Rant on! Same problem in my Explorer. My husband was an auto mechanic before he started farming full time. My explorer has had its check engine light on for a year. All emissions.
I had that same Rant in my 2018 Ram when my EGR went and then I went into limp mode at 5mph which isn’t even safe to be on the road. Absolutely the dumbest thing ever.
WE JUST HAD THIS SAME ISSUE HAPPEN ON OUR TRIP LAST WEEK!!! First dealer only replaced the sensor and looked no further. Same problem came up and the engine actually powered down while towing - max speed with any kind of incline was limited to 20-30 mph - it was AWFUL. We were stranded in a small town of 103 people and nearest dealer was 20 miles away - had to unhitch in the small town and take the truck to the dealer who was AWESOME - they replaced the sensor again AND the connector the following day when the parts arrived and that solved the problem. Lewis Ford in Fayetteville, AR is AMAZING.
Emission system problems on modern diesels is a way of life. If you are towing under 10K, go with the bigger gas engine. More $$ in gas but less $$ in maintenance. We are downsizing from a 5er to a TT as we aren't giving up our 2016 F350 6.2L gasser. We've been in our Sanibel for coming up on a year while our house was being built about 30 miles East of Cookeville. No need for a 12K 5er when a 8K TT will more than suffice going forward going back and forth to MI a couple times a year. Just wish my wife had fallen in love with a shorter TT. She saw the Transcend 315BH with the couch instead of the booth and it was all over.
We have hung on to our 2007 Dodge 2500 for the reasons you mentioned. It is pristine and pulls our trailer like it’s not even there. Of course we updated the dash and all that. I designed and cut stickers for the back window of ours and a friends 2007 Dodge. It’s the Ram logo and says, I may be old, but I’m not DEF 🤣. Says it all!
Yes the emissions systems are terrible, if you see this and ever have this issue again, disconnect both batteries for about 15 min and reconnect, it will reset the system to 65mph max twice before going lower, i found this out the hard way while traveling thru the middle of knowhere ✌️
I thought I had a great truck, 07 Chevy Duramax pre def. the last 5 years we were chasing an engine code that would put truck into limp mode when towing. We tried different repairs but it kept getting more frequent. Good diesel techs are hard to find and not one could figure this out. I went to a 3/4 ton gasser. I pull a 7000lb trailer so diesel wasn't something I had to have. Wish you the best.
We feel your pain!! We have a 2015 RAM 2500 6.4 that refuses to tow our trailer up big hills faster than 30 mph. Trailer is wayyyy under our towing capacity. We have a perpetual emissions code over the gas cap that the dealer agrees is not worth fixing however I'm convinced that this is what's causing the computer to limit our uphill towing speed. Our truck year is apparently famous for this. Spent 3 months in Lake Havasu recently when we actually had to replace the engine at 120K miles...new engine, same problem. And what, I wonder, caused our previous 6.4 to fail? I'm going to go out on a limb and say weird emissions BS causing the engine to behave unnaturally.
Sorry you guys had truck trouble the EGR has been a problem for many years in the GM line. I have a 2008 Avalanche that throws a Mass flow code when the connection on the sensor goes bad. I pull it apart and put the special lube on the connections put it back together and clear the code. Good for another couple months. I also had a 1990 K5 with a bad EGR value. I finally bought a cheap to cut it off. Never worried about it again. As for your Rant i totally agree with you. IT'S a CROCK OF S@#T.
Only trouble I've had with my duramax was a sensor in the Def system. Got all those warnings you got but nothing happened! Drove from Florida to Massachusetts with the warning screen on but nothing happened! Got the sensor replaced when we got home.
We just bought a 2024 Chevy 3500hd Gas with the 10 speed Allison. I will never buy another diesel, we tow a 43ft 5th wheel, I'm sure it'll have to work hard on the hills, but im done with these problems. I also have a 2016 Gmc diesel
Been there done that!!! Last month on our trip from Wisconsin to California my Silverado went into limp mode but also was misfiring from cylinder #4. We were in the middle of the desert as we had just left Quartzsite. Made it to a truck stop in Uma where I could mess with it. Found the connector for the injector is a common problem. Got the code to clear and stop missing. That is until we hit the mountains going into California. No amount of messing with it would help so 30MPH up the mountains were our only option. Got to San Diego and there was a Chevy dealer right next to the campground. Walked there and got a injector pigtail for $135. After installing it all was good till we got to Texas 7 days later and the same problem happened with cylinder #7. Stopped at a Chevy dealer along the interstate and bought 2 pigtails so I would have a spare. Once at our destination I installed the pigtail for #7 and all has been fine since and I still have a spare in the glovebox!
This is not meant as a mean spirited comment; but this is why when I ordered the last 2 trucks I did not get a diesel. After 2007 with all the emission issues its just not worth it. My F350 7.3l gasser doesn't even breath hard towing our 8400# tt up any of the hills & mtns. With tow/haul mode & 10 spd tranny, I rarely use the brakes going down any hills as well. IMHO anything under 13-15k #'s; gas does just fine with these newer big blocks.
I have a 19 Denali diesel that did the same thing. Dealer had it for a week and it suddenly went away. Asked what they had to do to achieve this and they just shrugged their shoulders. No codes. It just went away. I think it may have had something to do with pin connections on the ecm but at least it hasn’t come back.
Solving world problems!!!😂😂😂 Indeed, those DEF containers are a bummer and they go fast…only10,000km towing on ours (2022 Denali Diesel 1 Ton) towing 9500lbs TT…and more than 5 containers already!!! It’s gonna cost!!! But, the destination tops it all! Incredible Canada Parks and Alaska!!! (Thanks to yours adventure!!!!) Just wanted to say hi to you all. I'm pretty sure I saw you on County Road 17 in Elkhart, just north of the new Grand Design Service Center either the beginning of this week or the end of last week. Traffic was four lane, bumper to bumper so I wasn't able to turn around to say hi. Also just a side note, a train did hit a double parked pickup truck in Lagrange just a couple of days ago. Luckily no injuries.

There should be a class action suit on this limp mode stuff forced by the government.. Def does clean up the exhaust BUT it should not leave you beside the road..
I had my 2011 duramax go into limp mode because the def ran empty and the sensor didn't tell me. Once it was filled up it still had to go to a mechanic to reset the def system even though it had been refilled. Crazy crap.
I have a RAM 2500 Cummins and Ford F350 6.7 and the emissions are a huge PITA. The only thing that works to get junk improved is "IMPORTS". It took doors falling off and Honda showing up to get cars to a decent level, so will take a good import to get the trucks inline. I'm a "Ford Guy", but after dealing with emissions and dealers doing their best to screw us during the pandemic; i am seriously looking at imports.
Trucks ok just needs your def, filter changed or can clean $$ ahead to put new 1 in. Use too have one back to gas now but diesel semi old 1991 peterbuilt dabbled for work. Wife an I love Worthington videos we us to drive 48 state's now just Washington state home.
Thought of something that could relate , (want to Rv full time). I have USAA & AAA ,I’ve also used AAA. Now shopping for a Rv . I have heard of some good Rv insurance for stuff like this . egr vacuum device , same on my dodge, but instead of replacing the paper / hose i installed a flex aps hose in its place and never had a problem since, . on the dodge there is one in the rear of the engine near the top of the firewall , that one gets sprayed out , flushing out the carbon and replace the same one back, i flush it ever 25,000 miles, never bought a new one , carb cleaner spray only.
I have no problem with the emissions systems when they work correctly, as it significantly reduces pollution and improves air quality. The problem is the implementation. You should never limit a truck to below 55 mph, and there should be a way for the dealer to override that limit if parts are not available. So many people were stuck with unusable trucks because of a huge backlog for parts, and that is a complete failure by the manufacturers. I try to fill up with DEF at truck stops as much as possible to reduce the need for all the 2 gallon jugs. My other gripe is GMs lack of a DEF gauge. They just tell you when you're low.
Hi! Gang: Sorry to hear of your emission problems. But it has been that way every since the first emission law - they don't work! It is more of an income ploy by the government. My dad had a 1956 Dodge Pickup truck. He bought it used. I began driving in that truck. It had a big V8 and a two speed auto tranny. So you were not going to get real good mileage. Still my being a young driver, I consistently got 14 mpg and my dad consistently got 12 mpg. The truck used no oil between changes. And you have to know, when I pulled onto the freeway I put that big V8 to work. I accelerated up to above freeway speed before merging with the traffic. My dad always scolded me, saying it wasn't necessary. Yet I still maintained my 14 mpg. When the first California smog law was passed, it included all vehicles made after 1955. So the '56 Dodge pickup was included. We had to have a crankcase breather valve installed. Immediately my mpg dropped to 12, and my dad's dropped to 10! And the truck began using a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. Like you state, if the idea is to cut back on smog, the PCV valve was a failure. We each lost 2 miles per gallon in gas consumption and a quart of oil every 1,000. All of that gas and oil was going somewhere! It sure didn't stay in the truck. But I ended up working in the parts business at a dealership for 17 years. So I heard all of the smog system complaints. What I understood clearly was, it was the lawmakers telling the engineers what to do. Instead of dictating to the engineers, they should have said to the engineers - See what you can do to make a lot less smog emissions. And do not limit how long it will take. One of the mechanics I worked with applied for and became a member of the State Smog Emission Team. In a very short time, he became the head of California Smog Team. In that position, he moderated all smog system complaints statewide. We the people had a friend in him. He stopped a lot of the illegal stuff going on. One thing he pointed out to me, also shows some of the problem. If I designed and built my own V8, and it was smog free - it would still have to have all smog equipment required for that year installed before a State smog test. And of course installing all of that smog equipment would ruin the smog free performance of the new engine. I bought a used 1966 stock VW bug in 1969. I got 30 miles per gallon. After a few engine rebuilds, I had the engine enlarged by 200cc, and I had a 3/4 race cam installed. That little bug was a sleeper. I looked just like a plain VW. But it acted like it had a V8 in it, going up mountain highways. And my mileage managed to get bumped up to 32 mpg. Anew smog law got passed in the 1970s, and included all vehicles mad after 1965. So my '66 bug was included, if it was ever sold. I vowed I would never sell that car. But it was eventually was stolen. Alas. I remember with the first California smog law it was said, all the old smokey vehicles were the problem. Today in California it seems only the new cards need smog checks. After a certain year, the older vehicles are now exempt. Duh? So it seems, in government the main thing is for the government be obeyed and then it has to make money. We need to clone Donald Trump and put one of his clones in every branch of government. I wish you and your family the best of luck until then.
This is why I dropped a 6.7 powerstroke in favor of the 7.3L Godzilla gas 250. Stupid simple pushrod engine, normally aspirated. Not a whole lot that can go wrong with the engine. Added a 58 gallon replacement fuel tank from transfer-flow. 9MPG towing our 34ft 9000lb GVWR camper and 16-18 highway not towing. Over the last 2 years with high diesel prices, my fuel costs per mile have been *cheaper* than diesel. Exhaust brake not missed towing over the Rockies. Honestly I'm a firm believer that a diesel is overkill for a bumper pull camper under 12,000lbs GVWR. If I were pulling a large 15k-20k lb fifth wheel then yeah, I'd obviously get a dualy diesel. And oh yeah, the Godzilla nearly matches the old (normally aspirated) 7.3L powerstroke on all numbers. Don't believe me, just look it up. And yeah, going down steep grades in the Rockies the parachute effect of the camper keeps the speed around 65 which just an occasional touch of the brake, so I don't miss the exhaust brake. Down steep grades with lots of switchbacks the exhaust brake *is* nice but i'll gladly trade that for no emissions crap and an engine I can have fixed nearly anywhere.
All you need is a thin piece of biscuit tin or steel slipped in-between the egr valve witch will act a a permanent delete, then get it deleted from the engine management system, problem solved for ever
