+Ned Stark's severed Head The fact that they could display so many units at the same time was kinda revolutionary in 2004. Think that only 2 years earlier Warcraft 3 was released. Also it was the first Total War title to use 3D models rather than 2D sprites for the warrior models.
The same 4 mistakes get made in almost every episode. 1. An overly complex battle plan with too many elements 2. Failure to present a solid battle line 3. Underestimating the difficulty of manoeuvring mid-battle 4. Overreacting to enemy movements It's like von Clausewitz said - "War is simple, but in war the simplest things become very difficult"
They're all trying to be Napoleon (pull out grand strategic moves out of their hats that surprise the enemy) when they really should be aiming for Wellington (might not be the best tactician, but the tactics are simple enough that shit can go wrong - which it inevitably does - and be easily patched up)
they should've reserved some elites and throw all their javelins in to the macedonian pikes. use some hesitate to pin down the pikes. have spear call elephant and some reserves swing around the back. surround macedonian army. use some rear charges. rip army. at least thats how i play total war.
the few people that know anything about war always use tactics appropriate for modern warfare. the hammer and envil tactic has been successful for millenia thats what they need to realize
I'd add a fifth which to be fair wasn't much of a problem in this episode but is nevertheless a common issue: 5. Failure to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the units in both their own army and the enemy army
***** They dont have to face slinger gatling gun now in rome 1. The ai win all sieges in attila, because i cant have my men near the walls, they cant defend themself against missiles
They played it before Rome: Total War came out. It was awesome and got us so hyped. Then the cavalry stacking bug happened and all formations were utter s**tshows.
Sam Froomes haha yeah that shit was OP as fuck. Combined arms would work, but the pikemen as soon as one unit was dead could 180 turn instantly.... Iconic, and annoying, as hell.
THIS battle showcases the resiliency and combat effectiveness of veteran Roman legions. Even with the most incompetent command, command incompetent enough to have them facing the wrong way in the middle of a battle, they still have a chance to prevail.
Just found out about this show, I wish would've know about it back in the day. Great concept, well edited, great informational value, just all round interesting and engaging. Gonna watch the rest of the series!
Stopping a cavalry charge in front of archers @11:20 is the worst blunder I saw. Had they not stopped, the cavalry would've mowed them down like grass! Cavalry attacking pikeman is also suicidal but they did achieve surprise by attacking from the rear.
Craig doesn't have a clue. He can see the screens, what is his problem? He is a distraction, the other girl is just watching passively as if it she is watching telly. He has not done us guys proud.
The captains did a brilliant job, and the basic strategy; to focus on one flank and destroy it before the other forms up, was solid. They failed to support their cavalry properly, but that's a common rookie mistake. Not a bad action by the team here.
i love how in most time commander videos the comments are total war vets cringing at the people playing time commanders like remember the epsiode that sent cavalry into a fucking phalanx
I see a lot of comments about how easy it should have been, how terrible these guys were and how the commentor could have won the battle all on their own ... but thats the key thing here. As a TW player since the original Shogan I can usually hold my own or better against the computer and could, as some say, win these battle if I were on my own commanding them, but the problem these guys have is 4 people all shouting at each other with their own ideas and confusion sets in. And I swear at times the controllers deliberately screw things up for the contestants. I have witnessed them allowing cavalry to continue running away from the battle even though they can hear the general and sometimes even the captain they are with saying for them to stop and turn back.
actually, MA-KE-DONIA is the correct pronunciation not MA-CE-DONIA!!! just so you guys didn't know! so obviously the sandhurst professor's pronunciation is the correct one!!! i know this for one because i majored in ancient linguistics !
The general nearly lost the battle for them. He just seemed to shout a lot but didn't have any plan or understanding of the battle. He should just have let them do their thing.
I would have liked to see the casualty list for this battle; I honestly cannot believe that even with the one Captain sending in the elephants this team won.
+MrCrowsy nothing stays cheap in TV Land. As shows get more popular, the expectation of quality increases, which means better production values, which means bigger budgets, which means a tougher sell to a non-profit, public broadcaster like BBC.
+MrCrowsy the medication they give Richard Hammond to prevent his furious masturbation anytime someone says "Jeremy Clarkson" isn't covered by the NHS.
There's no need to criticize people for this. They are comments in response to someone who got irritated by the host's pronunciation. His pronunciation is not incorrect, so there is no need for pedantry on that.
Fun Fact: During filming of a Top Gear segment at the former RAF Elvington airbase near York on 20 September 2006, Hammond was injured in the crash of the jet-powered car he was piloting. He was in a severe coma for two weeks and afterwards suffered from post-traumatic amnesia and a five-second memory. He reported suffering loss of memory, depression and difficulties with emotional experiences, for which he was consulting a psychiatrist. Aryeh Nusbacher is now a woman called Lynette.
They have done it well too, making it two teams instead of one versus the AI. You can tell the difference between the two original seasons. Season 1 was too difficult, and they always lost, while season 2 was just like this, they messed up at every stage and still won. Having two teams go against each other makes it a better show!
+Heath Hansen If you're interested I have raised this with CA and the BBC and am currently waiting their response. If they don't I'll be doing it on my channel!
Their unit impact and individual soldier interactions in Rome 2 are awful. I haven't tried Total War Attila yet. Rome 1 while being much more low tec had more realistic interactions I'll think of how I'd do it and get back to you k? .
It's funny how they're basically remaking the original battle but worse. At least Flamininus understood the obvious and had a solid overall plan. Craig here had a good plan at first, but lost control entirely and made absolutely idiotic decisions despite his clear understanding on how to fight phlanxes. The captains basically had to steal victory from the jaws of defeat here.
The thing is, first second and third lines all cramming into one another is usually the first bit of micromanagement that goes wrong for newer players. Unless you're very careful to move up the army in formation and then give individual move and attack orders as the lines close, there's a good chance everyone is just going to mash up against the enemy front line.
28:44 ROFL! TV show host: "Guys, the last of your elephant has just been killed. Big dead elephant on the field, dont trip over it." Sarcastic: "Sure, big barbeque!"
According to a RU-vid documentary, the developers were controlling the enemy and would go hard on contestants they didn't like. And they did not like Craig.
If one person can micromanage the actions of 4 cavalry units playing the game regularly, it’s pretty amazing one guy calling the shots with 2 other people actually in control are failing to do so so spectacularly
They did revive it with Greg Wallace as presenter. Concept was different with two opposing team of human players rather than versus the computer armies. Didn't last.
Love how they the roman army just stood their and got shot by Archers and the Calverley just stopped mid charge when the Macedonian weren't in position.
Thanks for all the uploads btw Margie, I watched all of these in the past and think I'm going for a rewatch of these episodes again. A question, have you uploaded all of the episodes that exist, or just the ones you got a hold off?
This show was awsome. The only thing I dont get is the abandoned warehouse theme lol. It would make more sense to have it look like a War Room or King's Hall with a wooden table, banners and flags, armour, weapons etc. That wouldve been very cool looking!
i wish they have also a episode for a modern type warfare, let us say, until the second world war or Korea, it would be much fun to watch as well. And they should guest only military officers, they have much better knowledge in war fighting than ordinary civilians.
And one more thing, in any language system the original native tongue is always the predominant factor in determining the verbal usage of words no matter how it's viewed or pronounced by outsiders. Hope you can comprehend what i'm trying to say!
Latin was not the main language of the Western Empire, the language of writing and high education was Greek. The Empires were split to make them easier to defend, not split according to language. Since the East literally contained Greece and most Greek speaking lands it was natural, but in the West Latin was seen as a common tongue, with Greek a sign of high bearing. The rise of the Papacy in the emperor-less West brought Latin to the fore, the East/West Schism in Christianity made it final.
Of all the games I have I play Rome the most, but I usually play campaign, I haven't played a lot of multiplayer. But I can say that especially Heir knows pretty much all there is to know, just watch his vids...
That girl in the pink shirt was annoying as hell. She was doing nothing to help the others except complaining: "my cavalry is all dead and I'm getting charge by horses." she had her hastati facing the wrong way and was just letting the macedonian have it their way.
Fun episode, I must say. I don't know why the guy stays at the back of the table though and how can he not see the screen in front of him. With the person to his right who has a monitor and can view the battle, I wonder if the guy calling orders really knows what he is saying. And he totally went close up to the screen many times so I'm left confused. Anddd when he was up close to the woman, they still weren't really listening to him? Good show, though!
sad part is, if you gave this to one person who had spent any amount of time with the game or knew about ancient roman tactics would have been fine. Such as, spread the light infantry out, put the cavalry into a diamond, etc.
I'm guessing the "kuh" sound is how the Greeks/Macedonians would have pronounced it. The "suh" sound English speakers tend to use is probably a relatively new thing. I'm guessing here; not entirely sure.
bootsy it was regional dialect, ‘seh’ being for non-Hellenistic cultures, whilst ‘kuh’ is more Hellenistic and has its roots in the Greek language and culture, as certain words didn’t exist for certain cultures, I suppose it was their way of naming the Macedonians
Uhm, I don't know whether you're talking about the same people, but Prince of Macedon and Heir of Carthage are veteran Total War players, they know nearly everything there is to know. Especially Heir of Carthage would kick everyones ass...
Amazing concept for a show, and a great opportunity for some interesting viewing. Unfortunately most of 'guests' or 'players' they get on the show have absolutely no idea what the hell they're doing, to the point of it being embarrassing clusterfek! Units just sitting in places doing nothing, turning their backs to the enemy or both, with the real human players just standing there chewing their fingernails or crying that they're dying, while the Generals either yell, give stupid orders, or give decent orders that incompetent Captains can't process. Not interesting viewing at all, just frustrating to watch. What a waste of a good concept. This is officially the last one of the Time Commanders shows I'll watch. Ridiculous.
What generally, or the Allied elements? The lingua-Franca in the Roman World was Greek. So by definition, they weren't 'Barbarians.' W.R.T. what the Romans were doing fighting this war, Philip V of Macedon (rather cynically) declared war on Rome in 214BCE, (1st Macedonian War,) when it looked like Rome was finished. This (later) conflict was understandable, given the history, not to mention the pre-emptive aggression policy that the Roman Republic was, by this stage, wedded to.
the commander guys actually dumb *standing 10 feet away from the archers with cavalry* ok guys stand still and let the archers kill us ok guys now charge the archers since half our unit is dead omg their cavalry is charging our cavalry stand still dont run away stand still
I see the same thing done with the Romans on normal gameplay and this show...... The natural maneuverability of the army is thrown out in favor of crowd clashing.
@Afrikaanus Because we English speakers fuck up all the words we steal from other languages. Caesar is properly pronounced Kai-zar. Germans actually pronounce this word properly.
