TikTok's Obsession with Dark Humor 

I originally made the one sketch about Buzz assuming that he’s never done stand up before but upon doing further research, I found an old set of his from like 8 years ago that had some jokes that were actually kinda funny. Idk what happened in the past 8 years lol but yeah just thought I’d clear it up!

The whole “he’s not even saying anything” argument is literally the same thing as like “I’m not even touching you” when you’d purposefully try to piss off your siblings by putting your finger close but not touching them 😂

the worst part of this is is that it's so easy to make a joke that isn't offensive. here's one: a snake walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "how the fuck did you do that?"

The thing about dark humor is that it isn’t there to legitimately hurt someone’s feelings. It’s supposed to make light of a bad situation. This shit just isn’t funny in any way possible.

I had a "friend" that called my Hispanic best friend horrible things based off of offensive stereotypes and called them "jokes". After my SA when I was 12, people that I was close to would make jokes about it and expect me to find it funny. I am so glad that Kurtis spoke out against dark jokes because they are damaging and offensive.

The sexual assault "joke" is not a joke, it's a passive aggressive threat. It is not constructed and designed as a joke. His intent is not to make people laugh, it's to try to scare girls into stopping calling him out on his sexist content.

If you're making a joke about s*xual assault, the butt of the joke should be the abuser, not the victim. I thought this was common sense? It's not funny to be like "omg look at this person's highly traumatic experience lol!" I know being a snowflake means that you’re overly sensitive but if saying that something is homophobic or transphobic is considered overly sensitive than I’d rather be a snowflake than the alternative.

My sister and I both engage in dark humor, but only amongst ourselves. We were teenagers when our mom got cancer and our dad checked out emotionally from the family, so dark humor was our coping mechanism for it. It's a private thing because while it helps us, we both know that it will offend a lot of people and we don't want to offend anyone or make them uncomfortable.

I actually like dark jokes as a way of coping with difficult things (specifically my weak joints due to arthritis), and they can be hilarious in the right contexts. If one of my friends responds to me saying I’d throw a laptop at their head with “if you can even pick it up”, I almost punctured a lung laughing. The thing is, the problem has to happen TO YOU SPECIFICALLY, and the other people have to be in on the joke and they know that you’re okay with them.

a perfect example of dark humor is pete davidson making jokes about losing his dad from 9/11. it helps him cope with the trauma, and it isn’t mean-spirited. it makes the audience feel weird to laugh at since it’s such a morbid subject, but pete is allowed to joke about it since it’s /his/ trauma. dark humor is NOT joking about somebody else’s trauma, or making mean-spirited jokes at the expense of someone else. if another comedian made jokes about pete losing his dad, it would cross the line into being cruel. same thing with jokes based on homophobia, racism, transphobia, misogyny, etc.

That's not all that dark humor is. It's more shock value than anything like. These guys are just douchebags. I went to see my dentist and he warned me it was going to hurt. He ended up telling me he was having an affair with my wife. The funny thing is that this is exactly something kurtis would say.

from personal experience, I've set the rule that dark humor should be focused on the person saying the joke, not putting down other people. For example, I might make a morbid joke or make a joke about my depression/trauma. That's just my kind of humor. But I hate people who think dark humor is racist, sexist, homophobic, or just hateful comments. THAT isn't dark humor. It's rude and insensitive.

I mean... when I think dark humour I think me and my friends joking about a baby falling over... But fuck, rape...?
