I went to Las Vegas and it was very enjoyable but the heat was something else. My parents and I left the hotel to get in a cab and as soon as we got out the door it was like an oven, 107 degrees. I lived and worked in Las Vegas over 50 years. Believe it or not, many tourists find the heat "entertaining." Getting off the plane and walking into a giant blow dryer!! 107 is a balmy spring day! I miss it greatly! 90 yr young mom could no longer take the heat. I hope you did enjoy it. People that work in the Las Vegas and it's suburbs love meeting people from all over the world!! On June 4th, 2024, President Biden signed an executive order drastically tightening border. Since then, illegal crossings at the southern border have decreased dramatically.
So, here's the deal, this is a long post, because this is complex. The border has been a problem since policy changed around 9/11 and we never fixed the bureaucratic mess around it. That is the main cause of the "border crisis". It frustrates me that I don't hear great solutions from the Dems, but the GOP hasn't done much here either, and to the contrary, has stoked a lot of fear and division about the issue to a point where it makes sensible solutions hard to implement. As far as I can tell, neither wants to really fix it, they just wanna use it as a political tool. Neither party really sees this as a problem. Economically though, things aren't great, but we're also at the tail end of like... 40 years of Neoliberalism, and 15+ years of an affordability crisis in housing cause by Neoliberal policy (Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama, etc all were Neolibs). The Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS act, and the large return of manufacturing jobs with Union/ Labor support from the executive branch are the beginning of the end of that policy. We fix it with worker support, we fix it with union support, we return good paying jobs to the US, we undo the worst effects of Union Busting and NAFTA, we support higher wages to help working people catch up with the higher prices in the market. These are all plans currently in play. We have the best chance of success here we have had since the 1980s. We also need to fix the housing crisis. We get big money out of housing, we make sure new homes are being bought by people, not businesses. We enforce anti-trust laws... we have decades of problems to undo in that regard, and Lina Khan and the FTC has been working through them. We have had a LOT of wins, but stuff is not going to change overnight either. People need to remember that the US fared the pandemic crash better than almost any nation on Earth. We kept inflation out of the double digits: almost no one else can say that. I am not saying it's comfortable, or everything is peachy, but just de-regulating things and going back to a lot of the policies that got us here is definitely not going to fix our problems. Also, huge reminder, Trump didn't support workers; we lost tons of good manufacturing jobs under him. Tons. His FTC didn't do anything to stop major, harmful mergers which killed jobs. I have yet to see one, single, material policy or idea from his campaign that would do otherwise outside of some of the Tariffs on China, which Biden kept in place, and even increased. Trump doesn't have much of a plan, he just goes "look 4 years Biden bad, blah blah", whatever. Come up with a real plan to support workers, or shut up. The Dems have a plan. Inflation is down (this does not mean prices are, we would need deflation for that, and... deflation is bad if you like capitalism.) This just means we wont see price jumps. (Inflation is a necessary evil of a growth based economy). The FTC is still going after people for price gouging ( 30%+ of inflation was driven by 'excuseflation', aka, companies ripping us all off). I dunno. I will be upset if things don't get better in 4 years, but I feel like people are ignoring all the policy that got us here. From Trump, from Obama, from Bush, and even all the way back to Reagan. You're not fixing 4 decades of problems in 4 years while simultaneously coming out of a recession. But they have done a lot. Anyway, my laundry is done and I should really realize that my time on youtube comments is probably well-wasted. But eh, I tried. To say the Dems don't have effective policy sort of ignores how policy works, and where we are now vs where we could have been. Things could be way worse. We're lucky we have the chances we have right now. We do deserve better.
