I only found out when RiRi had a BASL performer for halftime show. First time in history. Apparently they always feature ASL.

Dear editor: When the Deaf person (e.g. Dr. McCaskill) is ‘speaking’, please keep the camera on HER, also, be sure the shot includes her hands. Of course, this goes for the other signing participants. Seeing her/his sign is a big part of the point.

Those who want as many people as possible to learn sign language, should put out videos that make it EASIER to learn sign language, NOT more difficult - whether the video is a Tutorial or not 🎯

@@christiant.1113 you missed the point. If someone is actually able to follow along with the BASL and by not focusing the camera on them properly, it's the same as randomly cutting out the sound in a video or tearing out pages from a book that you're trying to read.

@Ann_the Snowowl Of course folk should be polite and say "please" when making a request. But this does NOT negate the FACT that Sign Language Advocates should take Every Opportunity to give the Public Every Opportunity to learn Sign Language. And to be clear, Sign Language Advocates should do so WITHOUT having to be asked.

I’m so happy to see stories about Sign Language and the differences between ASL and BASL. I follow that girl on TikTok and her drive to make people aware is wonderful. Right now I’m studying to become an American Sign Language Interpreter and in class we actively explore the differences in signing based on race and culture. It’s so enlightening to learn and experience these differences and it drives me to one day become an interpreter that can communicate the way my client wants, and not make them switch so that I can understand. I am a guest in their culture and language, and I plan on being the best guest ever. Thank you so much for sharing this story and spreading this awareness!

I wonder how different ASL and BASL are. I know that BSL (British Sign Language) is completely different from ASL even though they are both English speaking countries, because they were developed independently from one another. But ASL, BASL were developed near each other, so seeing how different they are could indicate how much segregation kept the white and black populations apart. It is both beautiful and sad.

From what it looks, theyre very similar in grammar structure and general vocabulary. Of course, there are some differences for example the sign for towel and kiss are different as shown in the tiktok. I dont know enough about ASL to understand the full depth of their differences so take my word with a grain of salt.

THIS is why I get so frustrated with people who say race doesn’t matter and that we need to forget it. We were so segregated that even black deaf people have a separate culture from white people. There is a difference in our cultures, traditions, and dialects. I’m very proud of mine, and I’m proud of my dear brother. Happy black history month ☺️

i’m an ASL 2 student in highschool and this hasn’t been mentioned once.. i’m honestly disappointed in my school system as my ASL class has taught us a LOT of deaf white people but only one deaf black person (andrew foster)

Its very interesting, the code switch part. Because black people who can hear and talk also have their own "white voices" , the professional tones and word pronunciation, if you will. To think that this switch even extends to black deaf people is interesting and a little upsetting. Even black deaf people can sense the difference in the way black people speak, express themselves versus how whites do.

This is SO interesting, it never dawned on me that code switching was even a thing in the Deaf community, and it should have because I knew there were regional variations. It just never dawned on be that BASL was a thing. And here is me, a Black woman, learning ASL from a white guy on RU-vid.😄 I want to learn BASL now!🤩🤩🤩

I am a retired high school ASL teacher. I was also an interpreter. I think it is good to acknowledge race as long as “different values” don’t get attached to one race or another, or one dialect of a language or another. It’s all beautiful and we should all show respect and kindness to everyone and all “do our best” in life so there are no more “victims” of racism.

It’s interesting to see because i only ever saw German sign language as I grew up there and the ASL looks very different for one, but somehow BASL looks more similar to the German than the ASL. Still I cannot understand much sadly since they are too different around the world of course

WoW I have an older sister (whom I DO Not ever mention and this will be the only time in life I will But NeWays!) She teaches at one of the top schools for sing language in AZ and I have been around (one way or another) Sign language 🤟 most my life BuT never 👎 once had I ever Known of this! I noticed that there is sign language 🤟 for other countries and always wondered ¿WHY? And simply thinking 🤔 this was because of language but still always wondering why 🤔 this was Always thinking that This would be one way To be able to communicate easily with someone who knew how to sing but was from another country that on normal basis(meaning if we were to try to talk) we both would have absolutely nothing to worry about but 😳 WOW 😯 I honestly never knew! And honestly just wanted to Say THANK YOU FOR THIS! though it saddens my heart to say the least I am more enlightened by something I truly feel like I have been blindly naive

I'm deaf and use SEE/ASL mixture and live in the northwest. I never seen BASL before, very interesting. there are regional sign languages so BASL would be in the southeast? I hope they can keep BASL alive for a long time.

A deaf people gives you your sign name. When you spell your name out if you do t have a sign name. My name starts with an L and I make the L shape and and place it on my left cheek with my thumb. I have a beauty mark there so I place my thumb there and bounce it off my cheek and say my name. A deaf guy gave me my name.

There's actually a lot of different Sign languages in the United States: Black ASL, Sign Supplemented Speaking, English Word Order, the little fusion languages that pop up in immigrant communities, and then there's place by place differences that can get pretty wild. It's really cool to look into!

@@Yeti-xc4jg Oh, I will definitely look into it. I am ashamed because I actually took two semester-long classes in ASL and don't recall learning anything about other forms of ASL. Either my teacher (she was a CODA) didn't know or didn't feel the need to share, or I somehow simply forgot.

Some deafness is genetic. There are many multigenerational deaf families.

It's genetic - over half of the instances of deafness pre-adulthood have genetic causes. It's why families where everyone is Deaf exist.

Yes they just confirmed that when the said code switch. Look at sign language like any other language but more along the lines of like morse code or programming languages such as Python and JavaScript. With programming languages once you have the core of a major one you will see similarities yet the differences where as you more likely can understand it just not scribe with it right away because the way its written. Hopefully this makes sense.

Yes, i can see the difference. Although i disagree with the guy with the glasses. ASL is considered very, very expressive. They sign all big and even their faces say a lot. All deaf ppl do it, its pretty rare they sign in a robotically way lol. Maybe it's different where he lives, idk.

Deaf or not they were still black. They didn't want black kids in the same school as their white kids. Any disability, ot didn't matter, if you were black you went to a school only with blacks

That dr , that generalizing her idea , is bad , sometimes it is about the language , sometimes languages are hard so you avoid them , it is not always about the people , ,, there are many other factors , if there is a high benefit from learning the language , people will learn it , some will even learn it for the sake of fun , stop making things black and white and about race ....

Because much like spoken American English, there are differences in the way certain groups speak English around the US, particularly amongst black people and other minorities. You can attribute a difference in education and upbringing or simply SEGREGATION. With the Black American SL students learning off to the side with teachers who only know the language as they were taught. You will find dramatic differences in how the language is used/signed. My aunt has been deaf since she was 5 years old. I started learning American SL when I was in middle school. When I attempted to communicate with her she would laugh at me and tell me I was speaking as if I was white. which as an 11 yr old confused me. My cousin(her daugnter) taught me BASL which is what my aunt grew up learning in the 70’s. So see this video is very necessary bc it highlights just how different parts of American life are.
