Tim’s modesty, lack of ego and basic humanity shines out. A remarkable, lovely man, and a very fine example of how to live a life of constant curiosity and intellectual generosity.
I'm sure many of you are aware, Tim Hunkin has a youtube channel, with remasters of "The Secret Life of Machines", and a new series, not unlike Adam Savage's deep-dives on tools and things for makers.
Having discovered that channel a little while back, and watching it semi-regularly of late, it's wild to see this video tape pull from, clearly, some years earlier than his latest uploads!
Remember this on the TV when I was a lot younger. Timmy is a very clever boy knows his stuff for sure. He never stops wanting to learn more very satisfying trying different ways of problem solving. It takes a lot of thought and trial and error. Thanks Ruth.
I love this. I was in London for a year back in 1993-94 and my husband gave me the challenge of finding the clock. Watching it live, in person, was a beautiful thing. I don't know if it's still working. It wasn't when I was there back in April of 2012.
In an alternate reality, I would love to have seen Tim Hunkin and Michael Wright in collaboration; a true battle of practical genius. Though, Tim's just a _little_ bit more modest than Michael Wright, which would've made it interesting. But Tim Hunkin helped shaped the person I became, Michael Wright didn't. He is a treasure to humanity. ❤
lol... his kit looked like some thrown together back pack straps, running the block on the side of the belt, and line behind him, thats some odd ball old shit, even for when this video was made.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?
Basil: Manuel! There’s too much butter on…those…trays… Manuel: que? Basil: I say there’s too much butter on….those….trays…. Manuel: oh, no Mr Faulty it’s ‘uno..dos…tres…’
The more you look at the design, the more likely the mechanism will appear self-evident by Actual Intelligence cause-effect and the natural occurring quantisation of logarithmic coordination metastability of Time Duration Timing Conception, ie the machine is tuned to the point where it emulates this Universal QM-TIME Completeness "Clock".
