket... (besides custom actions only begara mass produces a firearm that supports this) Can reduce trigger weight to less than 1 pound with a trigger spring that costs 8 bucks... The aftermarket support is only second to the r700 action... a chassis for the tikka is 380 bucks... Howa less aftermarket support then Savage which is saying something... Yes they shoot okay out of the box tho...

I have two Howa's one in 223 and one in 308. My rifles are good enough that I have no desire to upgrade. With that being said, the Tikka is the better rifle in my opinion. If I had nothing and knowing what I know now, I would choose the Tikka. The catch is the Tikka isn't far enough ahead of the howa for me to jump ship.

People an argue all they want saying a howa 1500 is the same as weatherby vanguard and yes thats half true. The action is the same design. But weatherby does the assembly and finish work on there version. The bolt and raceway is lapped and has a more rugged consistent cerakote job, also stock fitment is better on the weatherby. .It passes the gravity bolt test just like a tika .

First, the giant Howa banner behind you does betray your bias towards Howa. Second a hunting trigger should definitely not be lighter than 2.5 pounds and a better break is more important. Third, I and many other hunters, HATE 3 position safeties because, when your in a high stress hunting situation, a two position safety is way more intuitive. I will however give the recoil lug design to the Howa for sure.

I appreciate you honesty, but what your posting is your opinion not an objective comparison. Bias precludes objectivity, so you might as well just say “I like Howa” and end your video. If they still made the alpine mountain hunter, it would be tough to argue that they made a great, affordable, seriously lightweight hunting rifle. Instead, they discontinued it.... not the best decision, but that’s just my opinion.

Like I am biased based on my experiences with Howa and the fact that they are built great. Of course we can argue that the fact they are built different doesn't make one better than another and its my opinion... lol. I watch videos on rifles to get facts and opinions from other people so I can come to my own conclusions. The first rifle I owned was a ruger, second was a remington and so on. I came to love Howa through experience and now I am biased towards them, however I know there are better rifles out there than Howa. I believe Howa is the best in its price class in most categories. I appreciate the input :) I will try to be more objective in the future.

A lot of people really like 3 position safeties which is why some manufacturers added the feature to their newer models. It's not really anymore difficult to shove the safety all the way forward on a 3 position safety vs a 2 position safety.

I once bought a Weatherby vanguard sporter and it was the worst rifle I ever owned shot 4" groups at 100 yards. I'm thinking it may have been from the howa barrels they use, the rough cut rifling really collected copper in a hurry. The howa 1500 is an alluring rifle at the price, but I don't wanna go through all that again. I've always been able to depend on the accuracy of savage and remington rifles

@@texasviking1 Yeah I did. Sweden are very strict with gun laws. First you have to take a hunting exam which inclueds theory, gun saftey and shooting. When youve passed that you can go to a gun store and buy a gun. However the store will send a application to the police. The police has to okey you as a gun owner. One is a Bushnell Engage 4-16x44 which I like and one was a Nikko Sterling 4-16x44 that wasn't bad either. I recommend the Howa H-S Precision in pretty much any caliber you like.
