Tim Minchin on courting controversy | One Plus One 

I'm a Black woman and a huge Tim Minchin fan. I for one am glad that he wrote "Prejudice" as I find it a perfect metaphor for why the "N" word is offensive when used by those outside of our race even though you would think it should be obvious. It's one of my favourite songs of his. It's also the best use of misdirection in a song ever. I love watching reaction videos to it immensely.

Tim says at 15.40: “Maybe that’s how we move forward, we make sure people like me don’t get second chances.” Cancel culture is not the way forward in my opinion.

I could already listen to you both separately forever but when you add honest discourse to the mix, wow! Very important questions and I think the tone was amazing... I love both of you and have seen your range of works. Tim, you are respected here, and I hope you feel that as the years go on. Stan, I love how you engage personally and don't just ask robotic questions. Beautifully done!

I am a big fan of Tim Minchin but I think Stan Grant was much to interested in his wealth than the person and was good to see Tim Minchin run rings around him with answers he really could not fathom

I grew up in an Aboriginal family. And not once did I ever hear that word. I heard all the others. I think it's a case of too much American television.

Can’t help but respect Tim’s view on where and how he fits in the world… he has and will continue to change the world within his industry, and he will be humble about it… BUT he understands the impact he has on others in the process… so smart, so relaxed, so defiant, and so fcking awesome, Tim understands his influence…. Both he and I are Perth boys and we chose different directions….. still can’t help to feel an affinity to him..

I couldn't help but feel that Stan was attacking Minchin over and over. Kudos for keeping cool, Tim. And as thoughtful and articulate as always. Stan may need some therapy. Tim tackles the hard questions daily, that's who he is. Stan's aggression was so unwarranted. The deep, interesting conversation this could have been was overshadowed by something mean spirited.

I'm not familiar with this show, but the questioning, particularly at the start of the interview, came off super aggressive.

I am always glad to get to hear Tim's opinions.

This is about reconciliation and making amends. Changing the way we think and behave. Most of us cringe thinking about the things we said and did an the past BECAUSE we didn't do anything to reverse the karma, or effects of the causes. If wrongness is done, doing right corrects the heading; doing right with intention to BE different cleans up the mess instead of leaving it for others.

Loved it - the dialogue was the best bit.

This isn't the correct interviewer because he doesn't get Tim Minchin. It's a damned shame. When I first listened to his music, I'd wished that he was my son. It didn't take long before I began to wish that he was my father. Having grown up in a humorless, abusive atmosphere, his music is surprisingly cathartic. Thank you!

Is a Japanese man who grows up comfortably in Japan an example of Asian privilege? Or does race privilege only exist in free and open multicultural western societies? Does Brown privilege, or Arab privilege, or Han Chinese privilege, or Black privilege exist in any foreign countries or cultures?

Tim Minchin is a Iegend, the world would be a worse place had he not been able to write some of the incredibly clever music that he has created.

Extremely disappointing not to have had more of an insight into the amazing talent and personality of Tim Minchin and less time spent comparing 'privileged' upbringings with other circumstances. I thought One Plus One was an opportunity to learn more about an individual rather than promoting a personal agenda.

There is no way to know what George Carlin and Robin Williams would have said about 2020 and the end Trump’s Presidency-- Tim PLEASE let the crazy white gun-toting, ,God-fearing Americans inspire you!!!! We have to be careful about going too far down the path of identity politics. It isn't working out too well in the USA. Tim Minchin feeling constantly compelled to apologise for being a white male is rather cringeworthy. Privilege comes in many different forms that are not exclusively white or male.

This is Technicolor. Shows what creatives can do with a black and white dialogue of friendly understanding. G'dongya mates.

Poor Tim, made to feel so uncomfortable - but for what? To reveal more about Tim or to assuage Stan's shoulder chips? I expected more of these two great communicators.

Great interview. Love Tim Minchin and the interviewer, besides being easy on the eye was really interesting too. Who is he? As a confirmed "leftie" for nigh on 40 years, I'm frankly bewildered by a lot of what's going on today. People *do* make mistakes (and learn from them!) but if you held some of the things people said and did in the past (especially my generation, among whom casual and even overt racism/sexism/homophobia were the norm) we'd all be "cancelled" Me, as much as anyone!

"Religion" is "rejoining". What an individual does with it is something else.

I absolutely hated this. You have someone like Tim Minchin to chat to, with all his talent, achievement and more importantly, humility and respect for others, and you spend 95% of the interview getting him to play identity politics. What a waste. He has nothing to apologize for, and because he isn’t the ignorant narcissist your questions portrayed him to be, he humbly accepted your unrecognizable characterization of him anyway. What a waste of an opportunity to have a meaningful conversation with someone who has interesting things to say. And by the way, absolutely YES, ‘The Dreaming’ is no different than other religions, which use demonstrably false narratives to subjugate others and ignore its pitiful lack of evidence. It represents, as ALL religions do, the period of ignorance of our species of biological and environmental causality, and those who perpetuate it now, do so knowingly that bereft of evidence, it can nonetheless be used to assert dominance and power over the credulous. Your religion doesn’t get a special pass, because white people acted abominably in usurping your country. I came here to see what Tim had to say, not to see how much he would apologize for his identity - his work speaks to that, if you’d only listen.

I dont think the 'Predudce ' song is all bad because it helped me as a privilaged white female uderstand more about cultrual appropiation.

Can you guys make a longer chat! Listening to Tim is a privilege we don't get a lot. Stan although I don't know much of him seems like a great person to be able to have this conversation. I do though wish Tim could be a little less judgemental of himself. Prejudice as a song IMHO is a great conversation starter even in your own head. It makes something unobtainable for many White people a little closer to a taste of actual prejudice. The start of the song gives people the welling of having the N-word conversation but then gives permission.

Identity politics attacking people for what families they happen to be born into instead of attacking the system and the people in power who still profit on wars and oppression, and the hidden colonialism of our time. And part of this is also neoliberalism making social mobility much, much harder - or even impossible - for the unprivileged. I think Tim is a great artist, btw. And also he seems to be very intelligent.

The world is the world. It’s for those who CHOOSE to make the most of it. No one is “privileged” anymore. Anyone can do anything they put their mind to. Some might have to work harder than others but that isn’t only based on Race, Gender, or Sexual preference. A straight white male might have a more difficult experience than a homosexual woman of colour. To say otherwise completely underestimates a large number of individual lived experiences. I’m not saying the history isn’t what it is or that these people don’t have individual struggles but it is history. Sure some people are still bigots, and have their opinions, However opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and some are shitty.
