I live a couple miles outside Colorado Springs city limits. I've lived in the area since transferring here for a job in the 80's. The Christian right invaded this town about that same time (Focus on the Family etc), and they have pretty much ruined it. I say this as someone who attends a Christian church and has done so for 70+ years. These people are not Christian. They're all about condemning others and worrying about their gun rights. I was on Nextdoor yesterday and saw this topic being discussed - mostly in a "this is horrible" vein. But some people posted that the shooter was doing God's work. These are horrible people, and they have a loud voice here. I believe it's the only large city in Colorado who still voted for Trump in 2020. Other than one missing fact, you pretty much got it right in your news story. The missing fact or assertion is that the police did try to remove his gun, but his family were not cooperative. I don't know if this is true, or if it's even an excuse if true. Facts are sketchy at the moment.
I was impressed by the way the officials handled this at the press conference yesterday. With compassion and consideration instead of the appalling hate filled rhetoric spouted by the Christian right and GOP. I've never had an LGBTQ be inappropriate or any so called 'grooming' but I have seen plenty of that done by pedophiles and they're usually in the class of older white men who can be hiding under a disguise of respectability. I know I'm off topic but really appreciated your comment and had to get this off my chest.
@@joyflavell7385 Heterosexual men have been grooming young girls FOREVER. Catholic priests have been raping young boys FOREVER. LGBTQ do not....they seek their own tribe...just like the rest of us. The hate for these people is disgusting, heartbreaking and infuriating.
@@ThreadCityDeanF simply believing in faith should not be considered a crime. I don’t agree with those that use faith to discriminate against others, just saying not everyone in a certain faith are against any groups whatsoever. You can’t just lump everyone together, that’s just lazy and ignorant. I’m not saying there aren’t some people in these groups that are against certain groups, but certainly not every single individual.

@@elizabeth_777I'm honestly asking. Is posting the rainbow necessary to pay respect to someone who has passed away? They were an entire human existence, not just a sexual orientation
I'm truly hoping to see a victim's family sue the sheriff's department for not enforcing the law or protecting the community. Criminal behavior in the extreme. He should resign.
@@mandatethis8236 Where did I say I wished to defund the police? Did I say that? I have several members of my family who are or were police officers. I fully understand the sacrifices that are made in the name of community protection. And that is my point. The sheriff is charged with protecting the community. He let that duty be ignored in favor of politics and now 23 people have paid the price for his lack of vision. Red flag laws are put in place to prevent exactly this type of incident. He helped pave the way for these people's death. No amount of smoke, woke or otherwise, will hide that.
@@00bankz24 Non binary btw? Not a clue. Is it simply impossible for you to see that we legislate laws for a purpose? The Red Flag laws primary purpose is to disarm those who show a clear and present danger to others. That is their objective. When law enforcement does not back up those laws with relevant action, this is the outcome. Are you so much on masculine overdrive that you are incapable of seeing the purpose of these laws? Or are you just plain stupid?
@@numba1killa886 Your name tells me all I need to know about your brain capacity. Being a member of the current death cult who sees no restriction or gun control that they could support to protect innocent civilians, I don't expect you to understand the purpose of red flag laws or the importance of their enforcement. Please show me your info about either party closing down mental institutions, other than Reagan did to federally funded mental health facilities in the 80's. You're completely blowing smoke because you value gun rights over the rights of innocent civilians to live their lives. This has nothing to do with telepathic police officers. This sheriff ignored the state-mandated red flag law and these people paid with their lives. That's the bottom line. The other bottom line is you could care less about protecting your communities. You'd rather see people mowed down than bow to one small inkling of gun control. That's why you are a member of the death cult. Congratulations. And I'm a gun owner.
What is going on with those people? Are they so insecure in themselves, that they cannot accept others but clones of themselves? Rainbows ... a painting in the sky of nature
Whoever refused to enforce the red flag law, aka the SHERIFF, needs to be held legally accountable. County officials cannot overrule state law. They should also face repercussions if they were involved.
Why did the District Attorney choose not to prosecute when dude threatened to bomb his Mom's house? Why were relevant databases not updated to flag this individual and prevent his acquisition of firearms?
@@joyflavell7385 "Federal law requires background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for guns sold through licensed firearm dealers, which account for 78% of all gun sales in the United States. Background checks include criminal and mental health history, dishonorable military discharges, unlawful immigration status, an open warrant, a documented history of domestic violence, and drug use". "Proposals for UNIVERSAL background checks would require almost ALL firearms transactions in the United States to be recorded and go through the same National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), thus closing what is sometimes called the private sale exemption for unlicensed "dealers". Universal background checks are not required by U.S. federal law, but at least 22 states and the District of Columbia currently require background checks for at least SOME private sales of firearms" . "To ascertain whether an applicant should be disqualified from owning a gun, the FBI draws from three databases. The Interstate Identification Index is a giant repository of criminal convictions used by an array of law enforcement agencies for a range of purposes. The National Crime Information Center, or NCIC, is an “electronic clearinghouse” of other criminal justice records, including protective orders and disposition records. Finally, there’s the NICS Indices, which include records contributed by federal, state and local agencies specifically flagging individuals prohibited from buying a gun". IMPORTANT AND RELEVANT .. "Mental health records present a particular problem. The only way a history of involuntary psychiatric confinement or a judge’s ruling of mental incompetence will show up on a gun background check is if a state makes the effort to submit it to the NICS Indices - those records aren’t meant for the other two databases. The Virginia Tech massacre, committed by a gunman whose history of severe psychiatric illness had not been forwarded to the FBI, exposed shortfalls in mental health reporting to the NICS Indices. Several states have since made progress in correcting those omissions, but many others have remained resistant, citing PRIVACY LAWS". "In addition, the bar for denying someone on mental health grounds is very high, requiring that a person has been declared unsound or has been involuntarily confined to a psychiatric institution by a court or other authority. Fewer than 43,000 people have been denied under this criterion over the last 21 years".
@@joyflavell7385 Camerota then asked, “I mean, one of the problems - and I think we saw this in the Highland Park shooting case, as well, in Illinois - is that if it relies on the family to press charges, if it relies on the family to say that this person needs to go to prison, it doesn’t work. And so, Senator, what’s the solution for protecting this community in your state?” Hickenlooper answered, “I think that we have to set a new and higher level for red flag laws, where you have to have some institutional framework by which the community can - if someone has clearly demonstrated that they are liable to go off the rails…we have to make sure people like that don’t have access to guns, and if they do have guns, we take them away.”
@@omi_god that’s up to prosecutors to go after him for that. They declined charges on him for that incident. If they would have charged him and possibly convicted him then he could have been flagged by FBI trying to purchase a firearm.
If I understand this right, the Sheriff looked the other way instead of applying the red-flag law. That is a negligent act. I hope one of the family members of the deceased, once they are able to, stands up to that negligence.
Help me out here, please. I'm confused about this, and have been for years!!! HOW do you go from not approving someone's lifestyle, race, sexual orientation, whatever, to giving yourself permission to MURDER the person or people you disapprove??? That's quite a leap, isn't it? How can that happen? What is that thought process? I really hate for drivers to run stop signs or speed, but it has never occurred to me that murdering one of those drivers is an option. There are many things that we don't approve or like, but we don't have the authority to mete out punishment of any kind, and certainly not capital punishment!!! JUST STOP IT, PEOPLE!!
Well, there are actually people out there that would murder someone who went through a stop sign, or cut them off… There are all sorts of weirdos out there.

I was listening to this program today while driving-and this comment is related to the segment in which Maya Wiley appeared. In my opinion, there is a nuance of words in the advocacy for equality for all gender identities. If it is referred to as a battle or a war, minds go to whatever one thinks of as war. There are sides, there is a winner and a looser, it is one against another. And if it is referred to as advocacy, I think it is less combative. I have thought that about elections. Always referred to as a battle. I wonder how the process would change if we were advocating for rather than fighting the battle. How would it shift the dialogue?
You shouldn’t have to be your hero anywhere. If one has to be a “hero” that means one had to deal with equally opposite people. It’s the hero who has the courage to deal with those people. Unfortunately, until the world is full of just regular every day decent people there will always be both.
Lawsuit! Make these government officials accountable for risking the lives of citizens in their county! Take it up the hierarchy. Take it to the Governor’s office and the legislature!

So the people who keep talking about mental health and red flags to help keep us safe are in actual opposition of this help, ok, I guess we just need to go from work to home and stop spending extra

The problem of these “red flag” laws is that they are written without the option of due process. This is why local law enforcement is reluctant to enforce them.
So the rights of those who fall under the red flag laws to own weapons deisgned for war is more important than protecting the lives of innocent people?
How is the Sheriff of El Paso County, CO allowed to willfully neglect enforcing the laws of his state?!? Is there an entity that has authority over these local government agencies? The statement about right wing media consumption and individuals who commit violent hate crimes was moving to say the least. Madam Senator, you are an inspirational woman of strength and integrity. I hope the young ladies coming of age look to you as a model to emulate. Your confidence and conviction is EXACTLY what our society needs at this moment. If only we could clone you 1,000 times and have y’all all over the most powerful positions of our government!!! All the police making statements about how awful the incident was at press conferences is disingenuous at best and flat out lies at worst. Shame on that police community. They have laws in place that could have prevented that savage slaughter. Disgusting. I hope they get sued to within an inch of their lives for their callous disregard of the law and citizen's lives and wellbeing.
Your simplistic view of this tragedy and your perception of its causes does nothing toward the effort of stopping the next one. The “red flag” laws of Colorado were not properly (or at all) applied to a known criminal and someone with a record of recent violence but these measures are just the latest in a litany of gun control measures foisted by the dilettantes on the left that have no chance in staving off gun violence of the crazies. Mental health care is the ONLY thing that will do it. Taking the rights of the law abiding is NOT an option regardless of the fact that you don’t think anyone should have the means to defend themselves with a gun. If you really think this way, feel free to relocate to the Peoples Republic of Canada where self defense is not allowed - peasants don’t get to protect themselves…only the government has that right.
No one should have to be a hero, but some days we need hero’s. I don’t understand the point if this dudes quote. Just sounds like it trouble faces him he’ll cower until death.
That's right my man, DC vs. Heller in 2008 created our beloved 2nd amendment as we now know it! To be safe we should give a gun to everyone! Drunks! Emotionally unstable people! Violent offenders! They'll protect us from themselves and we can in turn protect ourselves from them... hmmmmmmm logic!
