Join lovable professional tiler Roy Southby from roytiles.com as he takes you through how to re-tile and renovate your concrete swimming pool, and give your pool water an inviting new look.
How much does it cost to renovate or re-tile you concrete pool? Well the cost can be affordable if you do it yourself with the help of Roy Southby as your DIY pool tiling teacher. You could even tile your new pool as part of your pool installation.
Roy starts with the preparation of the pool surface, and a detailed run through of the tiling tools including the time-saving UltraSpreader, notched trowel, and tiling supplies needed for the completion of your project.
The tile installation is started by marking the wall of the pool at the water line, and using blue mosaic ceramic tiles, or you could choose the color of tile to suit your interior design choice.
Detailed techniques are explained in Roy's entertaining manner on how to remove pool lights, pool return 'eyeballs', as well as easy to follow methods for measuring and cutting tiles for pool steps.
When it comes to the floor, Roy uses his own UltraSpreader, available to purchase from roytiles.com/collections/tiling/products/ultra-spreader, shipping worldwide. This tool is a real time saver and allows the floor tiles to be laid in quick time. It allows the professional tiler to save time and money by completing the job quick time, and the DIY tiler to get a more professional job.
Some of the tile cutting processes are for experienced contractors and care should be taken by inexperienced people trying DIY tiling.

I'm a renderer with the same D13 Hitachi drill I've been using for 20+ years. It looks exact same as yours, down to the worn out mixing bit. Fantastic drill. Few new brushes and 5-6 new leads from the labourers breaking it from getting it wrapped around the mixing bit is all its needed.

You are a legend. Watched your videos of pool renovations multiple times. I just wanted to get your advice. I have Quartzon pool. Some supply specialists have indicated I need to chip out all the Quartzon, render again, moisture barrier and waterproof prior to tiling. If as in this video I just fix the dummy spots and adress any cracks is it a suitable finish to tile over the top (deals with hydrostatic pressures okay?).

Hello, Great video. I’ve got a 40+ yr concrete/plaster pool under renovation. The plaster is in really bad shape and I’m removing it all with hammer jack with flat chisel so it’s just taking the plaster off. Also taking off all waterline tile. How do I prep the slightly rough concrete for tile? Also it seems easier to use the 2 inch tiles when splicing/cutting is required. Mine is rectangular 2 ft shallow to 7 ft deep, and roughly 14ft wide x 38ft long with only 1 step. I’d really like to tile it myself but concerned about the concrete base prep work. Thanks for any feedback/suggestions. So you used skimmer for initial vertical run. Did you just take perpendicular of skimmer vertical line for floor chalk line? How did you determine floor centerline or does it really matter as long as it is close?

Roy, I am impressed. My grandfather was a Polish pool builder and built many of the pools in my neighborhood and, of course, I now have inherited one of the largest pool in my backyard. This pool is 20’ x 40’ and about 10’ deep hand dug and built in the early 50s in So. Cal. It’s solid but needs work. Do you think this DIY’er chick can tile the entire pool? I’ll need to pop out some old plaster that’s lifted but I’m guessing it’s all doable even for me! What do you think?

Don't you need to waterproof before tiling?
@KeithWhittingham
@KeithWhittingham 2 года назад
Hi Roy. Great video. I have a question for you. I have a pool with a poured concrete box structure. I covered the inside with a rubber coating so that I was sure it was waterproof. On top of that I glue 60x90 cm natural slate tiles. After.a year or two we started getting problems with efflorescence and tiles coming loose so I am going to have to redo the whole thing. 1/ I only left the glue (Ardex tile glue) a week or two before I filled so perhaps the glue didn't have enough time to cure? 2/ I called Ardex and they said that the glue should be OK but I'm not so sure 3/ I grouted with Ardex grout (which is v hard) unlike the old glue which seems powdery. I didn't put enough expansion joints which pushed the loosish tiles to pop off 4/ I noted the glue you use you added some white liquid as you mixed it - what was that? 5/ I empty the pool during the winter but the efflorescence is almost impossible to remove so it builds up. Do you think it's coming from the glue or the underlying concrete? What do you think?
@roysouthby1
@roysouthby1 2 года назад
Hi Kieth I’m afraid the problem you have is very common and it’s difficult to overcome. Google tells me that it’s caused by hard water but I don’t know. It seems like you’ve taken every precaution but still it happens. Once upon a time , let’s say 30 years ago the problem didn’t exist so , let’s look at how we tiled a pool back then. I booked into a motel a while ago and it had a pool which, once seeing it, I realised that I did it 40 years ago. It was in perfect condition and no loose tiles and no cracks and no calcification whatsoever. The glue I used was Kemgrip Super the same as today but I didn’t add Kemcrete to it as you saw me do in my video. The grout I used was my own concoction of sand and cement. I used one part foundry sand ( brushing sand ) and six parts cement. It was a beautiful creamy grout and I only offered the customer 2 choices , grey or white If they chose white then I’d use pure white cement. Nowadays the grout we buy has got all sort of chemicals in it so , GO FIGURE
@KeithWhittingham
@KeithWhittingham 2 года назад
@@roysouthby1 Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. We have hard water here but that's not the problem. I've got the same tiles elsewhere which are not under water from the main supply, just rain water. After thinking about it, I suspect that the cause is rain water running down behind the tiles before it gets below the pool water level - the majority of the deposits are on the wall that rises 1.5m above the water. I'm going to re-lay the tiles this spring and will direct rain water directly into the pool water. I'll also do some more research into glues and leave the glue and grout 6 weeks to cure. Thanks again.
