Tim Keller on Rethinking His Beliefs About Suffering, What Cancer is Teaching Him, How Culture is Changing and the Future of the Church
Tim Keller shares some personal reflections about his recent battle with pancreatic cancer and how it's causing him to rethink his beliefs about God and suffering, drawing him even more deeply into truths he used to only partially understand. Tim also reflects on what a year of crisis has done to the church, and shares some thoughts on the future of the church, how culture has changed in the last year, and what needs to happen next.

I don’t agree with Tim Keller’s thinking on several subject matters that are important to me, but I do find him to be one of the “good ones” leading Christian community today. His grace and poise during what appears will be the last chapter of a beautiful life are a worthy testimony of what is good and right. God bless Tim Keller and his family.

If your keeping things together even if not greatly, even if nothing else is a “win”, that actually is a win. We need to give pastors a pat on the back for that. My wife said “if your church is still together through this, that’s a win”.

The faithful, balanced and honest ministry of leaders like you and Tim Keller is so important to keep contemporary Christians on an even keel during awful times, times when we’re feeling betrayed by big names, feeling cynical, unbalanced. Prayers for healing, focus, encouragement but mostly faithfulness for Pastor Keller.

Many students with previously impeccable academic records are failing, and only very, very few students have improved their grades from when they were physically in class. Rates of depression are much higher. Rates of anxiety are much higher. Please pray for the youth of our great nation.

Good to see a program on the late Tim Keller. I still remember that review on Yelp about Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Nothing I've ever heard or read about Redeemer has ever been proven more accurate or cogent. Excerpts edited for brevity and clarity: COMMENT: I have been to Redeemer West side and East side services. I still go from time to time. I used to take part in several of the volunteer opportunities at Redeemer. So why only 3 stars? Because a church is more than just a pastor. Now there is no perfect church. But there are some serious things lacking here: First of all, there is no prayer meeting or focus on corporate prayer for the entire church. The very basic part of the Christian faith that Jesus himself said with his own lips was Matthew 21:13. "It is written," He said to them, "'My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers." Prayer is just talking to God, it doesn't require any special talent, skill or training. So the lack of prayer at this church is very alarming to me. And I haven't heard anyone speak of repentance at Redeemer --- ever. Again, I have listened to hundreds of sermons and been to at least a hundred services both on the West and East sides. The church ministries are called "ministries" but are run like any secular organization. Redeemer Presbyterian is run like a business, a well-oiled corporate machine, and not a church. The other 2 things which are cultural and not spiritual but are off-putting to me are: 1. Most of the members and regular visitors to Redeemer are transplants, not New Yorkers, so the church is a large city church but run like a small town church where there are very few native New Yorkers. It seems most of the members are not established in the city and are just passing through. 2. The other is that it seems the majority of the congregation is looking for a spouse, and very aggressively. When you walk in, the first thing people do is look at your hand for a ring, and then are bold enough to ask if it is a wedding ring. That experience is not unique to me, but to all of the guests I bring here. In addition, in any volunteer group I have been to, the small talk from both men and women centered around trying to find a spouse. Then the few married people were usually complaining about their marriages. The pastor knows about this, and does see it as a problem because he addresses it in his sermons. But people don't seem to listen. It is like they are all living in 1950's rural America. One other major problem I have with the church is that it is mostly white and Asian. I believe the reason is that the congregation ---- and this is not the pastoral team's fault --- seems to be focused on their careers and making money, and not on God at all. God is there to bless their agendas; this is how they seem to operate. I believe this is true for a few reasons. One, the culture of the church and focus of the congregation seems to be on Whites and Asians who make good money and have high-end careers, rather than on God. A huge basic tenet of the Christian faith is Death to Self. But at Redeemer, when you hear testimonies approved by the pastoral staff, they usually start with the person's professional credentials. I do not see any Death to Self there, but actually the opposite: It's "Look at what I can do for God because of my high income and education." It is not wrong to have a high income or education as a Christian. But the focus (at Redeemer) is wrong. So for these reasons, I think the church is best for those who are not Christians yet but are seekers of God, or those established in the faith already. It is not good in my opinion for the average believer looking for a home church. The church in my opinion is more intellectual than spiritual.

I agree and disagree with one thing that Tim said. I agree that zoom church is not great and not as good as an in person church experience. But I don’t agree that sermons online have little value. Tim Keller has been instrumental in my path to God, and that’s because I watch his old sermons on RU-vid alone late at night. I love being able to rewind and hear what he says over again. So for people who want to understand God’s word on their own time in their own way, online sermons are great. But this is a different experience than going to church. It’s more like reading a book alone, but in an audio/video form.

The title of this podcast; I watched it all... it is the Church that changes the culture & not the other way around. This is one of the major problems that the Church has self induced upon itself of issues they have... GOD, His word & biblical principles will never be lived by (Christ-like) if it isn't taught, acted upon & not viewed as a popularity contest. Suffering is a major prerequisite in regards to Christianity; responsibility & accountability must be taught by the Church as well as their pastors... shepherds!

Great interview and I love so much about Timothy Keller’s books and sermons. A true treasure. But I disagree with his statement about his sickness, “why God is giving this to me.” I don’t know if he was making a facetious or a theological statement, but I see no scriptural evidence under the new covenant for God putting sickness on his children to teach them something. If that were true, Jesus and his apostles (1st century and current followers) would need to ask forgiveness for commanding away a sickness God imposed. The enemy brings sickness and death. We are commanded to pray against it, and now, finally under the new covenant, we are not helpless. Our prayers are powerful and effective. But this is a war and there are casualties. The world is confused by our own inconsistency on this in the church. God is not the one dishing out cancer.
@lakitawright5012

Did God give him this sickness or allow it? Paul had what many theologians to be an illness when he spoke of a thorn in his side and though Christ can heal all things, there are things he allows in our lives to show Himself strong. If Tim is miraculously healed from this, will you say God did or didn’t have a hand in it?

@@lakitawright5012 Paul’s thorn in the flesh wasn’t a sickness. Look up thorns in the flesh in the Old Testament. These thorns are always people. One of the things not being said about the state of worship today is if the resurrection is true then our lives are eternal. That means not only our identity is in Christ, but also our hope is in Christ. And that knowledge gives us the faith and courage to persevere by being the light of Jesus in a dark world and sharing the good news of the gospel. There is no longer any fear in taking risks to accomplish this, because we have eternity to see it through. Walk in the light. Ephesians 5:13. 😃

The structure of many churches tended to fail to foster interpersonal relationships in meetings. There was and is little face to face interaction, encouragement, and accountability. 2. There was a lack of equipping or catathesis in the church but online training for groups can improves it. 3. Many people receive the broadcast in groups.

I see many church leaders and others comparing the current ideology of critical race theory against the Bible and exposing the problems with the theory. So I’m not sure I agree with Tim that there are not many spiritual leaders doing this. At the same time there are many many spiritual leaders who have fallen prey to the new ideology and are re-forming what they believe the Bible says to fit the social narrative. This is much more scary to me. I do agree with Tim though that we need to meet people where they are and compare what they are thinking against what the Bible really says. The Bible never changes but the ideologies and beliefs in any given decade certainly do. I think the importance of catechism style is that they codify a proper interpretation with the Bible is saying to remove any ambiguity. That is still good.

But I realize something if God is loving I do believe that no good God would make you suffer like I suffered I don't think God ever intended us to suffer and I don't really necessarily believe in we're falling I mean I know the Bible says that but I think a lot of our what sin is is not loving one another it's how we treat each other in our own egos that's the real battle pride. It reminds me of the verse what good father would give his son a stone when he asked for a loaf of bread. The culture is influencing the Church rather than the Church needs to influence the culture. The culture is growing worse because, sin cannot be improved upon. We live in modern day Crete. A godless and fallen world. If ministries would only preach the word of God unadulterated then many more people would respond to the true gospel and get saved. 1 Timothy 4: 1-16. The culture and false delusions like climate change and utopian society are just that, strong delusions. Discernment is key without turning discernment into iniquity. The Lord bless.

Keller's characterization of progressives as merely those who want to play the victim is perplexing given he is sometimes criticized for being a more progressive Christian. One of the problems in attracting younger people is this anti-progressive attitude from Christians who ought to be in the forefront of supporting working and poor folks which is the actual progressive agenda. There are plenty of people amongst the religious right who play victim as well, so really not a great statement on his part.

In my option the "church" went apostate during the time of Constantine and has not been led by the Holy Spirit since, which is why it has no power or authority to rebuke all the false prophets. Mixing the holy with the profane was the practice of the Nicolaitans which Christ Himself said He hated (Revelation 2:6) and warned the church in Pergamum to repent from (Revelation 2:15-16). The better question is why does the Christian church observe these pagan holidays in favor or the Feasts and Festivals of the Lord in the first place. GOD does NOT give you cancer or a heart attack. That is a consequence of sin, the wagers of sin is death. God did NOT give you cancer as oppose to a heart attack because He wanted to give you focus because you were not holy enough to die of a heart attack.

When Hebrew’s says you have a God, yea the Trinity is false that’s why it didn’t say that and a Trinitarian naturally did. You can guarantee the church after Christ died and rose were not trinitarians

i reject presbyterianism because the west minster confession is flawed in saying "the ten commandments are binding for believers" contradicting the teachings of the apostle paul and his revelation of the mystery of the dispensation of Grace which was not previously known. its for gentiles. "apart from the law sin is dead" "the strength of sin is the law" "the law of the spirit of life in Christ jesus set us free from the law of sin and death" "we died to law through the body of Christ" "It is for freedom that Christ set us free" we are not BOUND we are free in Christ and given a new nature and "the grace of God teaches us to say no to ungodliness, in this present age" TO BE BIBLICALLY CHARISMATIC is to be GRACEMATIC.......charis( GRACE) is the root for charisma. in grace we get gifts of the holy spirit and a power from God and inside guide to holiness. the spirit of God is the deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.

Please preach the full gospel of Christ and make people understand we are all dead in our sins and need to be saved for the sins. The gate is very narrow only few would find it. Please don't use any gimmicks. Please preach the gospel and live it, the young who are called and predestined would respond to the truth of the gospel. Preach Christ Crucified stop this identity crap in the Church.

“God lost a son.” ?? This makes no sense to me. If anything Mary lost a son. Why doesn’t anyone speak of a mother loosing her son by means of essentially assisted suicide or by his “god”father that planned it that way? To loose a child is vastly worse than dying in ones 70’s. Yahweh just brought him/himself back to his eternal house after a short stint at an Earth human camp. It was always Yahweh’s plan to find the gruesome death and dripping blood of the ultimate clean animal satisfactorily for his apparent flawed creation. Why does this God get to have it both ways? Again, it makes no sense. Of course, sympathy to the Keller family. This is probably the wrong venue to say this but I’m sorry, how can Christianity be true in light of a first humans Adam/Eve being fictional? I guess Tim does finally provide the caveat of “if this, then.....true...”. The resurrection of Jesus is as unbelievable and ineffective as that of Lazarus and/or the many saints that too rose from the dead in Matthew.

I have loved Tim Keller sermons for almost 2 decades. Unfortunately he seems to have lost his way with regards to his embracing of Marxist ideology. It’s sad to see that in this interview that he sees as one one of the most important things to be concerned with is that the rich have assets and the poor don’t. This is a problem yes but not worthy of your last dying days. He also has bizarrely embraced applying CRT to the church in a recent video. This is, like Marxism a gospel of grievance. He seems to miss the verse in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 where it states that Gods word is sufficient for ALL Christian training. Why in the world would he promote CRT with this? Here’s what I think happens when one uses CRT. You try to look at someone’s life through their eyes so much you forget that the other person may be deceived and you fall to that same deception because you lost track of the fact that all views are not equal. Some are not based on truth.

Mark. I’m befuddled also. How can such a intelligent Bible scholar and preacher be so right about so much Then Be so wrong in his final days CRT. POOR VS RICH WHAT? Are u kidding Tim? The poor and the rich are with us forever. So is racism How bout sticking to the Gospel good news Where sinners escape damnation At Christs expense? That said. I love Tim so much. A most beloved preacher to me I’ll just gloss over his newly found Marxist trash

The title should be, "How the church is caving to culture and abandoning God's word." Keller has and is leaning on man's wisdom and not the Bible. This is very sad. It is not only here but in many circles in the church today. This is the church of Laodicea.

I'm glad there are more and more people who realize Tim Keller preaches a false gospel and are now rejecting his Marxist theology. Keller hid his anti-gospel message for a long time but now he can't help himself. His lie of making charity into a justice issue by insisting the poor have a claim on the wealth of others turns the true Gospel on its head. Instead of charity being a picture of God's grace to us, Keller turns charity into something we owe the poor. This paints the picture of the Gospel being something God owes us. Keller promotes the sin of partiality when he preaches the lies of systemic racism and white privilege. By insisting whites benefit to the tune of $1,000,000 because of their skin color and they received that benefit from people who committed injustice, therefore white people owe non-white people, Keller again turns the Gospel on its head. Instead of allowing Christ to impute His righteousness onto whites, Keller imputes the sins of others onto whites. Keller preaches a false gospel. Paul said in Galatians 1:8 that if anyone preaches a different gospel, let him be accursed. This Scripture applies to Tim Keller.

What is your denominational background? I was born and raised Presbyterian but their involvement in the World Council of Churches, which supported the pro-Cuba guerrilla movement in El Salvador turned me against them. I have been in an interdenominational church where we only accept Jesus as Lord and Savior; we don’t have to give up our traditions. As I listened to Dr. Keller during the plandemic, I realized I am still a Presbyterian. He has so many traditional and conservative positions. As he faces death, he may just be overly sympathetic with those who suffer.

@@randomuser6306 Well right wing extremists are alt right leaning toward a fascist understanding of race supremacy. Those in Europe are more advanced with white nation worship. If they took over society, they will institute a corporate state, state church and seperation of races. Fascist leaning groups in the US are Boogaloo, Proud Boys and some militia groups. As far as BLM, the run of the mill are civil rights activists, but the international wing has some Marxist influence. Antifa is an ideology, mainly anarchists that are violent. They stole an honorable definition of anti fascist which middle of the road, liberal and democracy supporting conservatives are for. My parents endured Mussolini and Hitler in Europe, watching their Jewish neighbors being shipped to death camps. Yes sir, I'm anti fascist and proud of it. I'm also anti communist. As far as the USA evangelical church, their support for Trump who has given encouragement to racist, extremists groups, is telling. When Trump won, a Greek Nazi group Golden Dawn was thrilled. They called him Golden Don. Even KKK was elated here in the states.
