TikTok Shop Has RUINED My FYP 

The term "influencer" needs to go altogether. We need more electricians.

The idea of anyone giving credit card information to TikTok is horrifying.

Influencers should be legally liable and held accountable for any bogus product they peddle.

My parents didn’t let me have any social media (unless you count RU-vid lol) while I feel excluded sometimes, I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with any of this crap

I like having TikTok shop be available for small businesses. But here’s how I would improve it. First, I would cut out the middle-man. This means if an influencer is simply promoting a product and they use a TikTok Shop (TTS) link, the link will automatically redirect to the original seller of the product. If it’s a paid partnership between the influencer and the company, it would work like any other promotion-the influencer would have a promo code, and after the promotion, the influencer would receive their cut as normal. Next, I’d make it so the user can set preferences for TTS. These preferences would include but are not limited to: • Whether or not the user wants to see TTS videos (they can turn it on/off) • How often the user sees TTS videos (they can select a max number of TTS ads they see on a daily basis) • Pages the user is following (if the user is following a specific page, TTS videos will be more likely to show up from that page) • The user’s own interests (you take a little quiz and it chooses which products to show you based on that quiz) • Influencer-promoted products vs small businesses marketing their own products (the user can choose to only see TTS videos where the business themselves are promoting a product)

I totally agree. This influencer marketing is insane. All these adds on repeat are crazy annoying. Tiktok won’t take my credit card

Brett you’re so right. I used to think that ads, although annoying, meant that the creators were just trying to make a living. Now I know those trendy ads must stop. But don’t worry, I’ll be sure to buy the quality products you sell everyday. Those are the only products that will actually make my life better.

I can put up with ads, the lying is what gets me. "You keep asking me about my glasses, click the link an used the discount code" Nobody is asking. Its just an ad being worded as if responding to comments.

I'm not offended by people trying to sell me things on social media. If I'm not interested, I keep scrolling. It's really about self-control and personal responsibility. And if it's coming up on your feed nonstop, it's just the algorithm working. That's your fault for watching those videos 😂

"deinfluencing" sounds so hilarious to me, as someone thats been on youtube pretty much since day one, because thats how it all started out as. more often than not, it was people trying to warn you on what NOT to buy, no one had a stake in your purchase even down to buying games on steam or not.

Part of the reason I am not on any social media. I got so sick of all the advertising. RU-vid is getting worse for it too especially the temu ads which is a horrendous company. Xxx

in France there's a law and influencers that are not forthcoming about making commercials can be fined and they have to acknowledge the condamnation in a public post. a famous one was fined 50 k€ last week.

I deleted TikTok a couple years ago so this is very entertaining for me to watch!

I've literally scrolled through my FYP and selected "I'm not interested in this" whenever I see any of the ads. My top score has been 13 in a row 😵 It's kind of helped to stop it showing me so many ads and getting more of the content I was seeing before this was introduced

My whole family moved to Quality over quantity/slow fashion/ (true, not trendy or extreme) minimalism when I was about 16 and it was one of the best things that has ever happened to us. When you have very few possessions you start to take more care with what you buy and how long it will last and that ultimately gives you more pride in those items and I personally feel more content by them

I went on TikTok once. Uninstalled it after 15min. Couldn't care less about it.

This is why I've dialed back extensively on my social media consumption. The influencer culture has just ruined everything, most notably Instagram. Before that app became more orientated toward influencers and reels, it was a photographer's paradise. As a pro photographer myself, my business enjoyed a decent amount of success on there. It was a fantastic place to network with other photographers, models, businesses, etc. These days if you're not some young teen girl dancing around in a skimpy bikini or trying to sell products, no one cares. Very sad to see. The app Vero is where most of the photographers fled to.

As much as I despise tiktok, it's just an annoying marketing tactic. I'm also annoyed at seeing ruff greens for the 100th time. Even though it is a good product, it's still repetitive, and it becomes annoying eventually. But I learned to deal with it and SKIP every time now. It just confuses me to see a video about repetitive advertising and every video that the daily wire uploads on RU-vid contains the same in video ads.

I already struggle with money due to an eye condition that makes me look high all the time but my family knows how to buy nice name brand for cheap but also I got sucked into fast fashion because it's cheap and I could shop without having to spend a lot but I'm to a point I can't keep money at all cause I'm buying way too much shit I don't need any it's causing my daughter to do the same. I went to Honduras recently. When I came back to America, it was almost nauseating, looking at how much we have available to us. It really opened my eyes to how much America is in a bubble.

If it’s free, you are the product. It was inevitable that this would happen. It’s the entire reason for any social media platform: data mining. I rarely open IG anymore because of the influencers and ads, I don’t have TikTok or facebook, and I’m quickly becoming annoyed with X because of the massive uptick in ads which are now inserted into the comment threads as well. Back in the pre internet days, I never looked at flyers, I cancelled my magazine subscriptions, I didn’t have cable …. I’ve actively avoided advertising as much as possible for most of my life. Don’t look at the ads, don’t buy the crap and it will diminish because it won’t be profitable for those crappy companies mass producing absolute garbage.

This may have been the one time you could've forgone the advert. Just a bit hypocritical lol. I'm very picky when I shop online; I do a ton of research, I debate purchases a lot, and I compare places, prices and quality. I also bought a few things thanks to TikTok influencing, and I only liked a couple of them and everything else was returned. Most of the marketing you see is just cheap garbage. I much prefer vintage shopping and finding high quality items for a good price. I also am a 'I want to make that' kind of person, so I DIY and sew a lot. And now that I'm on a more natural beauty train, I'm loving my bare nails, less makeup and more high quality skincare. (That snail mucin is amazing. So is my simple modern cup.) Also, no mention of RU-vid adding in products now?? I see it a lot and it's so annoying. I'm over everything being an advert.

Honestly I am mostly on tiktok and rarely see influencers selling products. I think it depends on what you watch as tiktok will show you more of that if you watch the videos for too long. Still love tiktok.

My husband and I have always gone out on trash night to rescue things that still have life. We just cant believe so many people throw away perfectly good things that can still be used. Apparently now we r trendy lol. I saw an "influencer" last Christmas saying she had such a unique idea to give her kid thrifted toys for Christmas because it was more sustainable ...been doing that all my life but it was because we grew up broke! lol

I personally scroll past every ad, and now that TikTok shop happened, I also scroll through every video with TT shop unless it's clearly a small business. I work in digital marketing, and one of the main things I emphasize to all my clients is that organic growth, and providing real value to your audience is far superior than spending a ton of money on bad ads, or paid, inauthentic promo.

So, Brett says we need to stop influencers promoting products while moments later promoting some products..

As a person who has never downloaded or used tiktok I don't feel this pain but I already see it enough everywhere else. RU-vid, Facebook and instagram are just as bad for it to. Absolutely every app somehow has found a way to market EVERYTHING!! Can't even download a simple game anymore without either having ads shoved down your throat or ingame flashy in your face popups telling you to buy this stupid fckn thing. It all needs to fuck off.
