What do you think is the worst part of a tilt table test?

After they gave me medication through the IV line I started feeling so bad, when they started putting me in vertical position I started crying and fainted. Worse experience ever lol. Great video!

I’m scheduled for the tilt test for POTS dx and I’m dreading it. I can’t even shower without a chair because standing up for more than 10 minutes literally destroys me. I get nauseous and dizzy and if I don’t sit or lay down I’ll pass out. Thank you for this video!

I totally understand the dread! I usually try to reward myself with lots of downtime and a few treats (like music and movies) when I know a tilt table is unavoidable. I hope your appointment went/goes well and you got the diagnosis you were looking for! Much love 💜 - Alyssa

This video was so helpful. I finally saw a cardiologist last week to see if I might have pots because I do have symptoms, but the poor man’s tilt table test he did was nothing like you described and I didn’t experience symptoms, and I think that’s the reason why. He had me lay down, took my blood pressure immediately, and then had me stand right back up and took my blood pressure again. I always get nervous when testing also, and I have some mild social anxiety to boot, so I was not at all at my normal baseline when we did the test, and I wasn’t given time to lay down and get to my baseline either. It was really frustrating, and I didn’t realize that he had done the test wrong until afterward. This video really helped me understand how it should have been done and what the problems may have been. Thank you for making it.
@AlyssaLayne
@AlyssaLayne 3 года назад
I am so sorry to hear that your cardiologist did not let you get to an adequate baseline for the poor man's tilt. It does seem to be that as common as dysautonomia is being reported these days, many physicians are still vastly misinformed about the condition, properly testing for it, and treating it. I am glad though that I was able to provide you with some more information about it! I hope that in the interim you have been able to obtain a diagnosis and have a plan to move forward with treatment. I am hear if you have any other questions! Thank you so much for watching it, it to help improve understanding that I make the videos in the first place! So much 💜 - Alyssa

Thank you for your explanation! I have been struggling with symptoms similar to POTS and want some relief really bad so I can get back to the things I enjoy. One Doctor has already done a number of tests and has mentioned a treatment plan, but I have a Doctor that is not agreeing and wants to do more tests, including the tilt table. I'm just overwhelmed.

Nice short a to the point explanation of the test. Could you please guide on the exercise a patient is required to do being positive in the test?
@AlyssaLayne
@AlyssaLayne 3 года назад
Thank you for the question! A positive tilt test could mean a few different diagnoses depending on the exact protocol of the test and the patient's symptoms. The only one I am really familiar with is POTS, and exercise programs are a possible treatment strategy for POTS. The suggested exercise is focused on preventing/reversing deconditioning and prioritizes seated or horizontal cardio like rowing or swimming. There is still a lot of research being done on this protocol today; here is a website where you can find out more about the specific program and the latest research about it! www.dysautonomiainternational.org/page.php?ID=43 Of course, if you are looking to start an exercise program, you should really consult your doctor, so they can advise you on what is safe and ideal for your specific situation. - 💜 Alyssa

@AlyssaLayne
@AlyssaLayne 3 года назад
Hi nikki.n0cterm, I did not, but I can imagine that if you are already on medication that would be treating POTS (like beta-blockers or something else), your doctor might ask you to go off of them for a short while for your test. The best thing to do is to ask your cardiologist or the doctor who ordered the test if any of your medications could interfere with the test results. Best of luck with the test, and I hope you get all the answers you are looking for! - 💜Alyssa

@alyssa layne Hi, I am wondering if you would recommend not doing salt and electrolytes the day (or several days) before doing the tilt table test, as this improves symptoms?
@ingridgunby7862
@ingridgunby7862 2 года назад
Ps : I am doing the tilt test in three days, and uncertain on whether I should stop doing my electrolyte salt or not - my practitioner was not sure what was best, but want to do it right, to get accurate results. ✨
@AlyssaLayne
@AlyssaLayne 2 года назад
Hi Ingrid, I am sorry I am just now getting back to you and my advice is probably no longer helpful, but I would recommend going into a test feeling at your natural worst. That is to say, don't try to make yourself worse but also don't do anything that might mask your baseline experience. I also don't think that salt and electrolytes would make or break a diagnosis from a tilt table test, so either way, you were probably fine. I hope you have answers now and are doing well! - 💜 Alyssa

I passed out within 10 minutes of the test. The tech must've never had that happen cuz he looked freaked out. My BP plummeted dramatically. I felt horrible. I was not expecting to faint. I never passed out just by standing before. My faints are usually triggered by something. I was initially diagnosed with Neurocardiogenic syncope but I'm pretty sure I have PoTs.
@AlyssaLayne
@AlyssaLayne 3 года назад
Once I had a tech freak out during a tilt (this was when I was changing doctors, but we already knew I had POTS). My mom was with me, and the tech insisted that she come look at how dramatic my heart rate change was, like it was new information for us. We still think it was so strange because I was at a POTS specialist, so he should have been seeing something similar everyday 😅. I also find that my reactions on a tilt are more extreme than when I just stand up on my own because I shift around a lot and use my leg muscles to encourage the blood to return to my heart, but when I am moved on a table, I don't get to use any of my coping mechanisms. Maybe the same is true for you, and you have been doing a few coping mechanisms without even knowing it in your everyday life. Thank you so much for the comments! - 💜 Alyssa

So, is this to dx an issue or to solve an issue? I was once given an order for a tilt test but that order was to invert me & try to shake my inner ear fabrics/crystals back into place. I get motion sick & sometimes exercise induced vertigo..
@AlyssaLayne
@AlyssaLayne 2 года назад
Hi Jeremy, as far as I know, it is a diagnostic test, not a treatment. However, I have not looked into how a tilt table test might be used to treat inner ear conditions. It may very well be prescribed as a treatment for some conditions. Thanks for bringing up this interesting question! - 💜 Alyssa

I am so sorry to hear that you've had such bad experiences with an improperly administered tilt table test. My best advice is to keep trying. I would look online for recommendations for doctors in your region or that you could reasonably travel to (don't be afraid to travel - most of my doctors are hours away from me) who often treats and diagnoses POTS. Honestly, having an informed physician is everything. I think Facebook and Reddit might be good places to look for this information from other patients. I would also make sure that you have copies of the reports from the previous testing; bring them to your new appointment and be ready to tell your new doctor why you think the test was done improperly. I wish you all the best and I hope you get answers soon! Thanks so much for watching 💜 - Alyssa

I had mine this morning. Wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Horrible experience. Uncomfortable and extremely unpleasant. Didn’t feel faint at all. Had to stop test after 20 mins in upright position because discomfort was too much. You can hardly move and the restraints make breathing and movement difficult. All these tests I’ve had to have because I fainted for 3 seconds 15 months ago. A one off occurrence and doctors overreacting 😡

Tilt table test ... very important to diagnose my vasovagal syncope, but one of the most miserable feelings ever. I felt like I was stuck between, passing out, consciousness and vomiting for an eternity. That condition probably only lasted a few minutes, but seemed to last forever!

@Megaroo good luck with your test. I know in the chronic illness/disability community there can be a tendency to compare with others to see who has it worse, almost like a badge of honor. I want to encourage you to not let yourself fall into that trap. If you are having symptoms of any kind, you deserve answers, treatment, and help. Even if your sister has it worse doesn't mean you don't also deserve answers and treatment. Let her support you and help you get the best help possible. Best of luck! - 💜Alyssa

@AlyssaLayne
@AlyssaLayne 3 года назад
That sounds like a typical POTS reaction to me, but the most important diagnostic criteria for POTS is the heart rate changes. In some people their blood pressure stays the same, in others it goes up, and in some it drops. There is a lot of variability in what BP does during a tilt for patients with POTS. I hope you got some helpful answers from your test to make up for the fact that it made you feel miserable. Thanks for the great question! - 💜 Alyssa Gregory

Hi Steve, I did mention that there are some versions of the test that administer medication through an IV line, but I did not list the possible drugs as there can be many different variations on the test, and none of them are an essential part of what a tilt table test is. Hope this helps! - 💜 Alyssa
