In 2008 Tim Guiles built two tiny houses based on Jay Shafer's "WeeBee" design (Tumbleweed Tiny House Co.); one for himself and one for his son. He was so enthralled with tiny house living that one year later he formed a company, yesweecabins.com ....and hired an architect to help him with the design of his first product, an 8'x18' tiny house on a steel car trailer called "Elegant Simplicity." Tim and his partner, Kate, are now living in one of his tiny houses; he has sold another, and he is completing a third. George and Joan Packard, curiouslylocal.com ...spent a couple of hours filming and talking with Tim in early January, 2011, in his tiny house, perched on the brow of a high field on his Vermont land. Tim has a good positive attitude about his tiny house and living small. The video is pretty insightful and inspiring.

I am in love with this and have been dreaming about this day for the past two years..... very serious about wanting to visit and live about an hour north of where it is... sooo excited!!!

The entryway takes up valuable space. It's not about trying to cram a big house into a small space. It's about finding creative alternatives and learning to do without. For example, try a portable stove top and one-pot recipes. Recombine 7 tops and 7 pants to create 49 outfits. Convert all media to a handheld computer. It's a change from old habits to a new lifestyle.

A house is not a home until the person living in it is happy with it. Good job, I'm glad you found what's right for you :)

I love this design so much more than the Tumbleweeds! There are a few things I would change, as expected from individual personalities. Tim might have a potential customer.

I'm slowly downsizing - from 1600 sq ft to 550 sq ft and now am really interested in these tiny houses - my 550 sq ft house is actually the trailer I grew up in a 1959 Smoker mobile home. I own the land so think I MAY be able to build one of these on my lot and downsize again. I also have a real estate license and am actively looking for land in the Metro Denver area where I could build a tiny or cozy home communty. Great Video!!!! Keep up the good work!!!

this is why tiny houses aren't for everyone...people are different. Some people wouldn't be able to stand a house this small, and some people would absolutely love it.

I absolutely love your tiny homes....I've been studying Jays Tumbleweed homes for a few years now and preparing to build a home when the time is right. Trying to decide on a floor plan has been hard but after looking at the model you walked us through in this video seems perfect. What's the name of the floor plan and do you have a catalog with prices and floor plans to look at as I coudn't open your web page. I am so excited about living simply and know for a fact I too will never tire of the idea or the size. Kudos to you Mr Guiles.

I love this layout. What are the square footage of this house? Also, where can the instanteneous water heater be found? do you list the costs of this house somewhere? Great, great job!

LOL, Apparently you have not been paying attention, the tiny house movement is HUGE, just look at all the videos here on RU-vid. Besides, dirt is not cheap and it leaves a hole when you dig it out. Trees grow back, and they do not leave a hole in the forest when you cut them down. What would you plan to do with all those holes if lots of people decided to start using dirt? Also it would not work in places close to or below sea level, they would just fill up with water More choices is better

I like the whole idea!!!! of little houses. you can get cabin fever if you live in a big house with out any money. symptoms of cabin fever: restlessness, irrational frustration, forgetfulness, irritability, excessive sleeping, urge to go out side wether it be in the dark, or frezzing cold. I feel the symptoms decribed of cabin fever is of some one who is house poor with huge amounts of debt not cabin fever as described. funny how cabin fever has the same symptoms as stress.

Vertical and open storage tends to be claustrophobic. For spaciousness, avoid built-ins whenever possible. Store clothing and kitchen items in pull-out baskets beneath furniture. Store a demand hot water heater, portable stove top, stackable pans and dishes beneath a kitchen sink. Store towels and cosmetic baskets on narrow shelving over a toilet. Loved the ladder, multiple windows and dormers.

I thought the same thing, but I think he did it because of the snow. I have never lived where it snows but I imagine that you would need that buffer zone if you live where you are likely to get snowed in.

I love this living small idea. If I wasn't single, I couldn't imagine living with someone else in one these. Imagine if u want some alone time, or worse if u get in an arguement and need to chill out in another room for a while, well u cant! lol u can only move like 2 feet away.
@justgivemethetruth
@justgivemethetruth 11 лет назад
I agree, but how else would you do it though. You need an entrance so whether you put it inside or out it still takes up space,and you need to butt living room or kitchen up against something.

I am dreaming of building my own tiny house to retire in. I am a disabled woman on my own and this will be the only chance for me to own my own home. I also plan to buy some land and find a few other tiny house people to live there and help me raise all as much food as I can to support myself.

I definitely have too much stuff. I know that when I go to my trailer I enjoy the simplicity. Our house is quite small in relation to most. I'm content with what I have. I'm in 100% agreement. Need vs want is so hard for some. I own no jewelery, by choice. I don't buy Coach purses, or designer clothing, and I honestly want to shake sense into those who do buy them. Especially if they buy on credit. I hate debt. I've tried to avoid the trap of debt. Great house and enjoyed your talk.

What is the definition of need?... His tiny house is adorable, but there are things in there he doesn't need. It's interesting how people have the idea that they know what other people need, as opposed to their wants. All you need is shelter from the elements, clothing, food and water to survive, everything else is a want.

There comes a point where as you downsize, if you want to do things, you "thrash" if the space is too small or your needs are too big. For example I sell stuff online and need a place to stage and package items, not to mention store them. At home I devote a corner of my dining room ... there is no way I could that in one of these. Or if you have a hobby, or even want to exercise ... you might say go outside but one does not always want to face the elements like that.

LOL, you sound just like me, I don't do jewelry or furs or designer clothes. I would rather take a beating than shop for anything! Hubby and I are empty nesters now and I have been carting away stuff to Goodwill a little at a time. I have also been asking hubby for a tiny house.

Have you guys seen the one with a washer and dryer? The kitchen was top of the line stuff. It was gorgeous and really expensive. I wish I had the link so you can see it. It was one of the best tiny homes I've seen. But for 60k, ill stay where I'm at....lol

@Tamaresque I think the future will see cities of earthbag and/or geodesic structures popping up all over the place. Earthbag, Cob, and Geodesic ultimately follow the flow and curves of the earth and are pleasing to the eye. Most tiny homes are too tiny and minimalistic even for minimalists so they'll never be a viable option. The cost is too prohibitive for most. There are even the cool compressed earth blocks. You can build a 1500 sq home for 2 grand.
@rawmark
@rawmark 11 лет назад
Another thing. People have been making homes from dirt before you or I were born. Many of those homes still remain. In Devon, there are dozens of Cob structures. In Africa there are homes made of dirt that are over 100 years old. Trees don't grow back but we have plenty of dirt on this earth for everyone who wants to to build a home of earth. We don't have enough trees for everyone to build a tiny home though.
@eatingyumyum
@eatingyumyum 13 лет назад
@DannyWilsonsLaundry Thats a great goal. It will feel so good when you can do it all with out a loan. way to go!!! I still think with out some fun money you could possibly get a bit of cabin fever.
@rawmark
@rawmark 13 лет назад
This is why I'm building a rammed earth or an earthbag home. My needs are greater and I require more space. However, the house I build will, in essence, cost less. Why? Because the earth is free building material. Yes, these homes do have a place but there is such a thing as too small. I see our society evolving and going back to building with earth. That means we will see more homes made of cob, earthbags and rammed earth.
@rawmark
@rawmark 11 лет назад
Dirt is free. Also, bags can be free too if you check with the neighborhood farms. They will be glad to donate their poly bags that they get their feed in if you simply ask. I have a friend who build a 2,100 sf earthbag home. Everything was reclaimed or donated. How much did he spend in the end? It was about $500 to transport the wood. Show me a tiny home that cost so little to make? Also, the tiny home movement is small, not big. It's just big by your standards.
@sarahmagradcsulb
@sarahmagradcsulb 13 лет назад
@crewlla Luckily, the home is cheap enough (and lot rent is normally cheap enough, too) that you will have quite enough "fun money" to play around with. My husband and I were just talking about that last night. :)

Oh, I love the "idea" of it, I just think the long term does not work, and I am also unwilling to take the chance because even though it is less money than a regular house, if you cannot live in it long term, that is $20K wasted, to me. Economically if fits somewhere in between throwing money away on rent, house or room sharing. You might be able to find someone to buy it off you when you are done so you can recoup your costs,so there's a place for it. Best of luck to those who try.

Politicians with the help of lawyers are making the tiny house movement a difficult one. Buy one of these and no town will allow it, with very valid reasons, but not their true motives. It will likely end up in some rural place.

i think this guy has a good reasonable attitude about small houses ... some of them are just too small. I think the dismount off his bed is reasonable. The thing that gets me about these sleeping quarters is bugs. There is so little room that a spider or moth flying around, would be a major pain in the neck in such a small place. People just need more room than a jail cell, also if you want to do anything, like say, exercise, or some hobby ... you need some space.

Good idea, some people in this movement should live in Japan for a while. I think these are too tiny, and that a lot of them are going to end up being dumped leaving a lot of material used up. A regular house is worth fixing and can last for hundreds of years amortizing the resources and land used to make it ... I am not sure these can claim to do the same, realize that many of these videos are really ads for tiny house manufacturers trying to build a mystique 4 this lifestyle.

I don't know if it is a nervous habit or what-I wonder if he is even aware he is doing it. I had a professor in college who used to do this-in fact, he was tall, thin and slightly balding-he reminds me of this guy. It is really too bad because I did want to hear what he was saying about his tiny house!
