What a joy to watch! Unlike some, I appreciated both men explaining what was being filmed. There are lots of photos and videos that just show 'pretty' shots but for us truly interested in learning more, it's equally important to be able to read or listen to what we see. It definitely enhances our enjoyment of the film. I wondered too about the pins they had on until I saw that one male bird displaying. :) Cool pin!

Truly incredible. Words really can't express how amazing and wonderful these birds are. I do wonder why the female birds care so much that the males would have such extreme and unique adaptations.

I was lucky enough to travel to West Papua, New Guinea to Scuba Dive the Raja Ampat Islands January, 2016. That was an incredible experience in itself. One of my goals was to photograph the Red Bird of Paradise. It was in Besir that we anchored and procured a guide from the village to take us to a place high up in the forest before sunrise to see this spectacular bird. Unfortunately the bird was back lit and pretty far away and no female came. So, this one opportunity that resulted in mediocre photos even though I used a Canon 70D and a 300mm telephoto lens, the backlight skunked me. I certainly appreciate the efforts and research it took to take these amazing photos and video. I loved watching this video and learning a few facts about this bird and other majestic Birds of Paradise.

The most intriguing question for me is whether or not these birds can distinguish colors as we know them and/or additional colors outside our visual range. This is a very comprehensive well thought out study.
@JOHN----DOE
@JOHN----DOE 6 лет назад
Some birds certainly see colors we don't. Take a budgie into the closet, shine a black light on him, and the yellow and purple areas glow like phosphorescence. The female budgies go for the ones with the most yellow and purple on their heads.

Just simply the most beautiful birds I've ever seen--think what our world might have possibly evolved into if human males spent tons of time simply trying to catch our (the human female's) eye. Maybe no wars, maybe peace on earth for all millennia? Thank You for all the time and hard work over the 8 years spent on this project to Tim Laman and Ed Scholes! and also to the native people who helped them attain their ultimate goal--all 39! species documented doing their various dances on film!!
