His dad MLB Player Tug McGraw and the relief pitcher who threw the strike out that won the Phillies the 1980 World Series, had been diagnosed with brain cancer ultimately dying when Tim came out with this song. Which is why this song was so important to him.

@@MrLindy823 Yep. When Tug saw Tim for the first time he said no need for DNA because they looked so much alike. I met Tug at Tim's concert in Philly ( which of course you know is where Tug played baseball) I walked right up to Tug and he was so nice. I had Tim's tshirt in my hand and I asked if he would sign. Something happened and he walked away and I was like ok...guess not LOL A moment later I felt someone tap my shoulder and I turned around and it was Tug. He was like where did ya go? I thought you were following me over to the table so I could sign your shirt. LOL Just the nicest guy. He died right after my dad....I only met my dad a handful of times. He left when I was 4 and this song just got to me. Sorry for the long comment. LOL I just wanted to share.Stupid me washed the shirt

I've been fighting throat cancer for the last 3 years...so I know what it's like to hear that kind of news...to face mortality. Unfortunately, I've been so sick that I couldn't go sky diving, Rocky Mountain climbing or went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu, but I have tried to love deeper, speak sweeter, give forgiveness I'd been denying. It's not always easy...I have my days where I'm angry, sad, scared..where I've been so tired of fighting that I wanted to give up....but I'm NOT going to let this beat me! It WON'T win! Moral of the story (and song)...don't wait until the day you hear that kind of news to live life...to love with all you have...do it now & do it every day!

To be a club member of the Cancer club is a special membership. I had stage 3b lung cancer six years ago. This song nails it to perfection. But the song is more than just about dying from cancer. It tells ALL of us to sit, stop, and reflect on being the best person you can be, because the reality is... we are all dying. Every one of us has a date with destiny. Live your life to the fullest, and be kind to one another along the way.

When I was around 11 I was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder ( classified as a progressive incurable blood cancer) and was told I wouldn’t make it to 30 and I’m 31 and going strong .... I accepted death back then and it was truely hard but I’ve always loved the saying “ death is a tax we all will pay to live” no one knows when there time is up ... every day is a gift ... every moment and every person ... don’t let the fear of death stop you from living 🥰😍

New to your channel. I love Tim McGraw. This is by far one of my favorite songs of his. I've seen him in concert once and loved it. Would I want to know I'm dying? To understand my decision, allow me to give you some context. I used to be a secretary in a hospital in Palliative Care and in Oncology (cancer)/Internal medicine. I saw a lot of death. Young, old, expected, unexpected, cancer, AIDS and everything in between. I've lost family and friends. Some were old, some still in school, some knew, some didn't. A few even died in their sleep. When I think about them, about the patients and their families. Some left family, some had no family, and a few were estranged from their families. Only regrets people ever expressed were to not make amends, to not let people know how they felt. If it was me, no matter what I was dying from, I most certainly would want to know. I'd want the time to spend with those who meant the most to me. To make amends if need be. To forgive others. I do my best to live like I'm dying. I do my best to always say nice, sweet positive things to people. If I can't, then I don't say anything. I move forward. I've loved this song since it came out and I love it as much now. Sometimes I wonder why I'm here and somebody else isn't. Why this friend or family member are gone. I know those who died too soon would give anything for one more day. I use that to remind me to live my life to the fullest.

I don’t listen to a lot of country, but this is one of my songs I have on a playlist dedicated to my Mom’s memory along with several others. As far as knowing, I definitely think after my experience with losing my Mom, I was glad we had a “pre-warning” and had 20 months to live the best we could together, especially considering that our relationship had been strained many times throughout before. It was a gift of time for us to make amends. Kind of like this song references in the “live like you were dying”, so many people don’t do so many things they probably would if they knew their time was limited. Me being through cancer myself, I know this same feeling. I always speak as truthfully as I can and fear nothing, like I used to. One really good country song I like if you haven’t checked it out is “Humble and Kind” also by Tim McGraw. ✌️

This song touches home with me. I've always loved it but makes me cry Everytime I hear it! 10 yrs ago I was given 10yrs to live. Hardly anyone knows this. But last year my blood work was not good. So I didn't go back I don't want to be given a time line of when it's my time. Only God knows when it's my time. So within those 10yrs I have had major car wreck where a fence post went thru windshield and stopped 1/2 inch from my head, major heart break, house burn, another heart break, and not knowing WHY AM I STILL HERE?? Still have yet to find out that answer, BUT IM HERE. I don't want modern medicine which is required for your liver. I push myself every day to get up go to work (which is very physical) but I think that's what keeps me going. I'm not gonna live by that date and time stamp any longer, I REFUSE TO!! This is my life and I have became VERY HUMBLE AND GREATFUL FOR WHAT I DO HAVE AND FOR ANOTHER DAY!! 🤔🥺🙃😉

Commenting at the 4:00 mark...don't know yet what is said in the rest of the video. I lived this song...my dad was in his early 40's when he got the news and passed at 49. I was 18 when he died. I live every day with the same mindset you have, "I don't want to know, let me live my life". 7 years ago, I was in a head-on collision with a city bus that sent me to the hospital in an ambulance, I managed to walk away with some airbag burns on my face and a bruised retina. My 36th birthday is coming up pretty quick and I am still making the most of the "here and now". Life can turn on you in an instant, make the most of it while its here.
