Otomi is a small family of Indigenous languages from Mexico. The Otomi language of Santiago Tilapa is spoken by a few elderly people and is about to disappear, but it is the oldest form of Otomi.
My co worker is of Otomi decent. Her grandmother speaks it but she never taught the kids, so the grandkids never learned it either. It makes me sad for them.
I'm heartbroken watching this because I know that some of those words are not her native tongue. 'Pero, Ojala, Entonces,' the words that they used to be were lost to time and conquest.
I found out last year my husband who is from Querétaro is of Otomi descent. My ancestors are Gaelic from Scotland and Ireland. I did a DNA test on our eldest daughter and she is nearly half Otomi. I hope to learn Gaelic and Otomi and maybe when my kids are older they will be interested.
All that DNA mouth swab is nonsense and to mislead people down a rabbit hole , it isn't possible to tell from where one came from by mouth swab. To find true DNA where one comes from one would have to dig up their dead ancestors js
You are so lucky! There were a few words I picked up. But I wish I could learn the language. My daughter wants to learn it too. My dad is a descendant of the Otomi. He lived outside of Mexico City. In the hills was what I was told. Sadly they never talked much about it. It was never mentioned 😞.
@@juliahoff7158 you can only learn the language from the people since nobody teaches it anymore My parents are from Hidalgo Mexico en ixmiquilpan people stopped speaking since Spanish was necessary so it is probably gonna die For me Im the last generation to actually speak it
@@Kekoa552 I just found I also share otomi ancestry from Hidalgo. Please, please keep this language alive. I lived my entire life not knowing this side of my ancestry, and I want to keep my family’s origins alive. Don’t ever forget it 💕
Hello Gnome, yes, it is the present-day Otomi language that is closest to Colonial Otomi; basically, what Icelandic is to Old Norse if you compare it with other continental Scandinavian languages like Swedish or Norwegian...
